If it helps anyone. One can still buy a BD player and BD movies even if they don't have an HDTV yet. They play the same as a DVD on a non-HDTV but at least one can start buying BD titles and not buy the DVD now and again later on BD when/if they purchase an HDTV.

At least a portion of the time the BD will contain better extras and potentially a transfer that would surpass the one used for the DVD even on the non-HDTV.

I bought the Best Buy exclusive Blu-Ray of Almost Famous Director's Cut a few weeks back & I still don't have a Blu-Ray player!

One of the things I'm holding out for is reviews of the sound quality on the Oppo BDP-95 from Stereiphile & Absolute Sound.

Tell your 8 year old: According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake, the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

It's all about royalties. And you *do* do it in school if you're using it in reference to the Blu-Ray disk format. Otherwise your English Teacher will give you a big red mark if they are doing their job properly.

I didn't know that. I have the Legend version ($3 from BL of course!) and it's done *very* well.

I went in today to see if the new $5 grouping was out... it wasn't but there was a new selection of "previously viewed" titles at $3. The only standout I saw was "Watchmen". I *might* have picked this up if I did not already own a copy. At least they are pricing the PV titles a bit more reasonably - although considering they sell new titles at $3 the PV ones should be more in the $1-$2 range.

The next question: Is it disc or disk?

I haven't seen anything new at Big Lots...

I just took a look on amazon; it appears the differences are:
1. The Kino while indeed done by Legend is supposed to be 7 minutes longer.
2. 2 disc vs 1 disc (higher bit rate)
3. More extras on the Kino

This is correct, though I hadn't heard about the KINO version being longer. That would be a deal breaker, but seeing as how LEGEND did both, I have to wonder how accurate that criticism is. ???

I will say, if such things matter to you, that the KINO edition has better packaging in using the original, gorgeous ad art on the cover. But for the price, if it's complete, the Legend version is well worth it if you just want to see the movie and don't need the higher bit rate or the extras. It's a very good transfer.

Plus I would not be surprised if KINO didn't do this title in Blu soon enough.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

I have copies of both, though I'd never opened the Legend before. Times are as follows:

Legend both color & b&w are 94 minutes 21 seconds

Kino b&w 102 minutes 10 seconds
Kino Color 103 minutes 21 seconds

Kino also mentions on their web site that their edition has restored, lost footage. I kinda suspect it's the same restoration with the additional footage only on the Kino. What I don't get short of doing a frame by frame is why the Kino color is a minute longer than the Kino b&w. It MAY be that my player is adding the FBI crap to the time of the color but not the b&w?

As an aside, I HATE those F'ing plastic security strips at the top, while opening the Legend removing the strip put a crack in the case 3/4 of the way across which also slightly tore the cover art.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

I swung by the two Lexington, KY stores yesterday. The one in Hamburg Pavilion was so overstocked that DVDs were crammed sideways into every nook and cranny of the displays. It was really tedious having to pull out a dozen titles wedged on top just get a look at what was under them. Sadly, it was mostly the same old crap with a bunch of the Previously Viewed titles thrown in. No sign of the $3 shipment from last month with all the OOP Paramount titles.

The other location had a much better selection. Still no $3 OOP titles, but they finally put out some of the Comedy Central/MTV 2 sets for $3. Was happy to find one copy of Sarah Silverman S2, V2, but it was from the $5 shipment (at least it didn't have floaters). Still hoping to find the Drawn Together sets.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

Some $5 boxes showing up at Sherman Way & Topanga Canyon in CA w/multiple copies of the following:

Marlon Brando - Franchise Collection (4-movie digipack)
Gary Cooper - Franchise Collection (5-movie digipack)
Blade - The Complete Series
Conviction - The Complete Series (from Dick Wolf)
The Big Red One (2-disc SE)
Deliverance (snapper)
Bruno

There were others but that's all I remember. Most were single films but a few romantic collections. About 7 or 8 boxes stacked on metal shelves. Easy to pull out and look through.

That is about the best selection at a single Big Lots that I have seen for some time.

I don't think that most of the better oop Paramounts ever made it to Lexington.
