I know you can hack TiVos to put in larger hard drives for more space - I'm thinking about getting the Sony 30 hour TiVo for $279 (after $100 rebate).

So can you upgrade the Sonys as well or only the Phillips or is it all TiVos?

Thanks guys... just too lazy to go to a TiVo forum (or even search this one).

Blake-

I would think you would be able to upgrade the Sony just like the Philips, since I believe they use the same software. Your question mught get a better response over at the TiVo forums though (since they are all experts over there )

You can hack both Sony & Phillips recorders. Just be sure to purchase a unit with 2 bays for your extra drive. Maybe this will help.

You can upgrade both Sony and Philips Tivos (they are basically the same machine with cosmetic differences). You should check out the AVS Tivo Underground forum, which has a Tivo "HackFaq" with detailed instructions and links to download the software necessary to add a second drive.

While many people are happy with their upgraded Tivos, I upgraded a 14 hr machine by adding a 60 GB Maxtor that worked fine for a few weeks then died a slow and painful death. I bought a 60 hr machine and have had no problems at all. So, in my experience, upgrading was not very reliable. Buying a 60 hr Tivo cost more than the upgrade route, but I have a warranty (which is very important with Tivos, since they seem to have lots of hardware failures of one type or another) and my Tivo works.

Good Luck.

I have to agree with AW on this.
As an owner of 2 the Tivo warranty is an important piece of the puzzle. You have to decide when you do the upgrade whether you are willing to throw away that $300+ investment if something were to go wrong. If you have the extra cash and want to attempt the upgrade go with one of the refurb. 14 or 20 hour units availble on the web for less money.

I hacked a 30 hr Sony to a 108 hour and have had no problems. If you back up the drive before using the machine (as the FAQ recommends) you will have a way to restore it in the rare case that you run into problems. The hack is easy and well worth it.
