This program needs the BD treatment

Good deal, I wish the complete was on sale too though.

Good deal, but I'm glad I got mine before they switched it over to these newer (really thin) thinpaks. They might be a space saver but I like the original thinpaks (and Collector's Editions) better.

That's a good price for getting into the series, The X-Files is a worthy addition to anyone's collection. -kd5-

I remember being excited when they were $99 American on sale. Friggin hundred dollars for a season on DVD, yeesh.

I wish that I knew what I know now. When I was younger. I would have killed Hitler, gotten a ham sandwich, had sex with Mary Todd Lincoln and waited to buy the X-Files on dvd.

And some of thought that was a good price because we'd paid $20 per episode for Star Trek on VHS.

I'm still waiting for less than $10 a season to buy back this show (I saw the downward trend of DVD values a number of years ago and began liquidating my collection on Amazon)...although these current transfers are nearly ten years old so I might not even bite at $10 a season. --Peter

I never bought Trek on VHS--I only bought the $20 two-episode DVDs. I feel like a youngster!

As davidh777 said...
I remember paying something close to $100~150 a season when these first came out.

It's still a shame they took out the bonus disks as hearing Chris Carter saying "um" a zillion times in those great season documentaries is really something special.

I think this show falls into the same category as Star Trek: TNG.

Meaning the VFX were done at SD resolutions, so in order to create a High Definition master they'd have to re-do ALL of the VFX.

Which is not likely unfortunately. :(

They would also have to find the old 32mm stock footage and re-edit the entire show from scratch since all the post was done on tape. They did this on DS9 and Voyager as well. In regards to TNG, I bet X-files at least has the original film stock.

I'm sure it's just a typo but TNG, DS9, and Voyager were all shot in Panavision 35mm.

It was the same for The X-Files. Shot on film, edited on video.

It's just a shame that a lot of VFX heavy shows of a certain vintage will probably never see the light of day in higher resolutions. :(

Ditto. For that reason, I'm glad I have my original sets, even though I paid a ton for some of them. However, 3-4 sets I got for $16 each during Suncoast's price mistake in June 2003 (I remember the date only because it happened when I started a new job, and I was placing orders during the training class). I remember you could order ANYTHING in their 2 for $32 sale. I bought a lot of shit. X-Files and Farscape seasons, plus more...

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is not a fan of the really thin (keep case size) sets. My preference is the 2D slim discs in slip case.

I believe the complete series has all the bonus material included in the original CE's. Anyone verify?

Wasn't it shot in 16mm for the first few seasons?

According to IMDb The X-Files was shot in 35mm throughout the entire run of the series, with the exception of the 'X-Cops' episode.

I'm guessing they went to 35mm 3-perf beginning with Season 5.

I stumbled across a S1/S2 2-pack at Sams a couple of months back for ~$19 with tax and have been looking for the others since. These are in the new single keep case packaging. This price per season might just be close enough.

Unlike some of you I *like* the new keep-case size repackaging of these and other former digipak and slim pak set packaging. These take up less space on the shelf. If I could find a supplier of these I'd replace lots of digipaks with them.

With me, the packaging is part of the appeal of owning the older slimsets and Collector's Editions. I wish I had the Collector's Editions of all the seasons instead of just 4, 5, & 7, complete with booklets and bonus discs. I realize that they take up more space, and for larger collections, space is a rare commodity. My collection is not nearly as huge as some here and I like owning Collector's Editions when it's possible (and affordable). -kd5-

Back in July 2010 I saw the entire X-Files Ultimate Collection for $77.32 at Sam's Club on clearance (with an all sales final sticker). I passed on it because I always thought the transfers were grainy and it really needs a remastering onto Blu-Ray. When the entire Blu-Ray series is out and comes down in price, then I'll get the X-Files. Until then I wouldn't touch them even at $5 per season. It's nothing against the series (though I despised some episodes) but simply the video quality. When I watched them long ago, I wanted to call the dark scenes (which is most of the time) the "Grainy Files".

Manzana, see the other posts in this topic for the reason why The X-Files won't have a Blu-ray release anytime soon.

I'll gladly take the current DVD release, even in the slimmer cases without some bonus features, over no release at all, especially when the season sets can be purchased this week for less than one-tenth the original, early 2000s list price!

Quick note though most probably already know this. If you don't order them all (I ordered 2,3,4)...the rest will start showing up in your goldbox for $12.82. My wife said she didn't need anymore right now, but if you want to save about 60 cents on some of them, that should work. It is random though, today I had season 5 and 9 in there.

I missed that stuff about shot on film, edited/FX done on video, and I didn't understand that meant there was no way they could make a Blu-Ray release out of it. I'm assuming it means the only existing "masters" of the completed X-Files episodes are 720x480 video tapes? I also assume all of the effects work is just "thrown away" and isn't saved anywhere to be re-applied to HD transfers if they ever retransfered from film? I have no idea how "VFX" are created, applied, or transferred, but it's a shame to think all the work is just thrown away. My understanding is real film stock (not digital captures) is a lot higher resolution than 1920x1080 and is a good HD source if the film is in good shape.

Just because they were edited on video doesn't explain the graininess of the DVDs to me, but I do understand it would be hard to make HD quality material out of 720x480. Had I known this important info, I might have bought that Sam's Club complete ultimate edition set (the slim packs with the bonus DVDs included) last year for what works out to $8.59 per season. Sadly I don't have time to pre-research everything I might ever encounter in a store to know if a BD release is likely. I'm also too stubborn (and too backlogged with other stuff to watch) to pay the $13.49 price per season. However, I'll now adjust my expectations that the X-Files on Blu-Ray is going to be MANY years away. I find it hard to believe that they (Fox) won't do a HD transfer at some point, but maybe there aren't enough X-Files fans to ever justify it. I don't know.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

Well, they could theoretically make new HD Masters.

But that would involve using the original live action 35mm footage that was shot and scanning it to presumably create a DI, from which they could create all new VFX and edit each episode.

In essence they would be creating a whole new show. The number of man hours and cost to do this would be astronomical for a series which ran as long as The X-Files did (I think over 200 episodes).

Which is why, as I said earlier the chances of this happening are slim to none. You can't blame Fox for not choosing this route, it really is not cost effective.
