Toshiba HD-A2 $98 at Walmart on Friday YMMV

http://holiday.ri-walmart.com/?secti...e117144-lLink1

Starting this Friday at 8am (according to the ad above so I assume 11/2) the Toshiba HD-A2 is going to be on sale for $98.XX, but not available at all stores and limited to quantity on hand. I've never seen a HD or Blu player at my Walmart (my Sams has a Blu player for sale) so I'm not sure if they'll have it or not.

Dont know anything about the player, but at that price it's awful tempting. However, I really want a Blu player.

PS.. Hope this doesnt fall under the "Black Friday" type ad since I just stumbled across this at their webisite today .

Why is this listed as YMMV? It's a national promotion...

Apparently, YMMV as to whether they have fifty of them in stock or zero.

Hmm...I gotta work tomorrow at 9am, so I may just run by the local Wally World to see if there is any there. I highly doubt anyone will beat this price before Christmas.

To anyone who has it, is this particular player any good? At least worth 98$?

Thanks,
-Stephen

Won't do 1080p, but for that price, it's almost a no-brainer if you own a HD-TV set.

No, but if you have a 1080p set it will deinterlace the 1080i signal anyway. Same end result.

Plus this player qualifies for Toshiba's mail in promo for 5 free HD DVDs.

If you say the HDDVDs are worth $20 each, basically the player is free.

Somebody merge this thread and the other. They are pretty much identical.

I'm gonna call my Wally world and see if they will at least have them in stock tomorrow morning.

Agreed. No one's fault, really. They were posted at pretty much the exact same time -- this one beat me by 2 minutes or so.

Anyway, for people asking if this is worth $98, the overwhelming answer is YES. Not only do you get access to HD DVD, but it's also a pretty damn good upscaler for standard DVDs. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this machine, even at twice the price. The 5 free HD DVDs just makes it even more of a no-brainer.

This is currently the #1 selling DVD player over at Amazon. Thier page contains a lot of great details, along with a ~4.5/5 rating from 286 reviews:

Yes, yes, yes this player is worth $98. I picked it up from Amazon for $210 together with 3 HD-DVD's plus the 5 free from Toshiba during their summer deal (since reduced to about $190 using different price drops since then). It is well worth $200. And for the people that picked it up earlier in it's run for $300 or more, I'd say it's worth that also.

Although I am not ready to go about replacing my entire DVD collection, HD-DVD truly is a revelation. I was just watching the HD-DVD of the documentary Galapagos last night, and the picture is just so damn good. And the Toshiba HD-DVD players do a great job at upconverting SD-DVD's. I use mine with a Pioneer 60" 1080p plasma (the new Kuro), so my plasma deinterlaces the 1080i to 1080p. Haven't seen true 1080p to compare, but I doubt it could be much better.

So imho, for anyone on the fence who can actually grab one of these tomorrow, it's a no-brainer.

Still without an HD display, I'm emotionally invested with Blu-Ray. I'm not tempted by the low prices.
