The Sony single-disc of 20 Million Miles to Earth showed up at the Winston-Salem Big Lots on University Parkway - they had about 10 or 15 copies.

The Big Lots just north of Beckley, WV had two or three of the Woody Allen box sets (the collection with Zelig). They also had a pretty good selection of the older, classic titles.

Anyone pick up the Little Women set? Is it anamorphic?

I mentioned previously that I bought for $3.00 the "Hopalong Cassidy 5 classic Feature Film Westerns". I was worried that the cover of the DVD made me think the DVD would be junk transfers. But, I saw good reviews on Amazon so I went ahead and bought it. Anyway, I watched the first of the five films and, overall, the transfer is indeed GREAT. For Western fans wanting their good 'ol western fix, this is great stuff. For those interested, here is the link to Amazon for reference for the DVD- http://www.amazon.com/Hopalong-Cassi...9813147&sr=1-2
Edit to add- the pic of the front cover of the DVD looks decent, on Amazon but when you see the cover in person...it looks cheapie but the transfer is beautiful.

I'm looking right at it, and it's not mentioned. Can you explain where it says that?

Is there any duplication of the titles released in the 12-disc Infinity/Falcon "Complete Television Collection?" I know some Hoppy films were included as a bonus. This set also carries a 2007 copyright by U.S. Television Office, Inc.

Comparing the reviews on Amazon for the 12 disc set, no movies on the disc I bought at Big Lots are duplicated in the 12 disc set. The movies on the Hopalong Cassidy DVD I bought at Big Lots are- Border Patrol(1943)/Doomed Caravan(1941)/Fool's Gold 1947/Forty Thieves 1944/Hidden Gold 1940. The movie I have watched so far, Border Patrol, was excellent(!) and I've become a Hoppy fan. Now, I have to do some research to see what other Hoppy DVD's I want to buy going forward!

DeepSleep 08-27-08 02:44 PM

Went to another Biglots and they had the full range of boxsets on the 4 sided goldtone wire rack.

They had the Woody Allen Collections 2 and 3, Sabata (western), Michael Moore, Hannibal and Species collections.

thursdaynighter 08-27-08 06:22 PM

Finally found the boxsets I was looking for at a Big Lots in Sacramento (Northgate Blvd). Picked up both Allen sets, Sabata (blind buy), Fox in a Box, Hollow Man (2 disc Superbit), Lords of Dogtown (OTV), Fall of the House of Usher. I need a second job with all these Big Lots deals!

whilst it states only WIDESCREEN on the back cover - if you try researching reviews on this title - ie http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3 - you'll read that it is anamorphic. Just laziness on behalf of SONY.

basaro 08-27-08 10:41 PM

^Thank you!

I opened the boxset, and can confirm that the actual dvd package back is labeled correctly, so it's just the box that is wrong. I popped it in and it's anamorphic. :)

The Valeyard 08-27-08 10:56 PM

Went back to the Big Lots in West Covina and they rolled out the box sets. They had 4 each of the Woody Allen Collections (2 & 3), 3 Fox in a Boxes, 6 Thunderbirds and 3 Species. No Moore or Hannibals to be found.

I picked up a Species & Fox set.

With this report that boxsets have appeared 100 miles north of me, I again ventured to my local BL. Still nothing new.
But everytime I go, I feel obligated to get something for the collection. It's getting tougher and tougher as I've pretty much got everything I might have a glimmer of interest in. This round I scraped up:
Hound of the Baskervilles (Dudley Moore, Peter Cook)
Hi, Mom! Robert De Niro / Brian De Palma)

gfoots 08-28-08 12:25 AM

Found a few new titles from Echo Bridge Home Entertainment including

The Big White
The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire
Gleason
Bailey's Billion$
Blackbeard
The Funeral

There may have been others that I can't remember. I'm not sure if any of these are actually worth $3.00.

MooMooMooMoo 08-28-08 12:48 AM

Hit 2 Big Lots today. The first, which is one of the 3 in the city I live in got a single tier display of the Sony/MGM batch. They had the worst selection I've ever seen at a BL of a new large batch. Nothing even remotely worth mentioning.

I also went to the BL in Burien, Wa; which I rarely get to because of the distance. I was in a hurry & only was able to take a quick look; I wish I would have given myself an hour to tear their 3 tier display apart! They had the Species & Rocky boxes (no Woody Allen's though; & a manager told me they did not receive any). In my very quick stop, I saw 3 titles I hadn't seen at other BL's: Girl Interrupted, All I Want & Ring Of Bright Water.

I strongly suspect there was more of interest, but I didn't have the time to dig through them (grr). I bought all their Species boxes, but I did leave the Rocky.

Totally worth it. I'll be on the lookout for this one. :D

Keep an eye out for "Greetings", the predecessor film with the same De Niro character. I found an Echo Bridge copy of this at BL earlier this year. Music in both films by Eric Kaz. Both are required viewing for De Palma fans and those who think his career's been just as a Hitchcock-wannabe.

Transfer wise, the ones I've bought do look excellent. When you first play them, the "Platinum Disc Corp" logo comes up. Keep an eye out for Echo Bridge "Ghost Stories 8 episodes as seen on Fox Family channel". I haven't watched it yet but I did a "quality" check and it looks cool, especially for just $3.00. I've seen 2 different covers for the Gleason one and one of the two looks much better(the one with the full pose figure in B/W of Brad Garrett as Gleason looks bestl).
Edit to add- to be more clear, when the DVD first loads the Platinum logo comes up. But, not when the actual movie is playing...

moklerman 08-28-08 11:08 AM

Diskyler, I'm south of you in Bakersfield and there's only been a smattering of box sets here. I've seen Species in store and someone I know bought Species and Rocky and he said they were the only copies when he was there. Oh, and Acupulco Heat but I don't think anyone's really after that one.

I keep hoping they'll pop up but I've seen the new displays with all the restocks and still very little in terms of box sets. Unless they're being bought really fast.

lol. What movie is that supposed to be?? Oh Hollow Man. They always put these dramatic titles that are not even related to the original name. The titles always get lost in translation.

About Llittle Women I can also confirm the packaging is all wrong. I don't know what happened there, but whatever information is on the outside box does not match to the information on the back of the DVD.

They don't even bring that crap to South Florida anymore. Thank God.

Bigsierra 08-28-08 04:29 PM

Doesn't that say "The Man Without Skin" in elspanol?
