You could try to prime the pump and add your email address to the Be In The Know box of the bottom of the webpage -- sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Looks like I'm out for CC at B&N - I bought $225 in giftcards and was about to get started down the stack when a manager came over and said it's only one coupon per customer per day. No splitting orders (anymore), no allowing one each of individual coupons (anymore), no repeats on generic coupons (anymore), and - worst yet - no coupons at all on 50% off items.

So my pile of twenty became a prospective purchase of one, and when the computer threw out my $8 off $40 for a $39.99 rrp (which is always chancey, but a) worked everybother time in the last three years and b) was okayed by customer service by phone) for BOTH, so they said, being not $40 initially and needing to still be $40+ after discounts... even that was no longer the deal it should have been.

So I left with $225 in giftcards, and already wish I'd had them refunded. :(

I guess that may also be it for me buying Criterion (unless Amazon has excellent deals) and anything at B&N, if their coupon policy is now so draconian that nothing is cheaper than almost-everywhere-else. That's a depressing pair of thoughts.

The BF coupon (if it materialises) will only be usable on ONE ITEM, however - unless you get really lucky - I nearly got ejected last year for trying to buy more than one thing, and even though I could show e-mails that said BN had sent me 16 e-mails (and quoted customer service as saying 16 e-mails allows sixteen coupons), they were very firm.

The whole website is a shambles for me - it won't search properly or find things accurately all the time even if I filter the category. And if I don't filter the category and type in the full title, "criterion", format and director... it lists twenty books with passingly similar words in the title. Crazy.

Seriously. I can't believe anyone ever accepted those 8/40 coupons during these sales. Even if you're under the notion that the coupon refers to the pre-sale price, standard Criterion releases are not nor have they ever been $40. If I was BN, I would fire any cashier that accepted them.

So, yes, it's a bit sneaky. But it has also historically been on the 'allowed' side of bargain-hunting; now it's being treated as "coupon abuse" without any apparent change in terminology, wording or scope. Just that wise coupon use yielding big discounts is naturally disliked. Which would be relatively fine if they'd change the wording or something like that.

Also, while the individual 'one use' coupons are a bit hazy anyway, there should be no problem presenting ten unique 15% coupons for ten items; today I was told there would be.

The range/shelves add a few new titles, but rarely seem to change beyond that... which is all very anecdotal, but if there are only a few sales in total, perhaps it's drastically more important to maximize profit on the sales they get?

Also, many shops STILL fall into to fallacy that dissuading coupon use wil translate to greater full-price sales and profits. (And yet they still issue coupons and hold sales...)
