We are moving in 3 weeks to very upscale townhouse community and I want to find something that will help to keep the bass from entering the wall that leads to the neighbors and help to push it out into my living room. While we don't blast our movies I do like to be able to hear whats going on in what we watch. I think I remember someone saying that cork board helps to deflect the sound but I'm not sure. I'm looking for a good but affordable way to not piss off the new neighbors.
TIA, by the way the sub is a 10" Cerwin

Unfortunately, bass frequencies are not easily damped out of a room by adding insulation. About the only thing that works is either: a) add mass to the wall (use a concrete block partition) or b) build up a separate structural wall. You should check with the architects / engineers for the building and see what the construction of the common wall is for the townhouses. If it's filled 8" concrete block with sheet rock over it, you're probably going to be ok. If, however, it's a stick built partition, you may have problems.
Treatments like foam and cork board will work wonders for just about every frequency except bass. So, if sound transmission (of mid and high frequency noise) is an issue as well, those measures could help you.
