I highly recommend the "How to be a Man" and "How to be a Woman" sets. more than 6 hours of old school (pun intended) educational shorts combined.

Thanks! Inadvertantly, you just saved me $5. I was checking other sites to see if it was also OOS (just in case it might be going OOP) and saw someone was selling it brand new for $30 plus shipping at DVD Empire, so I picked it up (and thus really messed up my budget this month).

Same / similar prices at DVDPlanet. I was finally able to use up my $140 in credit (DVDP hasn't had many sales lately). Thanks for the post!

Who has the skinny on the "Art of Buster Keaton" box? Definitive? Essential? (Got credit to use + the coupon codes at Planet.)

One of these years, when they do this sale, I won't be dirt poor broke, and then maybe I'll finally nab that Buster Keaton set. But until that day...

Re: Deep Discount 52% off sale on select Kino arthouse cinema

I saw Quiet Flows The Dawn & The Siberiade, so like an IDIOT I just made the mistake of ordering from them again, though they've been nothing but a headache in the past.

First, the web site wouldn't take my log in, even when they emailed me a password. Then I ordered as a guest. When i got to the point of their $10 spam sign up i said no, & it took me back to the log in page. No confirmation, no email.

I finally decided to call them. After 15 minutes on hold, I was told that I had to call back tomorrow, as they have no way of knowing if the order went through yet.

Why do i keep doing this to myself? DD is the worst dvd store on the internet. i need to STAY AWAY.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

The quantity is there, the quality is average.
Better prints/transfers of some of the films can be found elsewhere (such as the Steamboat Bill Jr/ The General dbl feature disc from Image or Kino's General Bd for instance).
If you are not hyper critical about PQ/AQ, the set offers a very good. comprehensive overview of his silent work.

I don't know what it's on sale for, but anything under $75 would be a worthwhile value to me.

just my $.02

It's all about the best price depending on circumstances. I ordered Avant Garde Experimental Cinema Vol.1 and Tarkovsky's Stalker (OOS) from DVDPlanet so I could use up the last of my credit.

If that's the Chabrol set, uh, if you're on a CRT TV you'll be fine but they are interlaced garbage on a normal setup. Too bad though, as there's some good films in there

Re: Deep Discount 52% off sale on select Kino arthouse cinema

Finally picked up the Costa-Gavras flick Amen....been meaning to get that for ages. tremendous bargain at $10!

Am I the only one that is completely unimpressed with Kino's aesthetics though? their covers look like high school kids made them on far too many releases. the Contraband cover - a great film - is absolutely atrocious...like the $1 public domain titles you see in dollar stores. just ugly as sin. considering their prices, it bugs me.

Yet another area in which they are thoroughly trumped by MoC.

I just did the same thing, but only ordered the F.W. Murnau set and Cottage On Dartmoor, with $5 off. However, I opted for the free shipping so it may take a while to get here. Not that I'm in any hurry.

Re: Deep Discount 52% off sale on select Kino arthouse cinema

It doesn't seem to be listed as part of the sale, but the 4-film, 4-disc ASIAN ACTION EXTREME collection has definitely been marked down similar to everything else. Current price is $14.98. The set, which comes in a space-saving single-width DVD case, includes three Japanese crime pictures available separately in this sale for $7.98 each—YAKUZA GRAVEYARD, COPS VS. THUGS and 3 SECONDS BEFORE EXPLOSION—which makes it a much better deal than buying those individually. Unfortunately, it also includes the mediocre Thai action picture HIT MAN FILE as part of the set, but at this price, it's basically a bonus.

Yeah, I know...I've wanted the disc for a long time, but other needs took precedence over getting it. Until today.

The Murnau set was a pure impulse buy, I've only ever seen Nosferatu and Sunrise (double feature?) so I'm really looking forward to a nice chunk of German Expression-y goodness.

Re: Deep Discount 52% off sale on select Kino arthouse cinema

7 days into the process and still on back-order. Called "customer service' (lol) - 2 days into an announced sale to mailing list there wasn't enough stock to cover items offered. Sale ended a week ago, no e-mail suggesting estimated arrival from Kino - and they have no idea when any of it will come in, how long I have to wait...could be a month or more - no way to contact Kino - no way to know when i will ever see my stuff....

Who runs a company like this? Am i supposed to just wait for 3 or 4 weeks ond one day, it trickles into DDD and gets sent?!?!

I placed an order with DDD over a month ago during their BBC sale (All Creatures Great and Small, Complete Series). Exactly a month later, it's still on backorder, with no word all this time. Until today, when I finally got an email from DDD saying that the item was still on backorder, but should be back in stock within 21 days. It appears the email is generated and sent automatically after something is BO for 30 days, so it's not really even a status update in the true sense. I assume if it is still OOS in 21-30 more days, DDD will just send another automatically generated email, or cancel the order altogether.

The prevailing opinion is that DDD has gone to hell in recent years. I'm not even sure if they're even under the same management they used to be. I'm getting the distinct sense they may be going the way of Tower Records online retail site, which was bought out by very shady outfit and turned into a complete nightmare to deal with.
