Is there any easy way to tell which of these are actually still Widescreen, and not fullscreen only (like Still Crazy)?
|

Sweet Deal!!

I guess it's a good deal as far as the entertainment value is of concern, but in terms of cinematographic value, the recent DeepDiscount Criterion Collection deal will take years to beat.
|
If you want those specific Criterion titles, then hey, you're correct. But I'm assuming MOST DVD collectors have many more titles in mind which are not on Criterion's list--even many Criterion DVD collectors.
We can debate cinematographic value of Criterions I suppose, but how do we do that when so many great movies have been released which have not been given the Criterion Treatment? In my opinion, attaining cinematographic value and a good price, are the goal. Not just one of those. But both of those criteria. Also, I'd even say the Criterion sale was for a special group of collectors within a group of collectors. This Amazon deal is for just about everyone who wants to fill their DVD collections, but also want enough money left over for food, the car payment, and rent. P.S. Thirteenth Floor is the Fullscreen Version. |

It wouldn't surprise me if as many as 20% of those titles are full screen only that used to contain an anamorphic side also. |

This really is a mediocre selection of movies here. I'd like to get Cliffhanger, but I'm struggling to find two more. Maybe The Tingler for one of them. Anyone got any recommendations? If anyone is looking for another title, I'll toss The First Men in the Moon out there. It's not a bad movie, and it's got effects by Ray Harryhausen. There's actually a few special features on the disc even. |
Night of the Living Dead remake would be a great choice for anyone who doesn't have it yet.

Just a side-note to anyone who wonders: the discount shows up on the checkout confirmation page.

Thanks OP for posting about this deal. |
If anyone is looking for a filler title, I highly recommend Used Cars. One of my favorite comedies ever!

I was not deifying the Criterion Collection. Sure, there are great titles there which I'm happy to see on DVD instead of on my old VHS tapes. The box, comments, and generally add-ons are nice, but I'm still interested in the value of the presentation. Anyway, I'm generally not even looking at about half of the collection's titles. What was great about this Criterion sale was that you could buy titles at low price but at a high quality. Generally Criterion quality is higher than of the cheaper, barebone DVDs. And since I'm not planning a Blu-ray player purchase too soon, taking this opportunity to complete the collection (let's face it, it wasn't about saving money, it was only about getting more value for the same money) fit the bill for me. PS: I do not completely agree with your value+price view. If I really want a title, I will go for it no matter what. But yes, it's so sweet to have it cheaper... |
Thanks for posting this.
$30 even for these: The Lords of Flatbush Thunderheart I Love You to Death Places in the Heart Peggy Sue Got Married Cliffhanger Wolf Just One of the Guys Who's Harry Crumb? |
Does anyone know how long this 3 for $10 sale will last? It'll probably be dead by the time I get home from work Wednesday tonight. Unfortunately I didn't see this when I checked earlier yesterday afternoon, and now I've got to go to work so I don't have enough time to read reviews of these DVDs to order this morning.
I already have many of them, and the majority of the ones I don't have are probably either pan & scan or single-layer discs. That's part of why they are so cheap. I assume once Amazon runs out of stock, the items will disappear? |
