^Yep Spike has said Ace in the Hole is one of his favorite films (The Deer Hunter is another of his favorites.)
Spike also appears on the Battle of Algiers set.

ALso like to point out that 6 of the 8 $40 Criterion's I ordered yesterday have shipped and 3 of the 4 $30 Criterion's I ordered shipped today as well. Hopefully I'll get them by the end of the month.

Wow just noticed La Haine isnt even listed there ... thats weird.

I'm buying 2 sets one for 32 dollars and one for 24.... the 24 I'm getting Vanishing and Blast of Silence of Shock Corridor (after hearing them here looked both up on IMDB and both seem very good) ... so tough to decide lol. Maybe even Ivans Childhood?

I was really thinking of adding Rififi to Vanishing, I heard from many its good how good is it?

I just went ahead and bought Vanishing and Rififi ...

my first two criterions ever

La Haine is listed under its English translation (Hate).

I did not like Rififi and I never blind-buy Criterions anyway, but I'm sure you won't encounter another person here at CriterionTalk, I mean DVDTalk, who didn't like this movie... If you saw and liked The Asphalt Jungle or Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, then you should look into it. It's a more influential than quality heist film, I would say.

Anyway, I watched Videodrome, The Killers ('46), and The Wages of Fear all today. I did not like Videodrome, thought The Killers was a rather average noir, but I loved The Wages of Fear and I'll be considering buying that CC.

Yes, Wages of Fear was quite outstanding. I'm considering of buying that as well or La Haine. I'm new to Criterions but already want so much.

For me, titles being out of stock at DD are not a big deal. It's not like I don't have anything to watch and they don't charge my credit card until the discs ship. I don't think I've ever waited more than a month for a title.

I'm thinking about getting Touchez Pas Au Grisbi instead of Rififi now. Vanishing is staying for sure, but I was just about to place the order when I cant decide now between these two.

Honestly, Rififi is a fantastic film. I would consider it highly unlikely that you'd have the reaction that wilky did. One of my favorites in the collection. (...for what it's worth.)

Do not second guess Rififi. Touchez pas au grisbi is good, but it is not even the best Becker film in the Collection. That would be Le trou. Rififi is a landmark and it has been subject to a significant revival in the last ten years. I believe Truffaut hailed it as the greatest film noir ever made.

Just for kicks, I decided to put every title available in the sale in my cart just to see what the final total would be.

200 titles for $3772.55! I think I got all the duplicates out (single titles that are available in a boxset), but I'm not sure.

Thanks for your suggestions, folks.
I went ahead and ordered Thief of Bagdad and Drunken Angel for my first-evern purchase of Criterions.
I checked with my local library and both Army of Shadows and another possible choice I had, Toyko Story, are available, so I'm on the waiting list for those.
I can pick up The Third Man at my local Borders with the 30% coupon and a gift card I still have, so it will bring down that price to about $10 w/tax.
I'm still looking into a purchase of two $24.xx titles. It's a choice between 400 Blows, Mafioso, Classe Tous Risques or Band of Outsiders. Which two of those would you pick?

What is the chance if High and Low, scheduled to be released next week (?), will be added to this sale?

I'd pick 400 Blows, a landmark in the French New Wave, and Band of Outsiders, which is Godard at his most playful and accessible. Others might disagree, but to me that is a good thing.

I would have to agree. The 400 Blows is outstanding and the single disc version contains some very worthwhile extras. I have seen every film in the Criterion Collection at least once, but I revisit the 400 Blows, Contempt, Orpheus, 8 1/2, Videodrome, Pickpocket, Rules of the Game, and Au hasard Balthazar more than any of the other films in the collection. Band of Outsiders is a fun film. I prefer Contempt and Pierrot le fou, but I highly recommend all early Godard. Mafioso and Classe tous risques are decent but they are simply not as engaging or significant as the other two.

Here are a few reviews for the 400 Blows: http://beta.mrqe.com/movies/m100002091

Order #1:
Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara
Ingmar Bergman Trilogy

Order #2:
Leopard
Spartacus

Order #3:
La Strada
Story of Floating Weeds
39 Steps
Carnival of Souls
Haxan
Knife in the Water
Diary of a Country Priest
King of Kings

Order #4:
Cria Cuervos
La Haine
House of Games
If...
Playtime
This Sporting Life

Order #5:
Burmese Harp
Clean, Shaven
Fires on the Plain
Viridiana

Order #6:
Blast of Silence
Hidden Fortress
Man Bites Dog
Rififi

And that just about clears out most of my Criterion wishlist. Excellent, excellent sale although just about everything (with the exception of 1 or 2 items) was already OOS. The Dreyer set is really tempting, but I have no idea what to pair it with...

Postwar Kurosawa? It's pretty close in price, at $56.66.
EDIT: Never mind, looks like you already own it. How about the Monsters and Madmen set? None of the films are Oscar worthy, but all are a lot of fun and the set itself is very nice.

Can anyone give me their opinions about:

Tokyo Story
Silent Ozu: 3 Family Comedies

I am a big fan of Kurosawa and I'm picking up Drunken Angel and Ikiru.

For what it's worth, I received this rather garbled email from DVD Planet today, in response to a query about mirroring DD's sale:

"We are very sorry to inform you that we do not have any information regarding Free Criterion sale on DVDPlanet. If there is any sale we will mention it on our webiste(sic). We request you to check our website frequently. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you."

Damn straight it's an inconvenience!

Any speculation why Fiend without a Face (and others) are not a part of this sale? Fiend seems particularly odd not to be included since it's been out for so many years - seems like a great candidate for shelf-clearing. --Peter

I tried placing an order, but the site keeps saying that the code isn't valid. Anyone have any suggestions?

Make sure that there is no whitespace(blanks) on either side of the code.
