Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

It's been a while, but Blockbuster is supposed to running their sale again on used DVDs and Blu-rays. The sale was supposed to start Tuesday as a secret sale advertised on Dish Network, and then they are supposed to put up signs for sale beginning this weekend. The secret sale could be offered to in-store customers but no signs could be put up.

Some sample titles I picked up:

127 Hours
Buried
Due Date
Easy A
Machete
A Single Man
Winter's Bone
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

Good hunting!

I'm assuming those titles you got were DVD and not Blu ray??

Their sale is supposed to be running on Blu-rays as well - I didn't check the Blu-ray table, thought there were quite a few choices there. Sorry.

Blu-ray thread here.

Went by the only BB within 20 miles of the house and picked up the following:

Girl Who Played with Fire BR
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo DVD
Hurt Locker BR
Zombieland BR
Get Smart BR (hey, I needed a fifth!)

I knew about the $5 for $20 on the $9.99 blu's. I was just verifying if the 3 for $20 was ringing up on the $12.99 and above blus

I just got back from Blockbuster and the sale is from 5/20 - 6/6. 5 for $20 is for DVDs and BRs $9.99 or less. 3 for $20 is for only DVDs $14.99 or less no BRs.

is that what you were told or is that what's ringing up in the register?? cuz many times those are 2 separate things

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

The sales was 5 for $25 at my store. The manager told me the 5 for $20 offer was only for those that got in on the secret sale earlier this week. I have to call bullshit here. Despite the in-store signs, I believe their Facebook page states the 5 for $20 sale is running through June 6th.

Can I contact corporate to complain (if this really is a chain-wide sale) or is it really a YMMV situation?

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

I just bought DVDs from them and that's what the store and register states and rings up. Plus they have a flyer that they hand out when you checkout that indicates what the prices are and the start and end of the sale.

yeah, your manager was basically just trying to pad his sales by adding in the $5 for soda and candy (which they REALLY are trying to push) into the deal... basically forcing you to buy it. if you had just bought 5 movies they would have rang up for $20

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

He wouldn't sell me the movies without the snacks. There was signage all over the store touting the candy and soda as a "bonus" with the 5 for $25 deal. The signs looked professional, not something he just whipped up himself. But if this is true, then he's a major douchebag!

He's wrong. I've purchased at 3 different BBs during this sale and all 3 asked me if I wanted to take advantage of the soda/candy/popcorn offer for an additional $5. I said "No" and paid my $20 plus tax.

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

The Hurt Locker
Slumdog Millionaire
Red Cliff (Part 1 and 2)
Paranormal Activity
500 Days of Summer
Star Trek
The Road
The Last House on the Left

$4 each for the BD version - not a scratch on any of the disc. Either they are excess inventory or they have been subject to that scratch removal machine. Happy

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Does anyone know how to go about e-mailing corporate? It seems the contact section on Blockbuster.com only pertains to online rentals and website feedback.

I was in Blockbuster for the BluRay sale but looked through the displays they had set up that had the 3 for $20 dvds in them ... some pretty good titles I noticed (How to Train Your Dragon, Inception, and The Town to name a few)

Picked up as part of the 5 for $20 promotion:

A Prophet
Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead
Zack and Miri make a Porno
Donnie Brasco
District 13 Ultimatum

They're putting out more stuff, there was a second table I saw today with BD's and the girl at the register said they will some more stuff out tomm although she said many would be more of the same. B/W this and Big Lots' new stock, am going bankrupt.

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

Picked up the following part of the 5 for $20 promotion. Since we only have one Blu-ray player I decided to stay exclusive to DVD for the time-being but couldn't pass up Marley & Me for $4 (especially when they still had the DVD version on the $14.99 table).

Marley & Me (2008) - Blu-ray Disc
Old Dogs (2009) DVD
Love Finds a Home (2009)
G-Force (2009)
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)

All discs especially the Disney titles were in pristine condition. I wanted to pick up more but since I don't get paid until next week I had limited funds. Fortunately the sale doesn't expire until June 6th :)

I've been mostly buying BDs from this sale, but I might have to check my local store for DVDs (possibly) tomorrow.

I made a short stop earlier today and saw the Shout Factory Piranha DVD for $9.99. I already have it, but it makes me wonder what other good stuff is marked down to $9.99 that qualifies for this sale.

Picked up the aforementioned Piranha.

Also:

Primer
Big Fan
Tokyo!
Persepolis (Blu)

Thanks. I sent an e-mail and got this response over the weekend:

Our employees are not trained to treat our customers in the manner you reported, and in no way does this reflect how we conduct business in our stores. Rest assured that this will be forwarded for corrective actions.
So they basically confirmed that this manager was wrong in not honoring an advertised sale. Still, I have little doubt these "combo deals" came at the suggestion of corporate. If this manager had simply given me the option of declining the candy and soda add-on, I wouldn't have reported him at all. But telling me the 5 for $20 deal had ended on the 19th was an outright lie and he knew it.

Blockbuster also requested my contact information, so maybe they'll give me a free rental or something?

Hot Tub Time Machine
The Crazies
Leap Year (.99)

most of the ones I wanted (Buried, Zombieland, ninja assassin, etc.) were not there. For the first time I actually saw a LARGER pile of blu-ray for $5/20 than DVDs!

I really need to get a BR player...getting a $4 SD DVD when I could get a $4 BR just seems strange.

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

Pretty sizeable .99 pre-viewed DVD sale going on today only at my local store. Hopefully this is chainwide. I'd normally start a new thread, but I'm probably posting this too late in the day for the info to be useful. Lots of good stuff that I already owned or had just picked up on blu-ray for $4 at the same store. Here are some of the titles I remember:

Away We Go
Dark Water (Remake)
Franklyn
The Informant! (Rental Version)
Leap Year
Letters to Juliet
The Men Who Stare at Goats
A Nightmare on Elm Street (Remake - Rental Version)
Nothing Like the Holidays
Observe and Report
Paranormal Activity
Splice (Rental Version)
Synecdoche, New York
Youth in Revolt
Zombieland

There were plenty of other random titles I can't recall off the top of my head. I showed restraint though - I passed on several that I figured I'd rather own on blu or could eventually buy for 0.89 from one of the GoHastings free shipping promos. The only DVD I purchased was Triangle with Melissa George, which was the only copy in the sale bin.

Thanks for this note. A SoCal store near me was running a clearance sale on selected PV Bluray Discs as well for $0.99 a piece...some of the titles were those that I had picked up earlier as part of the 5 for $20 sale - felt a trite bummed. These titles didn't have pricing stickers on them - apparently they were excess inventory or something of that kind. Picked up the following for a total of $9.69:

Grey's Anatomy - Season 4 discs 1 and 2
The Messenger
The Merry Gentleman
Triage
The Greatest
Twilight - the New Moon
The Ghost Writer
Give 'em Hell Malone

Not the best of titles - there were many more but I have had my fill of great titles as part of the main course - these were just dessert bites :-)

Made out with some good $0.99 deals

Rome: Season One (Complete)
Adam
Taking Woodstock
Year One
The Wicker Man
Son of Rambow
Burn After Reading
A Serious Man
Tetro
Talk to Her

Also grabbed a few Blu-Rays (those were pretty picked over by the time I got in, though).

They still have the $0.99 DVD bin at my local store. It looked barely touched since I was in there yesterday. The "Memorial Day Sale - TODAY ONLY!" sign had been changed to "TODAY ONLY! 5/31" Stupid manager with his deceptive signs...

why blame the Manager ? He's only doing what Blockbuster is telling him to do :-(....they do that, so that people feel a desperation the first time around and grab as many. Just a business tactic. Its no better than Macy's One Day sale that happens EVERY Wednesday

it's on until the .99 cent movies are gone.. that's what I heard tonight.

It was REAL slim pickens, though.. There is a reason most of these are .99 cents!

They had over 200+ titles on sale. I could barely find 5 worth getting...

Not necessarily. This was the same manager who told me the 5 for $20 deal was ONLY for Facebook members who came in before May 17th. I was told the deal was now 5 for $25 and included "free candy and soda". People speculated the manager was just trying to pad his refreshment sales by tacking candy onto the deal. I was never given the option of decling the $5 worth of snacks.

His sign was promptly taken down the next week and replaced with the correct 5 for $20 deal. This was after I contacted corporate about this store not participating in a valid advertised promotion. Hence, my comments on his signs (and info) being decepitve. I just don't appreciate someone knowingly feeding me a line of BS -- whether it's mandated by the company or not.

There's one particular store in a high traffic area I sometimes visit and they often have different pricing during clearance sales. More than once I went there during what was a 5 for $20 sale at other stores only to find their only deal was 5 for $25 with the snacks. That didn't happen this time because it was advertised on Facebook as a national promotion.

Re: Blockbuster DVD sale - 5 for $20 / 3 for $20

I stumbled into a Blockbuster today that still had two bins full of 99 cents titles. I picked up the first season of Hung for $2.10 out the door. I do have a story though.

There were five copies (10 discs) of Hung spread out amongst the two bins. I picked them all up and took them to the register and asked the guy if I could check the discs and pick out the ones that were in the best shape. Note that there wasn't anyone else in the store, just me and the employee. This is how the conversation went:

Me: This is going to sound crazy but could you open these for me and let me check the discs and decide between the two best looking ones?
Employee: Well, I could but you know we have a pre-played guarantee right? (He goes on to explain to me the guarantee.)
Me: But what if I come back to exchange one of the discs and you guys are all out?
Employee: *laughs* That won't happen because these have been here since the sale started.
Me: *trying to be polite* I guess you're right. I may just be too anal for my own good.
Employee: *sarcastically* Yes, you really are.

Then he rang me up and I left. I don't know why it made me so mad. I guess because it would have taken him all of two seconds to let me check the discs. The sarcastic tone and the snide remark didn't help any either. It's not like there were any other customers in the store that he had to attend to. When I walked in, he was standing there doing nothing, watching the movie previews that they show on the two televisions in the store.

Ugh...I fucking hate Blockbuster.
