Same situation for me on three different titles - perhaps it is a bug?
EDIT: It is definitely a bug. I just checked on The Thin Red Line Blu-ray and received the same OOS message, which is impossible as I saw a dozen copies there not 30 minutes ago.

It's a pet peeve but the coupons specify the item must be $20+ BEFORE sale so all items should be eligible by that print regardless of final price (including lower trier Criterions).

I do understand the overall nature of the $5 coupon use is shadowy and likely not kosher, but when clerks try the above it's annoying. It might be legitimate for them to cite multiple use or new members only clauses.

Re: November Criterion Sale

My apologies if this has been asked and answered but can you use a coupon on a pre-order in-store?

It's a mistake. Others have posted the same thing earlier. They charge you the correct amount regardless of the receipt.

That is a big ymmv situation depending on the store or employee. Technically no though if you read the fine print on the store coupons since it clearly states it excludes products available for pre-order.

Thanks. I missed that in the fine print. I hope the sale is still going through the 16th so I can get Night of the Hunter.

No It's not really their fault.
I did a quick shipping with USPS test for shipping about 10 blu-rays (I gave 3lbs as estimate). From Phoenix to Nebraska it's only 9$ for Priority Mail, that's a 2 days delivery.

While shipping 3lbs from US to CANADA...
Priority Mail , 33$ (6-10 days)
First Class mail, the cheapest. 24$ (no estimate)

I'm sure they have some discount maybe but it's still cost them way more to ship to a canadian customer.

Even after that, it's still a deal to buy all those movies at 50% off

The sale is supposed to run through November 21. Since Night of the Hunter is already discounted for the sale online it should still be running on November 16 at stores. Just hope your local store gets some copies, or order one for store pickup on the release date. Unfortunately November 23 releases are not discounted since they just miss out falling under the end date of the sale.

Re: November Criterion Sale

Totally.

Also, my options were:
Free shipping PLUS 8.5% tax to ship to Texas. OR
Paid shipping PLUS 5% tax to Alberta.

With either option, I risk getting dinged by customs, too. Had I shipped to TX and brought them home with me (I'm going to TX on the 12th for a week), I could get dinged if I was randomly searched. Having B&N ship them to Canada, that risk is still there, but less likely if the order gets split up into multiples when they finally ship, which is entirely possible.

Oh, the perils of being a Canadian.

If you read the fine print on the coupons they clearly state they are not valid with products available for pre-order. Sure you might get a store to accept one but it's a huge ymmv situation. There is no guarantee it will absolutely work everywhere.

If you were charge for customs charges, you already paid GST so that one's out. There's a possible 5$ handling one (they touched it after all ! ) and your province taxes.

Let's say you spent for 30 titles at a 25$ average (Let's be generous)
Canada option : 750 + 67 shipping + 30 tax =847$ final no additional tax in alberta
versus
US option: 750 + 0 shipping + 63 tax = 813$ but if you opened the package and brought them back with you, you wouldn't be charged for customs then , no ? In this case, the US option would ends up better , right ?

Re: November Criterion Sale

Yes, but only slightly. Plus... what if my baggage ends up over 50lbs because of the 30+ discs I'm bringing back? That's an extra $50 to pay the airline.

edit: unfortunately, my US trips require me to pack a little heavier than usual, since I need to bring steel-toed boots, etc. with me.

Seven or eight of them are NOT blind buys.

Unfortunately, as you're probably aware, there isn't much availability of Criterion titles in Canada. They're way overpriced at places like FutureShop, Best Buy, and HMV, and most of the rental stores sold off the majority of their Criterions during 'previously viewed' sales.

The only semi-reliable outlet for Criterion titles is Netflix Canada, but the selection of titles isn't quite THAT good yet.

I'd rather blind buy these titles during this sale, watch them, and sell them off if I don't intend to watch them again. As opposed to never getting a chance to see them at all.

Re: November Criterion Sale

Had the usual YMMV B&N Criterion 50% Sale experience:

First store: cranky sales clerk, only one coupon per account. Seven Samurai.
Next store: cool sales clerk, allowed multiple coupons. Thin Red Line, Darjeeling Limited
Store #3: cool sales clerk, allowed multiple coupons. 8 1/2, Breathless

Update: gotta love that night shift!

I just added a second set of $5 coupons to the B&N coupon list. Should now have 2 different DVD coupons to print out for the stores.

It sounds like Bill and Ted are the cashiers there. Bummer that you weren't able to use the coupons.

Thanks LASER for keeping that thread updated. I've used it many times over the past couple of years.

Was this at the dreaded Arboritum location? I avoid that one like the plague. If not, where were you shot down? I'm still hoping to cash in on some coupon use in the Austin, TX area.
