I learned today that Barnes & Nobles and BN.com will be having a 50% off Criterion sale from 7/14 - 8/3.

Not sure if this includes their Blu-rays, but I would think so. I'll find out and confirm when I can.

I think they ran this sale or a similar one last year, so I guess it did pretty well for them.

They also have their B2G1 going on right now. It ends July 7th.

If they stack, that would be awesome. But I doubt it...

If DD does the B1G1 Criterion sale again, then the BN deal becomes much less desirable.

Don't forget B&N has discount links, plus coupons, and free UPS shipping. Could be less than DD for some titles...

Any thought on which titles would come out to a good price point?

It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up Ran (Kurosawa) and Contempt (Godard) if you don't already own them, since they recently went out of print. My B&N still had both as of last week, although I snagged Contempt as part of the B2G1.

I don't think either of those titles are oop. They just don't have the rights to release them on blu-ray.

Edit: I'm mistaken. They are oop according to the Criterion website.

Not to be a thread crap, but the one good thing about Barnes and Noble is that you know what they're going to charge for their discs.

Assuming this includes Blu-ray, I'll be picking up the Seventh Seal and possibly Bottle Rocket.

Hmmmm...had no idea that Contempt went out of print. This was listed as one of their (supposedly) first dozen or so BD titles but has never materialized on that format.

I do own Criterion's SD release of the film; it is excellent and loaded with extras so for anyone who wants it and doesn't have it already, now is the time to make your move.

EDIT: Just checked criterionforum.org. As Neil M. said, BD rights are gone, so perhaps this title is disappearing from the collection for a while, if not for good. Carpe diem.

Stupid question: does this 50% off include Criterion pre-orders? I'd love to get Repulsion for twenty bucks if I could.

I don't know, but if the sale runs until 8/3, you could pick up Repulsion on the release date and get it on sale.

Another possibly-very-stupid question: Is there any advantage at all in taking advantage of this sale in store rather than online?
