It's a pet peeve but the coupons specify the item must be $20+ BEFORE sale so all items should be eligible by that print regardless of final price (including lower trier Criterions).
I do understand the overall nature of the $5 coupon use is shadowy and likely not kosher, but when clerks try the above it's annoying. It might be legitimate for them to cite multiple use or new members only clauses.

When you're banking on the clerk not knowing or caring about the coupon terms in the first place, I think it's reasonable to expect that they may deny it even if they don't know the "correct" reason for it.

Indeed. A clerk is far more likely to get in trouble for accepting multiples of the same coupon, as opposed to just telling the customer "No." He's not going to risk getting a slap on the wrist just for some crazy customer who wants all those weird foreign movies that no one else buys throughout the year.

Re: November Criterion Sale
This is my first time going the in-store route with these sales.
I went in with five coupons and the clerk said I would only be able to use one. He said I would not be able to use any of the other four in the future and offered to throw them away for me.
If I can only use one, fine, but he didn't even make that easy. He stood there reading the whole coupon and then tried to claim it was expired, even though it says in bold print "expires November 28, 2010."
I got Brakhage 1 & 2 set for $31, though, so I can't complain.

Clerks refusing multiple coupons are more 'n likely just being good corporate Eichmanns.

That's just the shipping charges and GST to Canada. B&N's email invoicing isn't showing the price on orders, but if you log in to your BN.com account, it shows all the proper prices.

So it's ok for them to accept it illegitimately but not to deny it illegitimately?

Re: November Criterion Sale
true, but in my case, the clerk said the coupons were "bogus", further making me look like a crook with some photoshopped coupons trying to make a steal. he could've pulled his head out of his ass and came up with a better excuse, or maybe even just something to the extent of "sorry, it just doesn't comply with our system" (even funnier, is the fact that three Criterions i brought up wouldn't even ring up in the system, and made the same "deny" sound that my coupons made, lol).
I hate the Arboritum store in Austin, TX... their intolerance of any coupons is without parallel.

Awesome. Already picked up Darjeeling Limited with the Borders 50% off coupon awhile back, but was able to use this deal along the library link and a $50 gift card I had to spend $33 and get Charade, Modern Times, Paths of Glory and Seven Samurai.

Re: November Criterion Sale
Couldn't help myself.
Had to get a few more
House
Antichrist
The night of the hunter
The seventh seal
A bout de souffle
The thin red line
Merry christmas, Mr. Lawrence
In the realm of the senses
Hunger
M
Brazil
Black Orpheus
The last emperor
Black narcissus
Revanche
Charade
The magician
Paths of glory
Seven samurai
Newly added:
Yojimbo & Sanjuro
Kagemusha
The Wages of Fear
For All Mankind
Now I'm done !
I'm not so ashamed because as I read Criterions have a high resale value so if there's a title I don't like I can pretty much get my money back and a little more.

I placed my first order last night and it will be here in the morning, I love living so close to a BN warehouse. I'm buying all blu's except for a replacement copy of Le Samourai (mine skips throughout) and a standard DVD of Ace in the Hole, for some reason I don't own.

Re: November Criterion Sale
They had a zillion Paths of Glory and House discs at my local B&N. They still won't take multiple $5 coupons. Also, the clerk would not let me use the regular $5 coupon with a "$5 off $50" coupon in the same transaction, while she had let me use them together during the last sale. She insisted they had to be used in separate transactions (the fine print says otherwise) so I'm guessing some coupon "re-education" has been handed down at my local store. No matter, still a great deal.

Re: November Criterion Sale
Tested the coupon in multiple NYC locations and had more trouble than expected... but I was trying to buy $29.99 MSRP titles. If I was rejected then I made my way elsewhere. At one store during the last sale a clerk told me that they can get in trouble if they are found to be accepting coups that shouldn't qualify under the printed restrictions. On Monday a clerk told me that they had been told they were accepting too many multiple coups during the previous sales and so he would only permit me to use one.
It would appear to be easier if I was buying the $39.99 titles as one clerk let me do after turning down a $29.99 list.
House
Paths Of Glory
The Virgin Spring ($39.99 list, $13 + tax)
Black Orpheus

Re: November Criterion Sale
I have a question:
The $5 off coupons say that I have to have a membership before 10/28 to use them in the fine print. If I signed up for the 2 free month trial now, does that mean I can't use the $5 coupons in-store? Does the computer flag it or something?

Re: November Criterion Sale
I went back and used two $5 different coupons, and even though the clerk seemed to agree that the $20 minimum was for the pre-discount price, the checkout system did not want to accept the coupon. As soon as he put my membership into the system, it dropped the price for each Blu-ray to $18 and then rejected the coupon, and he had to call a manager. Well worth the hassle to get two more for $13 each, of course.

Re: November Criterion Sale
I was getting ready to buy a ton of Criterions and then a little voice started telling me how many were available for instant streaming on Netflix.
I used to never want Netflix and only wanted to buy movies because I didn't realize how good the Netflix selection was.
Now I really can't justify spending so much money on Criterions...or for that matter, any movies.
Bummer...and now I sound like a Netflix ad.
