Land of the (Brain-) Dead (i.e. CH)
I'm hoping this isn't true, but....
CH lists the Director's cut of Land of the Dead as fullscreen. The theatrical version (4 minutes shorter) is widescreen. So, I say to myself, "this has to be a mistake, right?.." DVDempire confirms four versions of LOTD, directors and theatrical in full and wide. Would CH really do this to us???? (rhetorical question) |
I sent them an email trying to sort out that mess myself. Never did get a reply, so I sent a second one a few moments ago. I think I might just go ahead and order it somewhere else, though.

From what i understand, the Directors Cut is ONLY available in Widescreen.
The THEATRICAL cut is ONLY available in Full-Screen. |

I was at Walmart earlier and almost all the Unrated versions they had were Full-Screen, so yeah it does come in it as well.

I ordered it a few days ago and it shipped yesterday. Selection #4268306. The pic on the site shows the unrated director's cut cover. :fc: I'll post back when it arrives...

I believe that the rated version is full screen only and the unrated is available as full screen or widescreen. So 3 different versions. What a pain!
I'll have to double check the one I bought at Wal-mart. I haven't watched it yet, but I am pretty sure I didn't get full screen. Lord I hope.... |
DVDEmpire has now removed the widescreen theatrical cut; leaving three versions:
DVDEmpire Listing This is encouraging, since it suggests that all widescreens are the director's cut. :) Or, straight from the source: Universal Home Entertainment |
I called to cancel the LOTD Unrated that I ordered. I've never cancelled with CH before, so I'm hoping this doesn't backfire on me. The CSR assured me that it was no longer on my order, but only time will tell. I did have to go in circles with the CSR when he kept telling me that a widescreen version was available.
In the meantime, I went to Wal-Mart and can verify that (as Shonn stated above) there are widescreen and full screen versions of the unrated DVD. I did a price match with a recent Fry's ad ($14.99). Not as cheap as it was with CH, but at least I got the version I wanted...now I just have to hope that my CH DVD was truly canceled. |
Zuvembieman - I know this is confusing, but I think we now have evidence that all widescreen versions are the UR director's cut and that only the full screen versions come in both. That would be consistent with supporting those rental outlets and retail chains that refuse to carry "unrated" releases, as they also tend to cater to the "fullscreen" market. Hopefully, CH will get their info straightened out. More likely, one of our friends on DVDTalk will receive CH selection number 4302501 and verify for the rest of us that it is, indeed, the unrated director's cut.

Viking99 - I guess it's all is starting to make sense now. I had ordered the fullscreen version, so I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it. I guess I should have swapped it for the widescreen version. At least now I can watch it while Halloween is still on the brain (I doubt I would have received it from CH by the end of October). Lesson learned: Don't click "add to cart" on a DVD in "search results".

Ugh! This is frustrating. I ordered LOTD unrated director's cut and asked to verify that it was widescreen only to find out once it shipped that it was full screen! So, now they're asking me to pay to return it once I get it and they'll send me the unrated widescreen one. I don't want to pay shipping when it wasn't my mistake.
And randomly, when I placed this order, somehow Madagascar is part of it! |
You can get Land of the Dead Unrated Widescreen Cut in a 2-pack with Boogeymen (the horror compilation thing) for around $20 at all the Wal-marts I've been to. Also, all the Wal-marts around here have almost only Widescreen copies of Land of the Dead which is unusual for Wal-mart. It's a great deal though cause Land of the Dead itself at Wal-mart is practically the same price without the 2-pack.

If you write return to sender on the package it doesn't cost to send it back. Just don't open the package at all.

On 10/18 I ordered Land Of The Dead, selection #4268306 (the one that has the picture of the Unrated Director's Cut cover and says that it is widescreen). Today I received my order and I got the Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut.
I'm guessing that the other version Columbia House offers, #4302501 (the one that says "Unrated Director" in the title, doesn't have a picture, and says that it is fullscreen) is the Fullscreen Unrated Director's Cut. Perhaps SilverDreams or someone else can conirm that. I'm guessing that Columbia House, like DigitalEyes and DeepDiscountDVD, just carries the two versions of the Unrated Director's Cut, and didn't even bother carrying the rated version of the DVD. |

^ To echo cloudnin's post... #4268306 is the correct selection number for the only version that matters. |
