New release $ comparisons and store exclusives / freebies - 2/08/09 to 2/14/09
Big Release Comparisons
These weekly threads are for price comparisons of all the big new releases, and the posting and discussion of that particular week's store exclusives and freebies.
These lists will likely be incomplete until Wednesday or so, since DVDs are released on Tuesday and one of us needs to visit all the stores to confirm things.
Links to the master list and to the previous and next week's thread are below.
Volunteers needed: I regularly go to Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, and Walmart; but don't visit the other stores every week. If you work at or regularly go to the FYE/TWEC chains, Costco, Borders, K-mart/Sears, Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster, Hot Topic, or any other store that has DVD exclusives; we'd appreciate any updates you could give us.
All Stores - Thread for all movie cash and free ticket deals
tons of free movie deals at various retailers, see the above linked thread for full details
Best Buy -
$10 gift card when you buy any version of Miracle At St. Anna and Blindness
new Back to the Future releases - film cell with each
repackagings of Scarface, E.T., The Bourne Ultimatum, and 40yr Old Virgin - film cells
Target - I have not been in the store to verify all new exclusives; has anyone else been there?
Wal Mart / Sam's Club - I have not been in the store to verify all new exclusives; has anyone else been there?
K-Mart/Sears -
I searched and found nothing new
FYE/Sam Goody/other TWEC - I have not been in the store to verify all new exclusives; has anyone else been there?
Barnes and Noble -
I searched and found nothing new
Borders -
I searched and found nothing new
Costco -
I searched and found nothing new
"Lesser" stores with no exclusives this week spoilered
Spoiler:
Canadian Exclusives - I have not been in the stores to verify all new exclusives; has anyone else been there?
This is week #164 of listing these exclusives.

Seems with the departure of Circuit City we are not seeing much in the way of exclusives anymore.

But I actually sort of hope that the exclusive thing slows down. I'm pretty much out of space. I'm not going to be buying them all anymore, or making my weekly runs to 10+ chains. I'll keep doing these threads as long as you all want, but the data collection will be more in your hands.

For now, I'm only interested in Back to the Future and I'm praying it doesn't have any exclusives. I bought an alarming number of Iron Man and Dark Knight DVDs last Christmas.

Damn, I just saw on the DVD Talk forum that Best Buy has a film cell for each of the 3 movies. Here we go again.

Back to The Future I, II, III each with Film Cell @ BestBuy (Also Other Universal Tiltles had the same Film Cell sticker Including the Bourne Ultimatum and like three others)
This might not be news but:
Also Best buy had some exclusives I had never seen before like a 2 disc set of:
And a CD Rom square disc bundle in front of case of Ghost Rider:2 Disc edition(No slipcover).

ok i went to another bestbuy with the bttf dvds with film cell. then i see, as already mentioned, about four or five other older titles with an "exclusive film cell" sticker. so anyone know what these exactly are? i foolishly assumed that these were bttf exclusives with a film cell repro from the movies themselves, but now im guessing they are not.

Very hard to say, hindolio.
As you probably noticed, the sticker is not specific to any of the titles and seems to indicate that the film cell itself may not even be specific to the title it comes with! I did end up buying all 3 new BTTF DVDs but I'm waiting to find out what the deal is before I open them.
Also, does anyone know if the content of II or III is new/different from what came on the original 3-movie set from a few years ago? I know the original BTTF has the footage from the BTTF ride (something I've always wanted to have) but is there any new incentive to buy II and III again (other than the nice uniformity of the packaging)?

Very interesting, thanks!
Looks like each BTTF film comes with a unique cell from that very film, a different one for each of the three. I guess this seals it for me, I'll need to keep these new versions, even though the only new video content appears to be on the bonus disc of the first film. And yes, I too wonder what the cells for the other non-BTTF film cells are like (and if I'll be able to resist the urge to re-buy films I've already purchased just to get these new exclusives). Ugh.

thanks johnsun. i just saw that post a short while ago too and, like ajay, i am curious what the film cells for the other dvds are. quite confusing overall i must say.
i guess bestbuy still thinks they can sucker all of us into buying anything if they slap an "exclusive" sticker on it. oh wait! it worked.

Re: New release $ comparisons and store exclusives / freebies - 2/08/09 to 2/14/09
Trevor, the titles I noticed were all DVD (not Blu-ray) and were existing catalog releases, same packaging, with the new sticker and film cels added to them. They were all grouped together on one rack, separate from the new release section. Another title was "E.T." by the way. I'm trying to explain to myself why I don't need to re-buy them...

wait a second... so all these older titles, et, scarface, etc all have a film cell from each respective movie inside the dvd case?
but just logicistically, how is this possible? as someone would have to open factory sealed dvds and insert a card into each one and reseal them. or am i missing something here?

That's a good point.
It does sound rather unlikely, but based on the evidence at hand, it appears to be the case.
I'll try to double check when I hit BB again this week.

Did anyone find any other exclusives for Back to the Future? I got the film cels at BB and found nothing at Target.

Re: New release $ comparisons and store exclusives / freebies - 2/08/09 to 2/14/09
Went out and bought "E.T." today and sure enough, I opened it and found a film cel/frame from the "E.T." movie. Not so bad of a double dip since I actually hadn't picked up this edition yet. When I got to Best Buy, the endcap had been dismantled and the discs had been relegated to their normal spots on the shelves, so I don't know what other titles were available, besides the ones mentioned above. Does anybody remember seeing any others?
