DeepDiscount silent film Kino sale (up to 58% off)

http://www.deepdiscount.com/silent-films-now-on-sale/

Good sale if you're looking to pick up some Kino silent films, I believe everything's 50-58% off retail price. Includes a few Blu-rays (Battleship Potemkin, The General, Steamboat Bill Jr) & newer Kino releases.

Re: DeepDiscount silent film Kino sale (up to 58% off)

Marty888 - you may want to hold on... I am pretty sure that is the OLD metropolis restored version. A completely new one (with the new found footage) is coming out in november that - in my humble opinion, will probably make the current version obsolete...

I have the current version, btw and it is INCREDIBLE. but I would wait....

Just something to think about.

For anyone who follows Kino closely, is there news of any of the DVD-only titles coming out on BD any time soon?

It figures that the day after gohastings.com ships off my $14 (with shipping) copy of Nosferatu - Ultimate Edition DD has a better sale. Either way, great price.

Re: DeepDiscount silent film Kino sale (up to 58% off)

At this point (before newest material), DVD Beaver favors the Eureka (Region 2) Metropolis over Kino's:

This appears to be a classic example of PAL-NTSC ghosting derived from improper conversion. The Kino - Region 1- NTSC edition uses the same PAL master from the German Transit-Universum (Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Stiftung), BUT they did not pre-convert to NTSC for their standards' (Region 1) audience. I imagine it was done for monetary reasons as it was far less expensive than paying for the conversion. Unfortunately, the result is that those viewing the Kino edition DVD will see all the prevalent flaws that this common transference practice produces - 'ghosting' in motion sequences (see below), blurriness, artifacts and in this case some dis-colorization. I find the Kino has a blueish tinge to the more grey sequences. For purists, another huge difference is that the Kino have pre-translated the title cards from their original German into English. This is totally out-of-place or anyone respecting this films origins. The Eureka intertitles can be optionally subtitled.
The Eureka edition (an exact duplicate of the Transit German DVD, and marginally less expensive) is on 2 discs - pushing the The Metropolis Case A Making Of Documentary to its own 2nd DVD thereby not impinging on the data storage/transfer of the feature film. The Eureka menus give an initial offering of 5 language choices.

Side-by-side comparison shows how much better the Eureka DVD looks, with incredible greyscale, detail, definition and without any of the visible artifacts on the Kino.

Re: DeepDiscount silent film Kino sale (up to 58% off)

If you can view multiregion PAL, it's worth observing that Beaver quite frequently finds Kino's DVDs lacking in comparison.

From Blu-ray.com:

Keaton's Sherlock Jr and Three Ages on Blu-ray

On November 16, Kino Video will release a Buster Keaton double feature, comprised of Sherlock Jr (1924) -about a theater projectionist turned amateur sleuth- and Three Ages (1923) - a slapstick parody of D.W.Griffith's Intolerance. Each will be presented with three different music tracks.

Kino will release the "New Complete METROPOLIS" in a BD edition in November.

Metropolis
Nosferatu

Lubitsch in Berlin
Faust
Michael
Der Letzte Mann
Spione
Diary of a Lost Girl
Frau im Mond
Tartuffe
Bellissima
The Holy Mountain
Asphalt
Shoeshine

I think that's all of them.

With Alpha the only competition, it appears that they have the best transfer of Murnau's Haunted Castle. At 11.23, I might bite.

With that being said, it's important to note that "Metropolis" may be region-locked. We've been asking Kevin of Eureka! if it will be region-locked (because they were taking pre-orders of "Metropolis last week or so). But he can't confirm or comment yet.

That's generally the case with most releases. In my experience i agree with Gary, the MOC's do tend to be better then the Kino's.

The Kino destroys the Alpha. Not even close.

Glad to see the pricing is reasonable. I haven't seen MOC's price yet, but should be in the same ballpark.

I sat through that Alpha disc (thanks, Netflix!) and a segmented version on YouTube would destroy it. The majority of it was literally unwatchable. As far as I'm concerned, I still haven't seen the film.

I'm considering Lost Keaton: Sixteen Comedy Shorts. Anyone have an opinion good or bad about this one?

Faust (2009) and Die Nibelungen are awfully tempting but do you get the feeling, maybe it's better to wait for Blu-ray releases?

For that price, it's definitely worth it, especially since it's a newer title. Granted, it's not silent though. So, you better get it now before they pull it off the site. Hehe...

I recommend the MOC of Faust. I've only seen the Kino of Die Nibelungen & I'm happy with it. Caveat: my set is a 32" standard def crt.
