Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I was driving by my Hollywood video and surprise, there were signs all over about them closing and movies being on sale.

Didn't buy anything. They were 3 for 20 (catalod dvds) and that was it. Saw a bunch of titles I would buy, but the cases were in badddd condition so I'll just wait.

I will go again next week and hopefully they will be selling the blu rays and rest of the stuff too.

I ended up with limiting myself to a copy of "Moon" for $6 and change.

I saw about 7 movies I would have liked, but the condition of artwork was a complete deal breaker.

In the end I passed up nothing that can't be had for a little more on Amazon.

Any more copies of "Moon" at your store? I'd buy one for like $10 shipped if you're interested and it's available.

mine was only selling catalog titles, 3 for 20 so I picked up some OOP titles:

I probably won't make it back to that one (all the nearby locations have already shut down) until Wednesday evening, but if there's one left, I'll grab it.

Still 3 for $10 at stores around me. However, they've started stocking the floor with large tables filled with more catalog DVD's. It looks like these are from other stores (maybe ones that have already closed?). I'm in Michigan and have seen some DVDs on the table from HWV/MG out in California. For some odd reason, they're selling the ones on the tables for $3.99, not 3 for $10.

The 2 stores near me that are closing had more come in, they were marked at $3.99 but the cashier told me she could scan them at 3/$10 like the other catalog titles. I guess this would depend on the cashier at your store.

I was there on Saturday, all the catalog titles (including the new batch) were 3/$10 or $3.98 each. New releases on the outside walls were still 3/$20 and people were picking those up like crazy - I didn't bother with them since I figured the other video stores in the area run a similar sale (sometimes cheaper) throughout the year. I probably won't return to either store 'til next week.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

3 for 10 deal.

cinema paradiso
cries and whispers (criterion)
waking life
the river (tsai)
attack the gas station
chungking express
america 101
entry level
kontroll
chuck and buck
ghost dog way of the samurai
nobody knows
suicide club
the final patient
tokyo godfathers
what the bleep do we know
thumbsucker
imprint
gamers
persepolis
fahrenheit 451
nanking
whaledreamers
sid and nancy
the long goodbye
detective story
dark portals: the chronicles of vidoco
eden log
son of rambow
devil's playground (amish docu)

3 for 15 (new releases)
the limits of control
500 days of summer
thirst

Bluray (at another blockbuster starting to close)
Knowing 10$
A Serious Man 15$

Whatever I watch and do not like or rate at a 6/10 or below will go back to the used video exchange (I made sure none of the back covers were notched or cut). I will get 1 to 2 dollars for each of these movies in store credit at the used dvd exchange so some of this money will be recycled for the best thing to spend money on... I approach it like (renting all at once). Netflix rentals can get too expensive for not being able to keep anything.

If I bought these from Amazon used from individual sellers I saved 67 dollars if you do not count the 3 dollar shipping fee. If you count the 3 dollar shipping fee I saved 150. If you think dvd's are a waste of money I lost about 140. I enjoyed it.

The store closing hobby isn't anywhere near over. I have my eye on a blockbuster and a movie gallery that are just starting to close. I like to go buy foreign movies at these store closings.

They sold the ones on the tables for 3/10. Also the second store didn't make me end on a number of 3... That was nice of them. Hollywood video's business policies and the way they do store closings, well, they are stupid. No wonder Blockbuster was #1.

I bought moon for 11 dollars in store credit at the used dvd exchange but my store here close to my house had 4 copies for 5 dollars a piece. Pretty good deal for fans of that film!

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

Went back last week and the new releases were almost all gone. Sorry to the guy who wanted a copy of Moon.

I know very well there's a lot of OOP stuff in the Foreign pile, but I honestly didn't have the time to try and figure out which would still be worth getting, despite the awful condition the discs and cases were in.

I did see the title "Death Bed" in a stack of horror movies, and nearly knocked a woman over to get it, ultimately finding out it was a more recent, "Death Bed" and not the infamous "Death Bed: The Bed That Eats."

Strangely enough, the last open Hollywood Video in the area had better used deals, with a number of "new" releases marked at $4.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I found a sealed new, OOP copy of The Times of Harvey Milk for $10 at the East Providence, RI Hollywood Video. New factory sealed titles were 50% off, library titles were 3 for $10, and what was left of new releases were around $7.

Now, old titles are 3 for $8, and used Blu Rays are $5. There was also a sign saying that they were closing for good in six days.

Note: The signs said individual old titles were $3 and Blu Rays were $6, but they rang up at $2.66 for one old title and $5 for the Blu Ray. I picked up McLibel on DVD and Disk 1 of Tru Blood, Blu Ray (episodes 1 & 2) for $7.66 plus tax.

Here in Michigan: $3/each or $3 for 8 catalog titles and still 3 for $15 new releases. Blu-rays were $5.98 for catalog blu-rays and others were 60% off.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

It really depends on when the store first started to go out of business. I stopped by a second Hollywood Video here in town, they are going out of business but they are at the first stage so prices are really high. And they are still renting DVDs. The first store has six days left, I'd say the second store has a month left?

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I hit up the Springfield, MA store on their last day this past Wednesday. Got there early, just a few minutes before they changed prices. ALL DVDs were 99 cents, aside from new releases ($3) and Blu-Rays ($4). I found that kind of funny because all new DVDs were also 99 cents.

That particular location hadn't sold much stock the previous three times I went, and most of the HV/MG stores get additional stock from other stores that are closing, so it was a goldmine of great stuff for a buck each. I suggest going early on the last day if you can.

It's good to know that 99 cents is the bottom line, I'll be checking the local store regularly over the next few days. Though they may be shifting their stock to the store that just started to go through closure.

Another price drop here in NJ

Catalog dvds are 6 for $10, with a select few at the front priced at $1.99
New release dvds are 3 for $10

Blu-ray new releases were $4.49 (though simply listed as 70% off)
Catalog blu-rays were $3.98

I left the store with about 15 blu-rays and 40 dvds...looked like santa claus carrying my huge bags full of movies out the store...

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I went to a HW Video which said it was 6 days to closing, and the prices were the same as posted by coop22. Unfortunately I didn't have time to scour things carefully (I arrived 30 minutes before closing). I moved through the catalog section in 10 minutes and only picked out 3. Even at 6 for $10, I didn't want to waste money on stuff I've never heard of. Most of the BDs were the same stuff you see on HWVideo.com. Unfortunately they misled me telling me that red stickered BDs were $3.99 and the rest were $5. It turned out a few were really expensive ($6-$9) and many of the ones without red stickers were also $3.99 and some of the supposed $5 ones were $4.50. Sometimes that extra $1 in my mind makes the difference. I passed on lots of BDs because I already owned the SD DVDs.

However, their system was so stupid that if you wanted to delete an item because the price was higher than you expected, they had to start all over from scratch. After the 3rd time of doing that, I just left out all of the remaining questionable titles. I passed on at least 20 BDs for $4-$5 each that I'd never seen (like Rachel Getting Married, Passengers, The Happening, Last Chance Harvey, 100 Feet, Hotel for Dogs, Suburban Girl, Nights in Rodanthe, The Other Man, Run Fatboy Run, just to name a few). Without Internet access nor time to read reviews, I had to keep telling myself "I will survive if I don't buy these" and just got the ones I was more certain on... just 17 BDs.

Now I've got 17 BDs in DVD sized cases that won't fit on my smaller shelves with BDs. :-( I don't suppose any place sells BD cases cheaply (cheap to me would be 25-50 cents each).
