So much for Christmas shopping-- which I've done almost exclusively through DD for the past few years. Hello, Amazon.

not to jump on the bandwagon here, but I too will probably be drastically changing my dvd buying habits as a result of what appears to be replacing the bi-annual sale. The bi-annual sale basically meant that I could buy all my dvd's in one swoop and feel confident that I got the best deal possible without obsessing and spending way too much time tracking prices.
I sent deep discount an email not to complain (cause I'm sure they're doing this cause they have to) but to give them some feedback and let them know that basically as a result, I'll be spending a whole lot less money there. Can't hurt to try.

Ditto...I've been putting $3k or so a year into these sales over the past few years. Can't complain too much since it represents the bulk of a nice collection, but I'll certainly miss the ease of ordering from one source and having that big "event" a couple of times a year. It was nice while it lasted.

I was going to say the same thing. Maybe DVDPlanet will have a 25 percent off sale so all isn't lost. I was going to start buying blu-ray titles with the next sale but I guess it will be wait and see.

I'm especially ticked off since this likely means that DVDPlanet wont do the sale anymore either...and I have almost $450 in credit waiting to be spent. :mad2:

$300 in credit for me, so I hear you. DVDPlanet's blu-ray prices were even higher than Deep Discount's, so I'm not too excited.

Of the dozen or so items currently on my wishlist comprising what I'd have ordered this time, the prices will be ~$5-~$10 per item *higher* than if this were a traditional 20% off sale. Because of this I'll most likely sit this one out. It makes me sad as I've added significantly to my collection because of the really good DD sales in the past. This one doesn't qualify for that statement... of course, neither do *most* of the "sales" they've had since the July 25% off sale.

We can only hope that they'll see enough of a decline in sales that the good sales will return in December and/or later.

Over the past few years I went from ordering exclusively from DD, to only ordering during the 20% off sales, to now removing them from my bookmarks and not bothering with them at all.

Not only is this no sale at all, they have raised their prices higher than anyone else.

A look at a few titles from my wishlist:

Indiana Jones and the KOTCS: $32.96 vs. $31.99 Barnes and Noble or $25.99 Amazon
Poltergeist: $29.17 vs. $27.99 Barnes and Noble or $19.99 Amazon
Patton: $21.37 vs. $16.99 Barnes and Noble or $14.99 Amazon

Sad to see it go but the writing's been on the wall for awhile.

And to add insult to injury, I just looked up the one title I wanted to buy before Christmas, the "It's a Wonderful Life" Blu-ray. It will be $0.14 HIGHER than it is now during the "sale" :-)

Yeah, I noticed that with a lot of DVDs. They don't even carry the one BD I tried to look up. Pisses me off Amazon, etc still want $20+ for Jingle All the Way.

Well this sucks. I normally purchase a lot during their sale (mostly anime) and the boxsets I want end up being about $0.39 cheaper than they are now.

I hope they retract the ad but I doubt it will happen. Wish i'd known about this sooner- I would have written them off earlier instead of waiting for a sale that won't be coming and spent the money I saved elsewhere.

Sad I used to love shopping DD all the time year round. They have made it so Amazon is the only place for me to look online. I wish they would at least try and be competitive. Get the deals that Big Lots or Dollar Tree gets and try to take our money. At this point I have a hard time figuring who uses them anymore.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

After the late start and underwhelming discounts for the summer sale, I had mentally prepared for the fact that the usual 20-25% off might not happen; I've chipped away at my wish list over the last couple of months with Amazon, Wherehouse, CH, and Second Spin sales. My wish list is currently down to six items and less than $100, so no huge loss if I have to keep looking for deals on those titles.

As far as DVD Planet goes-- they've shut down the "Quote machine" after never putting any of the items they bought from us up for sale used, and it took them two days to activate the coupon after the summer sale started. I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll suddenly get this right.

Hopefully we can make this thread as long as the classic DDD sale threads in order to show them our disappointment.

Hmmm..... WB sells these direct with a $19.95 MSRP, but has email sales for 25% off, and often bundles together titles to bring them down to around $10 each.

DeepDiscount has them listed for $29.95 MSRP, so at 40% off they will be $17.97 each.

There's just no end to the excitement ......

Lets not forget about adding in the WB shipping charge of $5 per disk. While the package deals can get you down to around $10 a film some times and periodically they have free shipping at certain price levels. Most of the times the Insiders discount gets negated by shipping charges so $20 - $5 + $5 brings you back to twenty. As a result, some might find the $18 cost appealing when just buying individual titles.

Sad to see it go but the writing's been on the wall for awhile.

You compared three titles and the writing is on the wall?

I just compared the 30 titles on my wishlist and the totals would be if I purchased all 30:

from Amazon: $1150
from DD pre sale: $1124
from DD during sale: $1001

If you check DVD search:
- Amazon has the lowest price on 6811 titles
- DD has the lowest price on 8075 titles
- B&N has the lowest price on 1167 titles

To forecast their doom or compare them to B&N is ridculous. I'm not happy about the sale either, but not because they don't have low prices but because they set the bar so much higher in the past that just beating another vendor's price is not enough anymore, we expect them to stomp on the competition.

Seriously, who in the hell at DD made this decision and first they close the store in Naperville, IL and now this wacko sale of theirs starting on 11/13/09...it's bad enough Best Buy tries to rip people off and Wal-Mart is diluting their inventory to only carry a few titles, so what's next now? Not a good year for Deep Discount but maybe there's hope they can overturn this decision and do what's right for all of us and bring the semi-annual sale back and leave it at 25% and that's that, just my opinion. This blows!

This is really bad news for seniors like me. First, the government announces there will be NO cost-of-living (COLA) increase in Social Security payments for old folks like myself in 2010, and now Deep Discount gives us their middle finger for Christmas. On top of that, most health insurance premiums will be going up another 10%-25% in January. I guess I'll just watch more free TV and not buy as many DVDs as before.

DD's annual revenue hinges on these sales. If they're projecting a huge drop in cash flow, expect them to turn things around quickly.

If anyone from DD is reading this, I just want to thank you for MANY years of good sales. Nothing lasts forever, and some of us do realize that these sales were not likely- in and of themselves- a good revenue generator for you.
I always assumed they were a loss leader intended to build awareness/market share for sales during the rest of the year.
No company is going to prosper cutting their margins so thin twice a year, just so the people that only shop there twice a year can get a bargain they feel they have become entitled to.
I'm surprised and disappointed to read so many "f**K them, what have they done for me lately" posts here. More proof of how spoiled we are as a culture I guess.

My 'want list' is down to about 4 things right now. That's partly because I've loaded up on so much crap in previous sales that I still haven't watched, and partly because studios slammed the brakes on releasing the kinds of things I care about. In any case, after all the addition and subtraction is done, DD will still be cheaper for these things than anywhere else. Will they be as cheap as they would have been last year? No, but so what? The point is, These are titles I want, and I want to try to get the best bargain I can with them. And that will still be with DD.

Well, I'm very interested in Garry Shandlings Show, which at the current price of 81.18 at DD, is a steal (the have had it priced that way since preorder status). Amazon has it for 139.99. I was hoping for the 25% sale to reduce it further (but I bet it would've been bumped up in price), but oh well. I may still order it.
