Here is one of the best finds I have found in awhile. The complete 1980 filmation animated flash gordon series for only $5.99. Generally, I try to avoid ross stores like the plague, but I strolled into one today and found this as well as the 1986 filmation follow-up called defenders of the earth, which also is flash gordon but teams him up with other classic cartoon heroes the phantom and mandrake the magician. I picked up both box sets for $12 total plus tax, what a bargain! the stories are great and the animation, while not quite as good as some of what is produced today, is really good for early 80s animation, quality very on-par with the movie heavy metal.

I have been wanting to pick up the Defenders of the Earth sets since they are so cheap now, but I keep forgetting about Flash Gordon. Looks like it's only $10.99 on Amazon so I might have to get it some time as well.

Darn, I would have picked up Flash Gordon in a heartbeat. I heart the movie and think I would enjoy the 'toon. Figures that Ross is nowhere to be found in the midwest...

It still holds up very well (at least the first season). I loved that they maintained the "cliffhanger" nature of the old serials.

I was not even aware that the animated series was available on DVD til I noticed it at my brothers house last Thursday.
I remember something about it being cancelled because some uppity parents or religious"right" were upset about the scantily clad women in it?!
Anyway,I'll definitely have to keep an eye open for it.

My thanks also to the OP. I found the FG set and DOTE Vol. 1 as well as the three-disc Hellboy Director's Cut ($4.99!) and some season sets of Hercules for my sister-in-law. Got a decent chunk of Xmas shopping done in less than 30 minutes.

There was another thread about Ross' deals as well, so thanks to both OPs for spreading the word. I picked up the Hellboy set, which Walmart was nice enough to take off my hands for nearly $30. So that pretty much takes care of my Bourne collection on Tuesday.

I found Seasons 4 and 5 at the North Richland Hills store. At $9.99 for 9-disc season sets, I was tempted to get some for myself.

Just wanted to say thanks for the post. I have never been in a Ross store so I would have never thought to go in one for a dvd bargain.

They had one copy of Flash Gordon the Complete Series & one of copy of Defenders of the Earth the complete series volume 1!

I was very excited to get Flash Gordon as I watch the hell out of those when it was on TV when I was a kid. My 3 year old will love them and I get to rewatch them like my Superfriends dvds. A win-win!

I opened them up and they are really nice sets. Flash Gordon is a 4 disc set with a nice episode guide along with two art cards (postcard size) in a slipcase. If you want Flash Gordon, it looks like you may want to hunt it down as Amazon shows it only available used which usually means it has gone out of print. Looking at dvdpricesearch.com there were only a few etailers still carrying it.

The Defenders of the Earth Vol. 1 is a heavy 5 disc set that has its own episode guide in a nice evelope with 2 more art cards. I am guessing the remaininng two art cards are in Vol. 2.

There are quite a bit of extras on both box sets.

I didn't watch Defenders of the Earth as much as the Flash Gordon series when I was a kid but I am looking forward to checking it out now. I think Defenders came before the Flash Gordon series, correct?

So...has anyone seen Vol. 2 of Defenders of the Earth for cheap at Ross? Now I have to complete the collection.

Thanks for the update. I haven't seen season 5 in my parts(California) but at $9.99 I'm sure they don't hang around long. I never did see any of the Flinstones sets for $7.99. I just can't bring myself to go into Ross on a regular basis.

Went to Ross last night in Mira Mesa, CA after seeing a sneek preview of "I Am Legend", and could not find the Flash Gordon set. Does anyone know if they will restock this item, or is pretty much as supply lasts? Thanks!
