Found the display in a high-traffic aisle (but far from the DVD section) in the Manteca, CA store. All the prices were clearly marked on the cardboard shelves.

Also purchased Vanishing Point (not a blind buy for me, as I saw this as a kid in a theater double-billed with Escape from the Planet of the Apes).

I checked several stores and no one was carrying The Grude or Hang 'Em High.

Watched Vanishing Point last night. I did not see what the big deal was. Anyone planning to blind buy it based on the hype from Death Proof, keep your expectations to a minimum.

i can recommend this movie highly...especially fans of easy rider. then again, i bought it before i had even heard of death proof so i might not have had as high of expectations as the above poster.

I've seen Hang 'Em High in the dump bin numerous times.

Look in the 2/$5 cabinet(s), aka Dump Bin, for these titles. They've been there for several months in this area.

I think my biggest gripe was the shortage of actual car chases. Its mostly him just driving, meeting all different sorts of different people along the way. Kind of reminded me of Cold Mountain in that respect.

I'd say the total screen time of someone actually pursuing him was maybe 10-15 minutes.

^Not all of them are $4.88 as several of us have discovered/posted. Prices are $4.88-$7.50 depending on the title. And it may be a YMMV as when I attempted to get them to price adjust what I had from $7.50 to the $4.88 I had paid the previous day for a couple of titles electronics told the checker they were all $7.50. I've not bothered to check again and see if that's what's been done.

I was at the one WM near me that had the display and was able to verify that prices are a spread from $4.88 - $9.96. Roughly 1/2 were $4.88. Most of the others were $7.50 with the other prices posted being on 1-3 titles each. They were all marked today with the price below the title on the cardboard display. I scanned the few I picked up anyway just to be sure.

Thanks, guys, for not blaming me. This has been one of the screwiest, least "uniformly priced" Walmart sales I've ever seen.

The same thing (well almost the same) happened here.

After I found the unpriced display at the Indian Trail, NC Walmart which I reported in my original post on May 28, my brother found another Father's Day display at the Wilkinson Blvd. super store in Charlotte, NC this past Monday.

Everything in the display was priced at $5.00, with $5.00 signs on the shelves of the display and on top of it!

My brother remembered that the copy of the 2-disc The Sand Pebbles had scanned at $14.44 at Indian Trail so he bought a copy for me (for $5.00!).

I stopped by the Wilkinson Blvd. store again today (Saturday) on the way back from Gastonia and found that the DVDs were no longer $5.00 each but had individual prices on each shelf in the display!

The Eastway Drive store also got a display in this week. All the DVDs were individually stickered with the variety of prices which have been noted here.

Here's how the pricing has finally shaken up in our area on some of the titles I remember:

Priced at $4.88: The Bravados, Broken Lance, Buffalo Bill, Crash Dive, Forty Guns, The Man With One Red Shoe, 100 Rifles, The Ox-Bow Incident, The Proud Ones, Tony Rome, Vanishing Point (original 1971 film), Von Ryan's Express (single-disc edition), Warlock, Wing And A Prayer, Yellow Sky (I still highly recommend this off-beat 1948 Gregory Peck b&w western - great transfer and the DVD has a poster gallery, production stills gallery, and behind-the-scenes photo gallery)

Priced at $5.00: Broken Arrow (Christian Slater, John Travolta) (and a bunch of other action movies I can't remember)

Priced at $6.88: Broken Arrow (James Stewart), Speed, Speed 2

Priced at $7.50: Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (2004 1-disc "Special Edition"), The Comancheros, Morituri, My Darling Clementine, North To Alaska, Sink The Bismarck, Tora! Tora! Tora! (2001 1-disc "Special Edition"), The Undefeated

Priced at $9.44: To The Shores Of Tripoli (since this is just below list price for this title (only a $1.50 below DVDEmpire!) this price makes absolutely no sense - I bought this very same movie from the 2006 Walmart Father's Day display for $3.88!!!)

Priced at $14.44: The Sand Pebbles (2-disc edition)

Alright... some good news on the Sand Pebbles front...

A very careful explanation of how I got that DVD for $5.

First, pick up the DVD. Make sure you don't have the last copy of the DVD and make sure the DVD display reads "$5.00."
Second, use one of their scanners in the middle of the store to confirm they haven't fixed the problem yet.
Third, go back to the front of the store and find the most competent looking employee. They are usually pretty easy to spot because they frown less. A surefire bet is the customer service person who stands at the little podium thing near the registers waiting for people to call them. Not all Wal Marts have the podium so you may have to use a little extra effort to find this person. IF you cannot find anyone who fits this, find the register closest to the display.
Fourth, explain to the cashier/customer service manager before they ring the DVD up that the sign says it's $5 but "I scanned it and it came up $14.44." Their natural reaction will be that it wasn't supposed to be placed there. This is what happened to me. But since you're standing so close to the display, you can very easily point out that it IS in fact supposed to be there (Step 5).
Sixth, the cashier will call a manager who will probably say something about how the DVD wasn't supposed to be there. Then the manager will be shown the display, get bewildered by the mistake (not knowing its a national problem) and probably take the sign down. But not before telling your cashier to offer it for the original $5.

This is pretty much exactly how my trip went (in an Atlanta store off of I-75).

Apparently, the Walmart people have the same customer service rules as all of the other stores they're just 10x more sensitive to being conned by idiots who can't read signs. As someone who spent 5 years working in a grocery store, I can completely understand their feelings and imagine they're multiplied by 100 compared to the crap I dealt with.

But basically if you are civil and logical, they will probably give you the discount. I would recommend grabbing every single title you want to see discounted. Don't plan on going back to the display to get more via this process again. That would be pushing your luck. Also, admittedly, my case could simply be attributed to an especially good customer service manager and is not necessarily the norm. Also, if your display isn't clearly marked as $5 (or $4.88) the entire previous method is negated.

Last but not least, I have not been back to the store to see what they did to change the display or the prices of the items. I do intend to check that out eventually.

Feel free to ask more questions as necessary.

They are ultra-suspicious of anyone these days--usually. Your steps are pretty accurate. I tend to wait until it rings up "incorrectly" though.

My Walmart changed the price sign from $5 all the way up to $9.44 on the display.

Looks like most are simply ignoring the display now.

I grabbed one of the Taxi Drivers for $6 from the Parkesburg, PA store. They still had one left, but most of the section was picked clean.
