LOTR Limited Edition 3-Pack $19.96 Wal-Mart YMMV

My local Wal-Mart just replaced their display of Christmas movies with a section of various box sets (some actor specific, some series specific). There were quite a few, but the one that jumped out at me was the Lord of the Rings Limited Edition set (the sets containing both the theatrical and the extended versions) for $19.96. I didn't get a chance to check out the display in detail, so I don't really remember the prices on the others.

strawberryshortcake 12-26-07 08:42 PM

Is the price for ALL three ($19.99 total) or each ($19.99 x 3) ?

Probably pointless for me to ask anyways since I already snagged all three (the 4 disc set) priced at $9.99 each down at Circuit City (includes Golden Compass Pass--and despite what critics say, I enjoyed the film, actually even more so than I Am Legend).

peateargryphon 12-26-07 08:46 PM

This price is for all three movies.

Imail724 12-26-07 09:22 PM

Did it look like this? I may have to pick this up, I have the three extended editions but I don't think I'll ever watch them, too long, big mistake buying them.

I have both versions and never watch either, so ...

Yes, that is the set they are selling.

walmart.com shows ~$60 :( ---- i need to head over to the local wally to do an exchange tomorrow anyhow... ill scope it out

Moleman1138 12-27-07 05:14 PM

It is 20 bucks for all 3 films (flipper 1st disc) I just went there today and they canned the christmas films for the box sets.

I just picked this up at my local WM store. I already have the three big extended sets, and thought about picking these up in the past, but for only $20 I had to finally pick these up. Thanks to the OP!

Is everything ported over from the original releases? Our second disc of Return of the King got damaged, and I've wanted to replace it.

DVD Polizei 12-29-07 07:30 PM

It's just the movies.

bigjim25 12-29-07 07:56 PM

I can confirm these are out at mine. They also had X-Men Trilogy and about 10 or 15 others.

For each of the three movies, it's the regular and extended versions of the movie on a flipper (using seamless branching) without DTS. A "Candid Camera"-style video diary is on the second disc for each. None of the extras from the other versions are repeated, and these extras are not found in either of the other versions. Here are the reviews from this site:

Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
Return of the King

In August 2007, I was lucky enough to notice that Circuit City had all three four-disc versions for $8.99 each (i.e the Platinum Series Special Extended Edition for $26.97).

Maybe wait a few months to see if they offer the three movies again at that price?

It's too bad these sales can't last longer so more people can take advantage of them, though I've seen some of them for under $13 new - if you search around.

I guess it depends on whether you prefer seeing the extras or the original theatrical release.

What other sets did Walmart have on sale in that display?

The best way to view the extended versions is to watch one disc at a time, splitting the film over two nights. The breaks are in logical spots, so it's like watching six two-hour movies and not three four-hour ones. Try it that way.

However, the supplemental materials on the other two discs in each EE are simply the best batch of features I've ever seen*. I bought the various production diary and three-disc versions of King Kong just for the extras, since the movie itself was a big, honking, self-indulgent wankfest by Jackson.

I haven't watched all the extras from the new Blade Runner yet, but it'll be hard to top the 18 hours or so of goodies on the LOTR EEs.

Why is WalMart getting all this crap from Target, they had the 3 Disc WTC too?

TheMovieman 12-30-07 08:35 PM

Picked up LOTR at the W11 store in Eugene. The one closest to me was sold out.

Also went ahead and got the Audrey Hepburn Collection for $19.96 as well.

i got one of the LOTR, and i also saw the tnmt 5 pack there for 19.96 also

Gonna ask a stupid question...

What's on the "Die Hard" set? Is it just the movies or it's it the former two disc SE for each film - as in double sided discs for each flick?

Now a normal Q.

I would like to pick up the LOTR set, the newer extra sound interesting. But what has disappointed me was that none of the advertising was part of the individual box sets; no trailers or teasers. Does this re-re-release have them? Trivial since my store has sold out.

Oh yeah, there is another set for the same price. A three-pack of the "Austin Powers" films.

red5bv06 01-02-08 10:46 PM

As far as I know, the Die hard set is just the movies. Very little information on the package.

As far as the LOTR movies, all they are are the "limited editions" which are the theatrical and extended versions of each film. The only extra is a documentary by Costa Botes on each film. I picked them up for 7.50 each with free tickets to Golden Compass back before Christmas.

@ Walmart?

shyguy1083 01-03-08 12:59 AM

^ I know they were $9 at Wal-Mart around Christmas time. Never saw them go for $7.50. But they did have the movie cash, so that was an added bonus.

peateargryphon 01-03-08 08:23 AM

FYI...They also have the "Too Cool for School" collection for $14.96 (Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful).
