Re: DD & DVDPlanet 25% Sale... Lists Only Thread (Summer 2009)

I traded some DVDs to another poster here for a chunk of their DVD Planet credit, and went with:

Carnal Knowledge
Forbidden Hollywood Collection Vol. 3
Man Who Shot Liberty Valance/Shane
Rodan/War of The Gargantuas
Telefon/St. Ives
Winchester '73

:O Awesome! Which Ingles stores exactly? Definitely not the one I work at, lol, because I check their used DVD racks almost daily.

Also, I am heading to the Big Lots on Woodruff Rd. later, so I can look for some stuff if you want. =) Just shoot me a PM

Free Shipping = Media Mail. It's not DeepDiscount's issue, it's the post office. Media Mail gets loaded onto their trucks after everything else (if there's room). If you want faster shipping, you're gonna have to pay for it (i.e., upgrade to UPS).

Re: DD & DVDPlanet 25% Sale... Lists Only Thread (Summer 2009)

10 days and we're still only on page 15.

...and we still have a bunch of posts that on things other than what someone just ordered, or just received (including this one).

I understand why this is, but just can't help marveling at how much has changed in just a few short years. If this thread is indicative of the general response to the sale outside of this forum, I wonder if the powers that be would consider extending the sale another few days-week to accommodate the 8/4 releases?

I'd definitely make another order if they did.

We're only on page 9 if you're on the "maximum" settings.

True. The number of extremely good deals on DVDs has been increasing lately. Between Big Lots, CH, Walmart bargain bins, and price drops to $5 or less at most retailer within a year, you can get pretty much any non-Criterion for $5 within a year of release. So 25% off standard discount pricing isn't as attractive as it used to be. They'd be getting more business if B&N wasn't having their Criterion sale at the same time.

But yeah, "the sale" is getting less and less significant every year.

DDD sale is relatively useless if you're lucky enough to get the deals lots of Americans do. For us Canadians, they rape us on shipping, but it's still a bit of a deal. Plus, guys like me buy Mondo Macabro, Redemption and titles of the like, which never go on sale anywhere as far as I've known.

I used to order tons from DDD, but even so, I have found other sites that have sales regularly that ship to Canada and can compare very well to and beat DDD sale prices. Because of that, I don't wait around for them anymore. It's like $1 or $2 more... a lot of times cheaper and it's worth not having to wait six months for something for a buck, no matter how frugal you are. Prices on most discs have actually gone up on titles that still weren't even new releases when I participated in my first sale four or five years ago.

I don't know if I'll ever even bother with a DDD sale again, but I had a lot of stuff building up this year that I wanted to get out of the way.

Speak for yourself... I have a $5000+ wish list at DD and it's *all* std DVDs, many of which do *not* have a BR release or one anywhere close to a radar much less on one.

Yeah, right. Well, considering the total lack of silent titles and near total lack of pre-1945 films (classic TV, etc., etc.) on Blu-ray, I'm pretty sure that for most people, there is still plenty to prioritize on SD.

I use the DDD sales to pick up more obscure titles from guys like Mondo Macabre, Dark Sky, Synapse, MYA,etc. Basically I keep a list of new releases from these more obscure companies then buy them twice a year.

I agree that mainstream titles can eventually be found cheaper elsewhere.
DVD prices (new and used) are cratering. Pretty amazing that 3 years ago $5 was a standard price for used vhs at local flea markets. Now used vhs are $1. Used and new dvds can be found for as low as $3. TV seasons are showing up for $3.

Why not just order online? With the military link and the additional 20% coupon, I paid $15.03 for Third Man, w/free shipping.

Yeah-everytime I see someone make the comment like "there's just not much left to buy anymore" or "everything worth getting already got released" I'm left speechless. I just shake my head and have to move to another thread for a while.
If you love movies, you are constantly discovering films, actors, directors you never heard of, never seen, or never paid attention to before. And there is always something -new to you- worth investigating.

As long as catalog titles are being released- even in a year like this with so many studios scaling back- there will always be things worth seeing and owning.

There is just so much more worthwhile beyond Spielberg, Lucas , and the movies of the 80's...

As others have observed, times have changed a great deal. Big Lots and other bargain outlets, plus the B&N Criterion sale going on at the same time, have made DD less newsworthy for some. I never go crazy during these sales--don't think I've ever bought much more than half a dozen titles during one--but in the last few weeks I've had a bonanza in older catalog titles obtained from B&N (Criterions), Amazon Marketplace, etc.

I just ordered two new releases from the DD sale, and that's it. Not much new I'm interested in right now, but I still have a love of catalog titles and opportunities to get them cheaper than DD are just really good right now.

Agreed. Can't understand why anyone would buy Criterions from anyone but B&N right now. Even if one is not a member, or doesn't have a store near them, with available coupons most can be had online for at least $2-4 cheaper per title than DD with 25% off.

Same reason people are still ordering Mad Men S2 from DD I guess.
