2 for $22 at Borders--some (usually) expensive foreign...(partial list)

Here's a basic list, not including titles that are a comparable price day in day out at DD and the like, or titles that go on sale a lot (Sin City, Corpse Bride, Pulp Fiction SE)

There are actually probably 200 titles, but, again, most of them are about that price (or less) usually. These are the ones of extreme note (normally $19+ on DD, amazon, etc):

Bin-Jip (aka 3-Iron) (not a HUGE difference, is 14.xx at amazon and DD)
Belle Époque
Pane e Tulipani (aka Bread and Tulips)
La Cité des Enfants Perdus (aka The City of Lost Children) -- Jean-Pierre Jeunet film with Ron Perlman
Jing Ke Ci Qin Wang (aka The Emperor & the Assassin)
Atanarjuat (aka The Fast Runner)
Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini (aka The Garden of the Finzi-Continis) -- 1971 best foreign language oscar
Le Grand Bleu (aka The Big Blue) -- Luc Besson's first English film.
À la Folie... Pas Du Tout (aka He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not) -- Audrey Tatou (Amélie)
Kikujirô no Natsu (aka Kikujiro--what, not the Spring of Kiku...ok, yeah nevermind, I see why they didn't decide on a literal translation) -- Takeshi "Beat" Kitano
Nicholas & Alexandra
Nueve Reinas (aka Nine Queens)
Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (aka The Princess & the Warrior) -- a film from Tom Tykwer (director of Run Lola Run)
Wilde -- Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde, Orlando Bloom's debut

(City of God would be another foreign one included, but is a lesser deal)

Damn. That's quite the list. Princess and the Warrior and Nine Queens have jumped on my "next time at Borders" list. If I hadn't already snatched up Bin-Jip, I'd grab that one with something else as well.

www.bordersstores.com (as I'm sure you already know) is the site to check a specific store's inventory and, I believe, will also show you if a product is on sale or not. So, you should be able to find out if a specific title you're eyeing is a) in stock at your local Borders and, if so, b) whether it's on sale or not.

2 for 22 deals are not considered a sale price. It's sort of a pseudo-glitch in the charts we get for sale pricing. These items are listed with a sale price of "N/A" because it's not a *price*--so I don't think our site will list it. EDIT: it doesn't. I didn't think so.

And for the record, this is not YMMV. They may sell out, or may accidentally not be sent a title or two, but these should go to all stores. The charts I copied the titles from are sent to ALL stores (but again, subject to availability--but as you established, you should get a ROUGH idea from that site!)

And sorry--no online, chris. Check if someone on here might pick em up for you!

Also, this deal is not like Circuit City. Single titles are regular price. You *NEED* to get 2 to get the $22 total.

It should also be noted:
There is no guarantee on how long this will last.

It should last through Monday at the least, possibly longer, but they occasionally pull the more valuable titles out quicker. I'd advise getting them this week if you plan on getting them.

I went to my local Borders tonight and they had maybe 2-3 dozen titles marked "2 for $22". None of the titles on the list were marked.

Will a Borders employee be able to tell me if a certain movie qualifies or not? I don't want to run into a "If it's not marked on sale it isn't..." sort of thing.

I've been waiting on some kind of deal on "He Loves Me , He Loves Me Not" for quite a while now.

It should be noted that these being the more obscure titles from the list, they are some of the most likely not to have been stickered, but this deal goes through in the computer, so there should be no issues with unstickered titles not being on sale. Also, there are a few titles I didn't get onto the table myself. Admittedly mostly the exercise ones (Biggest Loser Workout V1 & 2, etc)...but someone else might also think the foreign stuff wasn't worth the trouble to dig out.
Also, often some employees just put the stuff they send *specifically for* the displays out, without checking for the other titles listed to see if they're on the shelves and can be stickered and placed on the table.

They also don't expect much of titles like these, so they tend not to send a whole awful lot. We got only 2 copies of a number of these--if that. Belle Époque, for instance, we have one copy of, The Big Blue we have two copies of...and so on.

If you aren't sure, they can check if a movie qualifies from the same charts I used to type this (OK, actually, I arranged it by original list price for the list I used, once I noticed some titles normally 19-25.99 were on it, then just printed those higher priced ones). Generally I know my staff'd prefer not to just be asked about random movies though, as that's really quite time consuming to check through, considering the sheer volume.

FWIW, I recognize most of the posted titles as DVDs that have been available used at Hollywood Video for substantially less (that's where I purchased them over the last few years). Being obscure, they are usually in pristine condition.

Is the City of Lost Children the SE or original issue?

I went into a Borders yesterday, actually, to see about buying Monster Squad with a 30% off coupon. The online inventory check said it was instock. When I got to the store, the computer check said "Likely Instore". When did this become a status? It WASN'T on the shelf, and an employee who didn't bother looking said, "yeah, we can order it for you." After I went home empty handed, I checked online again, and it still said "instore" or "available", but not "likely instore". Anyway, I was pissed.

Realtime inventory updates for online websites are almost impossible. That's why it says "likely instore"
They probably got 1-2 copies of MS, because apparently NO ONE realized how popular this film was (except perhaps Lion's Gate themselves) and EVERY store (meaning all chains period) under-ordered--seems to be selling out EVERYWHERE, and most stores, even BBs and the like, only got 4 copies max.

-->And it's the SE of City of Lost Children.

Yes! Those can be used on anything short of gift cards.

"Yes" is the term I was looking for that is used on the online inventory search, and it still says it today. Maybe someone just hid it in the store. I just thought that maybe the instore search computers were more accurate since they were using different terminology like "likely instore". Anyway, thanks for the info.
