Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I stopped by 2 different stores on my lunch break. Picked up a used copy of Crackdown that looked brand new w/ insert and regular packaging for $7. I also got new copies of Metal Slug for the Wii ($14) and Ratatouille for the 360 ($7). The selection varied wildly between the stores. I would recommend hitting up multiple stores if you don't find what you want at one.

The location nearest me was a joke. The guy there said their store rarely got Criterion editions when they were doing well in business. This was quite obvious from the number of PD releases on the shelves that would otherwise have a much better version available. Honestly didn't see one film there worth $7, but I'll probably gather a list of more obscure and hard to find movies that might be hiding and go back.

Can I ask which one you went to? I stopped by one in Hillsboro which didn't have much and one out on Sandy in Portland which didn't have a whole lot either. I went by the one on Burnside which I know is just a treasure trove of titles but apparently the landlord had locked it up a week ago because they hadn't been paying the rent like some other stores mentioned here. That was a huge disappointment which felt like even more of a kick in the gut when you can still see all the shelves in there untouched.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

Movie Gallery in Bloomington, IN:

$4.99 each
Spiderwick Chronicles
City of Ember
Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)

All of the used DVDs are 30-60% off on one side of the store, and 3 for $20 on the other. The new release rentals are not yet included in the sale, but everything else is. Went in primarily looking for family movies under $5 for the kid - found two and picked up the 2008 DTESS just out of morbid curiousity. Didn't look for any CC's, will probably drop back in later next week to see what's shaking.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

Picked up for 3/20$. They still aren't selling new releases and have 7 copies of Moon (Grrr I want that).

Joyeux Noel
You are Alone
Windcroft (probably will regret this one)

I'm going to the other Movie Gallery tommorow in my area to shop in the morning. It is 30 miles away. The one I shopped at today is 5 miles. I absolutely am not impressed with most of the titles the one near my house has, and I hate how the store closings are being conducted.

I went to a Blockbuster that is closing 35 miles away and picked up these for 6 dollars a piece

Harry and Tonto
Barton Fink
Ong Bak 2
Antibodies
In the Loop
Bright Star
Broken
Timecrimes
Black Book

I like Blockbuster a lot more than Movie Gallery. I'm kind of sad to see Blockbuster go. I don't have any negative feelings about Movie Gallery/Hollywood Video's troubles after shopping at the closing and hearing the local staff talk. Today one of them said that "maybe people aren't buying movies any more because they are getting back to real life" very loudly in the store as the reason why they are going out of business. I thought it had more to do with Redbox, the always busy used dvd exchange, Netflix and their watch it now, amazon independent web sellers, and piracy; but maybe she's right instead.

I'd vote more for the fact that corporate business models don't work in today's market. Video stores are not an industry that sell a product -- yet that is what Blockbuster is focused on and Hollywood lost sight of a long time ago. Video stores sell service and are not high profit margin businesses. The corporations think that getting exclusive movies and 1,000 copies of Gigli at $6 a pop are answers to their problems.

Independents know that it is more about the relationships you develop with your customers. Trust me, if you know your customer's family's names and keep suggesting movies he likes, not only will he wait three weeks to see "Ishtar 2: Isht-harder", he may even bring your staff a pizza every now and then.

i agree.

one thing that really irked me about HW video was the fact that their selling TV series individually. Meaning that they took seasons of TV shows, and are selling each disc individually instead of bunching them together and selling as a lot.

So for a basic 4 disc set, you'd be paying 27 bucks for a used set w/o any inserts or boxes.

When a blockbuster went out of business around here, they bunched the dvds together and sold them off for 20 bucks a season. While that's not an excellent deal, it's fair, IMO.

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010

I gave in at 5 bucks or 3 for 15$. Yeah I know. They will go lower. I don't care though. I don't want to wait. I paid 5.50 on average for dvd's worth 9.47 on average if shipped from amazon in used/very good condition. My wife's were 6.41 on average so we paid a little less for those. Three or four of the ones I picked were 20+ used.

I bought:
Lost (a movie)
Midnight Express
Citizen X
Priest
Badland
Show Me Love (...Amal)
The Vertical Ray of the Sun
The Company of Wolves
Breaking the Waves (yay)
Princess Mononoke
The Civilization of Maxwell Bright (on watch it now but I wanted it anyway)
My Summer of Love
Don't Look Now
The Signal
Mountains of the Moon
SFW
Powder
Soylent Green
Sling Blade
Leon the Professional International
The Eel
Kikijuro
Dark Mind
Babe: Pig in the City
-------------------------
My wife bought

Mist: the tale of a sheepdog puppy
Love in the time of cholera
Gods and Generals
Dog of Flanders
All the Pretty Horses
The Bear
The Last Confederate
Ring of Bright Water
Gettysburg: Three Days of Destiny
The Lost Battalion
The English Patient
Possession
The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Ken Burns The War

Overall it was probably cheaper than the internet at 5.25 a piece. We will sell all that we won't watch more than once back to the used dvd exchange for store credit. Faster and cheaper than netflix and much less hassle though I do have the 9.99 plan for the unlimited watch it now.

***I heard a tip from a store employee that not this Monday but next Monday they will start selling new releases. This is his best guess. It might not turn out to be true but you never know. I would like to buy Moon (Sam Rockwell) and A Serious Man for a reasonable price

If you order online, most DVDs are $4.99 each and Blu-rays are $6.99 each. Throw in coupon code 25PV and you get 25% off and free shipping.

Yeah, I noticed people nearly clearing the shelves of TV stuff. I had to chuckle at them blindly buying stuff like LOST S1 and 2 for $40 each, when they could go to Target and get those two seasons together, new for $40 total.

Right, but I get the feeling most, if not all, of the titles they're selling online are the PV drops of new titles, whereas most of us are aiming for the scarcer library dvds. None of the titles I wanted are available online, and I'm pretty sure most of us can say that!

I did buy a little too soon. But I couldn't get these for that price

Show Me Love (...Amal)
The Vertical Ray of the Sun
The Company of Wolves
Breaking the Waves (yay)
The Eel

You really save if you wait until they are 2 or 3 bucks. I felt like splurging early though.

Scratch that. I found a handful of great titles, but what a pain! I browsed 72 pages and randomly searched a dozen actors and directors before I collected 5 titles worth ordering. I'll post what I got if and when I get them.

My store said the new releases will be available on Friday. Blu Rays were still 11 dollars, I think I may stop by Friday and see if the prices are lower, I may pick up Spider-man 2 since I can pick it up individually.
