Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

at General Dollar stores(just none that I've been to in and around Atlanta)
Just happened to go into a new one in Morrow GA, and saw a few interesting older Fox films that have been mentioned on the General Dollar thread. ($4.00 each) Grabbed Pigskin Parade(early Judy Garland, Jack Haley film) and decided to check out more stores...well, seems like the exact same titles, minus the ones I was really looking for (Moon Over Miami, etc) but still, if you are looking for...My Darling Clementine, Sinatra in The Detective, or Tony Rome,, or Crash Dive(beautiful color in this WW2 film with Tyrone Power) Seven-Ups, Fathom, 100 Rifles, Morituri, Omen, Lillian Russell, John and Mary, I Deal in Danger(With Robert Goulet of all people as a double agent in Nazi Germany) then you have another store to check out. And there seem to be tons of them, never really went into them before(well, maybe MANY years ago when they got some old RKO VHS tapes)
Funny, even the Blue Moon box sets show up there. They and General Dollar have to have separate parent companies, (He says without bothering to check) but perhaps they buy from the same distributor?

I've heard of Dollar Tree and Dollar General but haven't seen any General Dollar stores.

Will go check Dollar General for that Garland movie though. Thanks for the tip.

Heh, guess I got a bit dyslexic there, sorry! No General Dollar Stores...I finally did see a few older Fox films at one Dollar General store in Senoia GA. (Yours Mine and Ours, the original, Lillian Russell) Also meant to mention the Family Dollar stores (most of them) have quite a few $4 cd soundtracks from Varese Sarabande, recent films only.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

Thanks for the tip! There are lots of Dollar Generals here, and a number of Family Dollars, too. I made a road trip of it yesterday and came away with two Fox noir titles for $3.95 each and "John and Mary", an old Dustin Hoffman film for $4. I plan to hit up to 10 more stores over the next week, but here's what I found so far:

Marquee Musicals
Lillian Russell
My Blue Heaven
Pigskin Parade
Pin-Up Girl
That Night In Rio
The Dolly Sisters

Cinema Classics
The Chairman
Island in the Sun
John and Mary
The Quiller Memorandum
The Snows of Kilimanjaro

Studio Classics
In Old Chicago
My Darling Clementine
The River's Edge

Film Noir
The House on 92nd Street
House of Bamboo

There were a number of other Fox titles like the Sinatra films (Tony Rome, The Detective, etc.), but as I wasn't familiar with most of these, limited myself to the four collections above. Family Dollar had comparatively very little of interest, but even of the Dollar Generals, I think less than 50% of the stores I visited had anything interesting either. Even more so than usual, YMMV. What you're primarily looking for is a tall, 2-sided, spinning, black wooden rack.

I noted that Dollar General also had some Columbia/Sony titles, mostly westerns. There were also a couple William Castle films. Note #2: most of these DVD's are labeled as "previously viewed", but with intact security labels (some, probably non-Fox titles, at Family Dollar had theirs carefully cut) and factory shrink wrap. Everything I bought was 100% new and included the inserts.

Anybody else care to report their finds?

Addendum: I also found the odd title at Weis Markets (a regional supermarket chain) for $2.50.

I found the Fox DVD's at a couple of Family Dollar stores, but they are all previously viewed. No new DVD's at all in these stores.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

Dunno. I believe my three disks included "Previously Viewed" stickers, but the security labels and shrink wrap suggested otherwise. (I did take a chance with "John and Mary", as it came in a cardboard slipcase that was wrapped differently and with no exposed security strip. I figured, "how many rental companies could be interested in a film like this, and how many are likely to save the very new-looking cardboard sleeve?") I'm off to 5 more Dollar Generals in about 2 hours, to get this out of my system!

In a situation like these, "Previously Viewed" means they include a lot of returns, some of which may have been used, so rather than make an effort to separate them, they label them all as previously viewed. It's mostly stuff that sat in some warehouse or sat in some retailer's storage area or on its shelves for a while and then got returned.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

I enjoy a good road trip, but FYI, for the most part the trip was a bust. I did find an original, brand new, 2002 release of "The Producers" (MGM) at a Family Dollar for $4. I typically try to avoid double-sided disks, but this is apparently the only release with the original trailer, so I consider it the better version.

This is the best DVD out on this classic. The movie actually has the original "BABES IN TOYLAND" titles on it, although the case says "March of the Wooden Soldiers", and the material is from the restoration from the original 35mm elements.

Thanks for the heads up. I knew there was a Legend Films release as well, but was not aware of the differences. I may take another try at a few more stores, because I would love to stumble on some Fox Classics as well.

I hit a few more stores, but no Fox titles around here. I did see a few more MGM titles for $4. The Birdman of Alcatraz, Casino Royal 1967 Collector's Edition and a few random MGM western titles.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

Glad some people are finding the fox films...find them at some stores, others just have the more expensive, less interesting, (IMO) films...some stores have them all in one location, one store had dvds in 3 different spots, so you might as well ask them if they have more dvds somewheres else...
saw two more titles I hadn't seen elsewhere, at a store in Hampton GA...
As mentioned previously, these are clearly factory sealed with a previously viewed sticker slapped on(and likely kills some sales as people will just see the sticker as they walk by, and not bother to see they are still "new"

Never even heard of Man in the Middle, have heard of Murder Inc before

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

I found these today at Family Dollar. They had some other good ones too, like 7th Voyage of Sinbad and a few others that I already own.

This is what I bought:

$5
50/50
Youth in Revolt

$3
13 Ghosts
Jane Austin Book Club
Urban Legend
Married Life
Vampire Effect (Jackie Chan has a cameo in it but he's plastered all over the box)
Charm School
Spring Breakdown

FYI, many of the $3 titles listed above have been found in Fred's stores recently for $1.99. You might want to check there first, then hit Family Dollar for the titles that weren't at Fred's.

I never heard of that place, not a single one of them in my state.

Nice selection of $4 DVDs at the local "Family Dollar" today- all from MGM's "Midnight Movies" collection...

* The Beast Within/ The Bat People
* Yongary/ Konga
* The House on Skull Mountain/ The Mephisto Waltz
* Chosen Survivors/ The Earth Dies Screaming
* Devils of Darkness/ Witchcraft
* Gorilla at Large/ Mystery on Monster Island (one of my all-time favorite "bad movie" double features!)

Anybody else seen any of these, especially Food of the Gods?

Maybe. I've visited two FD's so far. One had under a half dozen Midnight Movie titles among an impressively untouched selection of other DVD's. The other had a new selection of unimpressive animation titles. From JBeeching's list, I already own all the stuff I want, or the titles don't interest me, but was curious if there might be other DVD's not on the list. PM me an I can recheck, probably after work on Tuesday.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

I picked up Food for Gods a few weeks ago there.

I went back today and found Witchfinder General and the Tingler. They had most of the double-pack Midnight movies, and even some more.

Re: Family Dollar has a lot of the Fox films that have shown up...

Two more to add to the original list, in addition to Witchfinder General:

The Return of Dracula/The Vampire
The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues/The Beast With 1,000,000 Eyes

Some of the DVD's from Berigan's original post were appearing at Family Dollar and Dollar General stores. I wonder if there's been any spillover this time?

I got these 2 at FoxConnect for 2.99 during one of the 50% sales during BF. Many of these except Food of the Gods are available at FoxConnect and during their 50% sales. the prices range from 2.99-4.99.

To add to this, the easiest way to find them on the FoxConnect site (aside from searching by name) is to search "double feature."
