Even at 6 for $10, I didn't want to waste money on stuff I've never heard of. Most of the BDs were the same stuff you see on HWVideo.com. Unfortunately they misled me telling me that red stickered BDs were $3.99 and the rest were $5. It turned out a few were really expensive ($6-$9) and many of the ones without red stickers were also $3.99 and some of the supposed $5 ones were $4.50. Sometimes that extra $1 in my mind makes the difference. I passed on lots of BDs because I already owned the SD DVDs.

However, their system was so stupid that if you wanted to delete an item because the price was higher than you expected, they had to start all over from scratch. After the 3rd time of doing that, I just left out all of the remaining questionable titles. I passed on at least 20 BDs for $4-$5 each that I'd never seen (like Rachel Getting Married, Passengers, The Happening, Last Chance Harvey, 100 Feet, Hotel for Dogs, Suburban Girl, Nights in Rodanthe, The Other Man, Run Fatboy Run, just to name a few). Without Internet access nor time to read reviews, I had to keep telling myself "I will survive if I don't buy these" and just got the ones I was more certain on... just 17 BDs.

Now I've got 17 BDs in DVD sized cases that won't fit on my smaller shelves with BDs. :-( I don't suppose any place sells BD cases cheaply (cheap to me would be 25-50 cents each).
look on ebay, if you buy them in bulk you can get them cheap.

There are a variety of places to get the blu-ray cases. With all of the sales on hollywoodvideo.com and the store closing, i ordered 50 from www.shop4tech.com a while back. I got them for $.40 a piece after using a 20% off coupon. I have had great experiences with this company that has free shipping and no tax. They also threw in a free gift of blu-way wipes to clean discs with my order. The cases have the Blu-ray logo, but it is not in silver (it is transparent). The manager at my hollywood video told me he got 100 of the cases through amazon for about $30. Obviously, the more you buy, the cheaper they get.

I am very happy with my purchase as they look much nicer on my shelf this way.

Hope this helps.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I went back to my closest one (Midwest City, OK) hoping to get in on some .99 cent action, but alas, they are officially closed. The store was empty and dark. I thought they would go until the end of the month. Last week, everything was still 3 for $8 and Newer releases were 3.99, so I don't know if they ever had .99 movies.

I was visiting a friend today and we went up to the store near him where all catalog titles were $1.99 or 6 for $10. We both took advantage. Here's what I picked up

Alice, Sweet Alice
Black Caesar
I Bury The Living
Marebito
Saraband
The Vanishing (Spoorloos) Criterion

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

The beautiful Lehigh Valley is losing its 3 HMs,which stared the GOB about the Ides of March. On the 19th,I succumbed to the 3/$21 for:two disc Looney Tunes Premiere Collection(1/2 of the Vol.1 Golden Collection)(rung up as one item),Tom Dowd & the Language of Music(one of the most important "behind the glass"people in pop music) and the Devil & Daniel Johnston(doc about an amazing Outsder musician). Documentaries probably go either now or at the end. I just didn't want to miss on these as they are rarely deep discounted.
A visit seven days later,3/26now 3/$18. Picked up The Wire,3rd season($30,still about 8 bucks cheaper than Amazon, new)(only complete The Wire left)"Mamma Mia"(Amanda Seyfried is a local) and the 2008 Phila. Phillies video yearbook(World Series champs). They had 3 copies of "Mamma Mia" and the cashier kindly opened all three and we chose the cleanest copy(the Looney Tunes,I discovered at home, was a little rough and two 'toons needed some coaxing in the player). The cashier offered to grind down the LT even after purchase, but I'm not keen on those machines. The offer, though, did not go unnoticed. Hey,and she knew After three bad experiences at HV during their better times,it was nice to be treated fairly. I hope this salesperson finds light at the end of the tunnel.
Also,I found a Criterion, thanks to reading these posts:Monty Python's Life of Brian.Add to that the Universal 2 disc MP's Meaning of Life and a two disc Citizen Kane, which includes the doc The Battle Over Citizen Kane. Both 2 disc sets rang as one sale each.

Popped in at my local HW, which is closing in a few days. Catalog titles were .99 cents each or 6 for $5. They still had a bunch of inventory that was shipped in from other stores.

The Springfield, Illinois store is now at 99 cents (North Grand) or 6 for $5. Used newer movies are 99 cents. Blu Rays are $4 I think but they are really picked over.

I picked up fourteen movies plus four GameCube games and an official strategy guide for Madden NFL 10 for $20 after tax. The movies / documentaries that I picked up were:

Cache (Hidden)
Cronicas
No Man’s Land
Heckler
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Brick
Bruno
Frozen River
The Other Conquest (La Otra Conquista)
Rachel Getting Married
Bad Education
Buena Vista Social Club (pan and scan )
Spellbound
Jimmy Carter – Man From Plains

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I went to a Movie Gallery in Dickson, TN on Sunday where most people (no offense) don't know what a blu-ray movie is. They had probably 50+ blu-rays available and a packed store with no one buying them. The best part is that all the blu-ray movies were all ringing up as $1.98 each.

Needless to say I bought 24 movies. Mostly ones I do not want mind you, but the local trade shops around here will give you between $5 to 7$ each for blu-rays. Do the math and you see where I am going with this.

I took some right to the trade shop, and others I will give a chance and watch first to see if they are worth keeping. If I end up trading them all, I will have turned my cost of around $48 into approximately $150. Probably should have bought more, but they had a lot of duplicates and I did not want to push my luck at the trade-in places.

Anyone else seeing these $1.98 blu-rays anywhere?

LUCKY!!

My nearest store (25 miles away) is closing.
I went on Saturday morning.
They had 12' of rental Blu-rays (none intended for sale, and they weren't selling these yet, either).
There were some PVDVDs for $12.95 and $7.95.
Games were 20% off.
Most of the rental walls were labelled $4.95 for 3 nights or buy for $9.99.
Some were labelled New Releases-Not For Sale.

Weird.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

Well I spent like $60 bucks today. My store is at 80-90% off. Heres my haul for the day. I'll be heading out to a different hollywood after work tomorrow to inflict some more damage to my credit card. And that's not to mention the 8 dvd's I just bought from their online site for $17. Hollywood is treating me good lately.

$1.98 blu-rays:
Waltz with Bashir x2

Lyme Life
The Wackness
Postal
The Invasion

6 for $5 dvd catalog titles:
Demon's
Hamlet 2
William Shatners full moon fright night
Rocket Science
Pittsburgh
Evilenko
Wassup Rockers
Tell no one
Murder Party
Sasquatch Gang
Jack Brooks Monster Slayer
Son of Rambow
Delicatessen special edition
Nightbreed
Drainiac
Kenny
Good Humor Man
End of the Line

Henry Poole is here

$1.98 dvd's:

Sealed DVDs:
Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray $2.60
The fall of the house of usher $2.00

Ghost Town $3.00
Texas Chainsaw Massacre the next generation $1.00

EDIT: oh and I forgot to mention I got 15 miscelanious xbox 360 and ps3 cases for $1.00. To bad they didn't have any empty blu-ray cases in the pile so I can get rid of the dvd cases they give you with the used blu-rays.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

The blu-rays where I went were 80% off of the sale price, not bad but not $2 either. I spent $4 on Rudo y Cursi Blu Ray (which I wanted to see anyway) but the case / disk literally look brand new. I went back and picked up that, plus Season 4 of Alias for $5 (it was 6 disks), I already had the first three seasons.

The other Blockbuster in town has started their clearance sale so I'll be going through this in a few weeks. They are still renting. Oh, when I was browsing around today at the store that will close in two days somebody returned a DVD, it was something like 250 days late. I think the clerk just put it on the shelf for sale (not sure what it was).

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

store in nj finally closed down...final prices were 6 dvds for $5....new releases 3 for $5...not sure about the blu-rays as they were completely sold out...

discounts for the store in nj were pretty straightforward in their progression 10% off, then 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and finally 80% before closing...the discount was raised about once every 5-7 days...calling ahead to the store worked for me as i could find out what the current discount was (to see if it improved), however, they would not divulge when future discounts would occur...also, i recommend confirming store hours, as my store often closed before the hours posted on the website...

for those whose stores are less far along in the closing process, i would definitely recommend going about 6 days before closing, because the titles were totally picked over after that date...last friday seemed to be a magic date for store that closed on tuesday...also, i think i did a pretty good job of buying what i wanted when it was available...there were very few titles i was interested in that were available later in the sale (meaning if i hadn't bought them when i did, i would have missed out)...

obviously your results may vary...best of luck

When I went 10 days ago the local stores was doing 3 for 10 and the pickens were already slim by then i only got 6 films. I bet if I went back there now 80% of there stock would be tv seasons seperated in volumes .

Last store in San Diego closes today.

Went in this morning to find some great deals for $0.48 (The Hangover, Triangle, House of the Devil, etc..)

40 movies for $20 - not bad! (and another 20 for $18 the other day)

A couple years ago I learned to stop buying them early on - I made that mistake and the movies I paid $10 for always ended up still being there with plenty of copies for $1.00 a few weeks later.

Damn, well I didn't get to check out any of the other stores around. Every place I went told me some dick of a resaler came in and just told them he was going to buy everything in the store. Man do I love hoarders.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

calling ahead to the store worked for me as i could find out what the current discount was (to see if it improved), however, they would not divulge when future discounts would occur...
Longtime lurker, first time poster...

From my understanding, employees don't divulge when future discounts occur because they don't know either. I was at a Hollywood closing in OKC on Monday, and it took forever to buy anything. When someone complained, the employee explained that upper management "called at 2pm and told us the new prices." Since management didn't give them any more info or a bar code, they had to enter each individual price in the computer manually. I stood in line for thirty minutes, and there were only three people ahead of me.

It was 12 for $5 (or 49 cents each) when I was there, I got:

Edmond
Flirting with Disaster
Good Night, and Good Luck
The Grand
Hard Eight (!!!) That alone was worth $5.
The Limey
Manhattan
Mean Streets
Midnight Special starring Andy Kaufman
The Muse
Owning Mahoney
Panic
Something Wild
Thief
Timecode
Two Girls and a Guy
Wonder Boys
You Can Count on Me

and got Frozen River on Blu-Ray for $1.49. Though I later discovered the cover was a printer scan.

Today I walked into a feeding frenzy that was beyond madness.

Unfortunately I missed the by 10 minutes because the place was picked clean.

FWD: While driving home all I could do is mumble the words "50 dvds for $5" over and over again.

The lowest price I saw was 49 cents per DVD. I picked up about fifteen more then weeded them down to ten (for $4.90), and left. There is one more store that is going through closure but they just started, as of last week they were still renting.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

The Clifton Park NY and Albany NY stores are done, closed as of this past Wednesday.
There are four other stores that have just started the liquidation process: Saratoga Springs NY, Halfmoon NY, Greenwich NY, and Guilderland NY. I was just in the Guilderland store on Tuesday, and there was no evidence of it closing but I checked their web site last night and saw it listed as "Closing Sale - Savings Storewide", so I don't know when they got notice.

I will most likely wait a couple weeks before making my rounds this time around, I spotted lots of titles I picked up for $4 still there at the last days last time.

Are there any upstate New Yorkers on this board? I won't post any others locally if there isn't anyone on here that are interested.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

Third week in the Lehigh Valley:prices steady at 3/$18 for catalog. Seems like their multiple copies of recent junk in those cardboard dumps in the front carry a bigger discount, but even when it goes to 99 cents,I will pass. Since last post,I found S1 & 2 of The Wire, complete. Mulling over Deadwood-at least the one store nearby does not have complete seasons(due to theft)so I think I'll sit on this till the end. Found another Criterion:Black Orpheus(bossa nova & Jobim);two disc Roger Rabbit(seems like each disc has the complete movie, one has a group commentary voiceover-must be an early DVD,but all of the extra RR 'toons are included, which was a major reason for purchase)and the last episode of Six Feet Under(not a real bargain, but I youtube the finale so often,I figured it was time to own this amazing finale). I've reached my limit of good stuff. It would probably take a final day for me to budge on what's left. Horror, most Action,Westerns mean nothing. Their kiddie section is horrid. Interesting that they always filed Wallace & Gromit under "Special Interest";too hip for the kids and many adults who have never seen them probably think it's juvenile;their loss. Everything has a price-including the dry mop,wet mop bucket and four linear feet of empty DVD boxes in a four foot tray for $10 bucks. Wonder how much the light bulbs are going for? Just wish they had a few empty 30 pk master cartons, since my storage of these purchases,as well as my recent Big Lots hauls, could use a little organization.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I discovered through HV's Web site that the last Movie Gallery in my area was starting its liquidation sale. Only the catalog titles are for sale right now at $7.98 each. Like all of the HV/MG stores I've been to that are in the early phases of their closing sale, this store was still renting. They had gotten the new titles for the week ("Sherlock Holmes," "Alvin and the Chipmunks 2"), which I found pretty strange for a store that's closing.
