DEAD NOW: Red Dwarf Complete Collection at Amazon $49.99

Shamelessly stolen from Fatwallet.

I considered buying it from Amazon UK when it was around for 32 quid. I think it's an absolute bargain at this price.

Ordered. The funny thing is they are currently buying it back USED for $48.50 (Amazon GC, but still). So you could watch 8 seasons of greatness, then sell it back for only $1.49 loss (assuming the price doesn't change). But I would never sell this. I already own 5 seasons, but for this price I'll have some seasons to give as gifts. Great deal!

Great deal. I think I paid $15/apiece back when they came out and that was an AWESOME deal.

I've never seen this or heard of it. Is it just good for the comedy or is it science fictionally interesting too, like, say, Farscape?

I'll give you the setup...

A low-level technician/idiot named Dave Lister is on the Red Dwarf, a mining spaceship in deep space... he gets busted for having a cat aboard (which is against the rules) and has a choice: give up the cat to be destroyed or be chriogenically frozen till they return to Earth so that he can be court marshalled. He chooses the later. When we eventually is woken up he finds that because of a radiation leak the entire crew has died and he had been frozen until the radiation has subsided... which turns out to be millions of years later. In that time the super-computer has declined in intelligence to that of a simpleton, the only human left aboard is his uptight roommate (Rimmer) who has been stored as a hologram, and his cat has evolved into a dancing black man known only as The Cat. Together they go on adventures in an effort to get back to Earth.

Soooooo... it's not to be taken seriously. :) It's more comedy than sci-fi although those elements are certainly there.

Oh, BTW... there was recently a 3-episode miniseries called "Back to Earth" that is available now on DVD and Blu-ray and because of the success of that series a new full-length series should be coming late 2010.

It definitely has science fiction, with fairly poor special effects... But it's mainly a comedy. If you like British comedies, I'd say you should give it a try. Perhaps youtube has an episode you can watch first...
I wouldn't compare it to Farscape in any capacity. Two completely different animals... The only similarity between those shows is that they are trying to get back to Earth...

I did not know about a new series coming in 2010! You have just brought great joy to my day!!! :)
Back to Earth was decent. I hoped for better. But I'm elated about a new series!!! I have had the pleasure of meeting the entire main cast, and producers. Red Dwarf is in my top 20 shows of all time... But that's just me...

Grabbed one. Yes it's dated... but honestly it's really funny if you like British humor.

Wow...
I remember when these were like $25 a season.

I'm so glad I didn't bite when it dropped to 90$ last month. Ordered.

For those not familiar, make sure to watch an episode first. This is not a show for everyone. It's love or hate for most people.

WOW! Thanks OP! It's currently a bit over $116 at DD.

And a heads up for those on the fence...

According to Michael's Movie Mahem this is OOP.

And then some...

My tally so far this season from amazon would have cost over double what I've spent had I made the same purchases at DD. Even then it's *still* significantly less than what it'd have been at DD had they done the traditional 25% off sale.

I've been meaning to get more of the seasons, can't really pass for that price.

If you like the show, this is a must. It's never, ever, ever been this cheap. This is literally only a little bit more than how much a single series used to cost.

I have six of the series sets. The question is can I recoup my $ if I get this by selling the sets I currently own?

^Right now at Newtown Video you could get $46.82 for the 8 series sold individually (minus shipping). I would guess this would be about what you could expect anywhere else except maybe ebay.

Re: Red Dwarf Complete Collection at Amazon $49.99

It's $73.99 currently.

Looks like I ordered mine just before the price went up. It seemed like I couldn't pick up a Sci-Fi mag in the '90s without reading SOME mention of this show.

Really don't like spending this much on a blind buy (no matter how good a deal), but with Amazon offering the $50 GC for a used copy, it appears I can break even at the very least if I don't dig it.
