Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
Awesome! I've been waiting for a great price on this one and it's probably as cheap as we're going to see for a good while.
Thanks OP! |
Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
Thanks, in for two! Great Christmas gift. I almost bought it at B&N for $42, but this is better...

Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
Is this worth it if I already have the 21-disc UK set?
|
Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
Thanks, I've also been waiting for a deal on this. I'll put it on the shelf next to my unopened Abbott & Costello set I got last year around this time!

This price *almost* makes me wish I'd not purchased it from amazon on release day... |
Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
I have the opposite question...if I own this set is it also worth owning the UK set?

From the *many* reports I've read you should open it during the return/exchange window. While mine was OK I've read of quite a few people having issues with the glue from the "pages" getting on disks and disks being almost glued to the pages enough to cause either page or disk damage when the disk is removed. The packaging totally sucks, but this price makes it easy to forgive. The quality of the shorts is very good.
Anyway this is an excellent price for the set. I wish I'd waited another couple of weeks before ordering it (from B&N at 59.99 minus 15% coupon). |

I can't believe it's this low this quick. I thought I did good getting it for 55 and tax from BN last month.

According to the top review on Amazon this set has a few more things and has restored prints but lacks all of their silent shorts (thus bringing the set down in size by more than half). Assuming the price is about the same I'm leaning to the UK set since it appears to have more content overall and the prints, although not restored, are fine. This set differs from the European 21-disc set in that the silent films and the colorized TV editions have been omitted, which cuts the disc space down to a manageable and economical 10 discs. The total running time averages out to a little over three hours per disc, perhaps not the ideal compression rate but about par for the "double-feature" DVDs on the market today. The set also includes some two hours of bonus features, of special interest to Laurel & Hardy admirers. THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE is gorgeous, in excellent color, and appears to be a first-generation video copy from the U. S. Government source (except for the main title, the source print appears to be uncirculated). The team makes cameo appearances in ON THE LOOSE, ON THE WRONG TREK, and WILD POSES, and all three shorts are included in their entirety. http://www.amazon.com/review/R280JTF...wasThisHelpful |
Re: Laurel Hardy Essential collection 35.99 jr.com
Wow, no silent shorts? That's a HUGE omission for me as some of my favorites are from their silent period. Looks like the UK set will suffice as long as the prints are generally good. I don't need these to be pristine and would gladly sacrifice relative PQ for historical completion. Any good deals for the UK set?

Personally, I own both sets, and am very happy. I was hoping for a BD release, seeing as they were remastered in High Definition, but for this price, I'm willing to double-dip later. L&H films are must owns for my collection. |

The UK set was dirt cheap for the longest time, but I haven't seen any super deals on it recently. It may happen again though...

Did anyone notice the listing was removed from Amazon? The set didn't go out of print or recalled or something, did it?
