Poker Industries 50% Off Sale

Poker Industries is having a blowout sale - 50% off everything. It's all going fast; it seemed like the Subversive Cinema titles went OOS as I was writing this. Their Shaw Brothers selection is down to nearly nothing as far as action titles go, but if you want to explore other genres, they still have the 3-disc limited edition of The Love Eterne for only $12.49. Scads of lesser-known HK titles are listed at $9.99, which means they're only $4.99 after the coupon.

"For a very limited time only enter <B>LUCKY13</B> in the coupon field during checkout to receive 50% off of every item in your shopping cart. Please make sure to update the page to apply the coupon once it is entered, prior to completing your order.
Coupon is good on every item currently in stock and can be used as many times as you like until promotion ends. It cannot be used retroactively. Any items that are not in stock or have sold out will be canceled. There will be no back orders.
We have also lowered our prices on all of our <A HREF=http://www.pokerindustries.com/poker.store?page=browse&browse=distributor&distributorID=59 class="news_link_black"><B>Celestial Pictures Shaw Brothers</B></A> releases. Most <B>DVD</B> titles are only <B>$9.99</B>. Most <B>VCD</B> titles are only <B>$4.99</B> [while supplies last].
The prices on all <A HREF=http://www.pokerindustries.com/poker.store?page=browse&browse=distributor&distributorID=368 class="news_link_black"><B>Pathfinder Pictures</B></A> releases have been reduced. All <A HREF=http://www.pokerindustries.com/poker.store?page=browse&browse=distributor&distributorID=281 class="news_link_black"><B>TLA Releasing</B></A> titles are also priced to move."

So I guess the "very limited time" part wasn't exactly honest?

What's shipping like?

Their shipping is free on orders over $100 based on list prices rather than discounted prices (which was pretty cool), but you might have a difficult time putting together a $100 order by now. This sale has been going on for more than the "months" mentioned above. It started nearly two years ago, possibly earlier, as a 30% off everything sale, then up to 40% off, and finally to 50% off in early 2007. They didn't really promote it much except via emails to previous online customers, which meant you were more likely to see a link at a Hong Kong and/or cult film related forum than here, and it drained my bank account rather quickly (it was also an excellent way to get tonnes of cool Hong Kong VCDs of films that will never show up on DVD). I'm kinda surprised the website is still running, actually. Most of the titles have been out-of-stock since the 30% off sale. Leaving the listings up is almost like a tease . . .

I've long wondered if they just wanted to get out of the import/niche DVD business before the dawn of downloading, or if their customers had simply gotten their fill thanks to the DVD age and parallel importing.

I believe the Poker store was part of, or connected to, a comic book store in New Jersey (the name escapes me at the moment). The boxes they shipped often had the name of that store rather than Poker on them, so maybe they just shifted their interest to comics? Their regular DVD prices were, probably necessarily, a bit high. Hong Kong DVDs and VCDs could usually be found much cheaper from retailers in Hong Kong or in big city Chinatowns (if you had one nearby), and even though overseas shipping was higher, the total cost was often less.

Poker used to do an annual 20% sale like DD, and that's usually when I would buy from them. The 30% sales, and their increasing frequency, were probably an early indication of things to come. Of course, I still haven't watched stuff I bought from them in 2006! :) They were good folks to deal with by phone as well.
