Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

I'd also be interested in any deals... I've done quite a bit of looking.

So far, it seems like: Take DD's price, add $1-2.

Agreed.

Even worse, the same titles that weren't discounted at DD are not included in this sale either.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

from my recollection, most of the prices at dvdp were a fraction higher than at dd during the semi-annual sales. i always figured it was because dvdp had them "points" and a decent trade-in program.

Makes sense, they're owned by the same company.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Hmmm... yeah, that's been OOP for years. Not really 'valuable' as far as I know, because it went OOP to make way for superior editions of most of those titles. But less than $5 each for those movies is a great deal if you don't care about getting the absolute best in picture quality, etc.

Here's your link... I find it somewhat odd that going through DVDPriceSearch is the only way I could find this title on the DVDPlanet site.

I agree about the quality. The only title here that *might* be considered a bit superior is "Dracula" only because the audio is more complete than other editions although the video is lacking. But if it ships, the price is excellent for this set of true classic horror films.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Out of curiosity, I checked my order history with Planet and I haven't ordered anything from them since the November 08 sale.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Out of the 15 items I purchased at DD (~$216) not a single item was cheaper at DVDP.

Amen. Don't really see any other reason to ever buy from them at this point.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Same here. I've had credit there for over a year and I just placed an order to try to use it up. In the last sale, I managed to find 6 or 7 things at decent prices and used half of it. This time I just decided to burn it even on items that were slightly cheaper elsewhere:

Red Cliff (Parts 1&2, International Cut) Blu-ray
Watchmen (Ultimate 4-disc) Blu-ray

Of course, Watchmen is not in stock, and considering its limited status, I kind of doubt I'll be able to get it, which then opens up the whole well-documented and oft-complained about problem that DVDPlanet seems to forget to re-credit your store credit that was used to order items they can't send. I guess we'll see what happens.

Considering I have hundreds of items on my "to buy" list, it's pathetic that I can't find anything there. On any given day, I could place an order at Amazon or DeepDiscount or a number of other places, but for over a year, and with thousands of dollars spent, I haven't bought anything from DVDPlanet.

I'm rather surprised at this - I bought it new for $60 many moons ago and sold my copy on ebay about 3 years back for $115! That's a steal at 36.69. I hope you get it.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Wasn't going to place an order at DVD Planet but when I saw they still had Terminator Salvation BR on the cheap I got excited and went for it (forgot to go through e b a t e s and missed out on a $.90 refund but oh well).

My order
Catalog: WBD045439 (new)
Title: Terminator Salvation [WS] [Director's Cut] [2 Discs] [Includes Digital Copy] [Blu-ray]
Qty: 1
Price: $6.68

Catalog: WBD016950 (new)
Title: Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series
Qty: 1
Price: $4.81

Catalog: HBD094084 (new)
Title: Creepshow, Vol. 3
Qty: 1
Price: $4.81

Catalog: DV11390 (new)
Title: Hell Comes to Frogtown
Qty: 1
Price: $4.90

Catalog: WBD066911 (new)
Title: Red Sonja
Qty: 1
Price: $4.81

Catalog: WBD007061 (new)
Title: Police Academy 1-4 Collection: 4 Film Favorites [2 Discs]
Qty: 1
Price: $9.61

Total: $35.62

FBC Discount: $5.00
Shipping: $0.00 (Free Economy Shipping)
Sales Tax: $0.00

Total Order: $30.62

Yes I know that everything else was marginally cheaper at DD but the difference in price was $.09 cheaper than paying for shipping on Terminator Salvation.

This will probably be my last order from DVDPlanet now that I don't have any FBCs.

If I remember correctly I used a $40 and then $5 twice (not as patient as I used to be).

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

OK, following up to my earlier post (#13, above), Watchmen was indeed canceled. Of course, I received no notification of that. The shipping notice just listed Red Cliff. And it has completely disappeared from my order history. I had to email them to ask what happened. And they didn't automatically credit my account with the missing store credit I used for the Watchmen order, but they did at least do it quickly after I requested it. Overall, an irritating process.

However, I did get a discount on the shipping (international) due to whatever algorithm they applied to allocate shipping costs between the two items. Then, my full $5 couponcabin coupon was applied, even though the order was now below $50 without Watchmen. Finally, the points pushed me over the 200 points bracket to get me another $5 coupon. So, it didn't work out too badly.

I found another decent deal and ordered it.

"Japan at War," a 4-disc set, is available there, but they have it mistitled as one of the movies in the set, "Father of the Kamikazee." The picture of the item is the box set. The UPC listed there matches the one at Amazon (where it is currently $71.99). The SRP is the same as the set. Although Father of the Kamikazee was released separately, it is long OOP. The directors listed with Father of the Kamikazee are 1) the director of that movie, and 2) the director of Japan's Longest Day, which is also in the set. It also lists various actors from the different movies and the characters they play, including Toshiro Mifune, who is not in Father of the Kamikazee. I decided this must be the set and ordered it. Also, because they have it miscategorized as a single movie, I saved on shipping (international).

From DVDPlanet, it is $39.28.
From DeepDiscount, it is $36.71.

Not a big difference, if you're looking to burn some store credit.

I was able to use up all my credit, and my $5 coupon from my points there. So I'm finally done with them, assuming this ships (says "In Stock").

Update: Got my shipping notification, and the item is now listed as "Japan at War DVD Collection." Cool.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

Thanks for the information about Japan at War, Cheato. I wouldn't have thought twice about it without your post-that title sounds like a World War II documentary collection from the History Channel. I ordered it from DeepDiscount. I've wanted to see Black Rain for many years, and The Battle of Okinawa sounds very interesting.

Re: DVD Planet Summer Sale Thread

I finally placed an order. I had trouble deciding what movie to get so I could use the "couponcabin" coupon (threw in Dirty Harry). I used up about half of my credit.

Title: Beast From 20,000 Fathoms/Them!
Price: $7.65

Title: Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray]
Price: $9.53

Title: Day of the Dead [Blu-ray]
Price: $9.81

Title: Trick 'r Treat [Blu-ray]
Price: $8.15

Title: Major League [Blu-ray]
Price: $8.15

Title: Dirty Harry Collection: 4 Film Favorites [2 Discs]
Price: $9.07

Total: $52.36
Coupon Code (couponcabin): $5.00

Shipping: $0.00 (Free Economy Shipping)
Sales Tax: $0.00
Store Credit: $47.36
