starman9000 08-05-08 08:12 PM

Is there any easy way to tell which of these are actually still Widescreen, and not fullscreen only (like Still Crazy)?

Jacoby Ellsbury 08-05-08 08:12 PM

Just one of the guys!!!!!!!

Terry loves tits and ass

Mountain Biker 08-05-08 08:12 PM

Sweet Deal!!

CritterYawn 08-05-08 08:32 PM

I guess it's a good deal as far as the entertainment value is of concern, but in terms of cinematographic value, the recent DeepDiscount Criterion Collection deal will take years to beat.

DVD Polizei 08-05-08 08:47 PM

If you want those specific Criterion titles, then hey, you're correct. But I'm assuming MOST DVD collectors have many more titles in mind which are not on Criterion's list--even many Criterion DVD collectors.

We can debate cinematographic value of Criterions I suppose, but how do we do that when so many great movies have been released which have not been given the Criterion Treatment?

In my opinion, attaining cinematographic value and a good price, are the goal. Not just one of those. But both of those criteria.

Also, I'd even say the Criterion sale was for a special group of collectors within a group of collectors. This Amazon deal is for just about everyone who wants to fill their DVD collections, but also want enough money left over for food, the car payment, and rent.

P.S.

Thirteenth Floor is the Fullscreen Version.

I don't think so ... the UPCs are the same :( You have to look at the actual back cover to see if it lists both full screen and widescreen (at least Still Crazy and Sheena are like this).

Several of these CTHE/Sony are fairly impossible to buy online since you never know what you will get. I would operate on the assumption that anything that has been reported as being silently re-released under the same UPC will be the most recent one (meaning likely to be missing the anamorphic side). Amazon does list 1.33:1 for a lot of those.

It wouldn't surprise me if as many as 20% of those titles are full screen only that used to contain an anamorphic side also.

Idle Hands has gone full screen only, unfortunately.

This really is a mediocre selection of movies here. I'd like to get Cliffhanger, but I'm struggling to find two more. Maybe The Tingler for one of them. Anyone got any recommendations?

If anyone is looking for another title, I'll toss The First Men in the Moon out there. It's not a bad movie, and it's got effects by Ray Harryhausen. There's actually a few special features on the disc even.

alfonsosoriano 08-05-08 10:42 PM

Night of the Living Dead remake would be a great choice for anyone who doesn't have it yet.

Good call, so long as the pre-discount total is over 25$ you get the free shipping.

I got Barabbas, Hudson Hawk, and First Men in the Moon(thanks smash). (all guilty pleasures)

Thanks to everyone who responded about the OAR issue.

TimTucker 08-05-08 11:05 PM

Just a side-note to anyone who wonders: the discount shows up on the checkout confirmation page.

runner001 08-05-08 11:54 PM

great opportunity to use the FREE $10 coupon when signing up for the Amazon Prime membership, but I can't find anything I like.

KLZ 08-06-08 12:18 AM

Thanks, I picked up 3.. I had to throw in a filler item cause I was just below $25.

I had about 5 I wanted, so I added this for the 6th one. Gotta stock up on some titles to use for the Horror Movie Challenge in October.

Thanks OP for posting about this deal.

Sweet Baby James 08-06-08 12:52 AM

If anyone is looking for a filler title, I highly recommend Used Cars. One of my favorite comedies ever!

Maybe, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find anything of interest in this Amazon sale, although I'm usually buying quite a few DVDs from there.

I was not deifying the Criterion Collection. Sure, there are great titles there which I'm happy to see on DVD instead of on my old VHS tapes. The box, comments, and generally add-ons are nice, but I'm still interested in the value of the presentation. Anyway, I'm generally not even looking at about half of the collection's titles.

What was great about this Criterion sale was that you could buy titles at low price but at a high quality. Generally Criterion quality is higher than of the cheaper, barebone DVDs. And since I'm not planning a Blu-ray player purchase too soon, taking this opportunity to complete the collection (let's face it, it wasn't about saving money, it was only about getting more value for the same money) fit the bill for me.

PS: I do not completely agree with your value+price view. If I really want a title, I will go for it no matter what. But yes, it's so sweet to have it cheaper...

terminator911 08-06-08 01:29 AM

Thanks for posting this.

$30 even for these:
The Lords of Flatbush
Thunderheart
I Love You to Death
Places in the Heart
Peggy Sue Got Married
Cliffhanger
Wolf
Just One of the Guys
Who's Harry Crumb?

Manzana 08-06-08 07:14 AM

Does anyone know how long this 3 for $10 sale will last? It'll probably be dead by the time I get home from work Wednesday tonight. Unfortunately I didn't see this when I checked earlier yesterday afternoon, and now I've got to go to work so I don't have enough time to read reviews of these DVDs to order this morning.

I already have many of them, and the majority of the ones I don't have are probably either pan & scan or single-layer discs. That's part of why they are so cheap. I assume once Amazon runs out of stock, the items will disappear?
