For me, it's as much about collecting the DVDs themselves as it is watching them. I also have a collection of far too many action figures that each probably cost as much as a DVD and I don't do anything with them except put them on the shelf and look at them too.

Ditto on my DVD collection. The vast majority are still shrink wrapped. Never seem to have the time to watch many, but keep buying none the less. Sorta like any thing else someone collects and puts on shelf - it's nice to look and nice to know I can watch (use) them anytime I feel like it.

70 unwatched dvds? Only 70?
I remember when I was a kid we'd have 70 unwatched dvds -- uphill, in the snow, both ways!

I said this before, it's crap shoot. Because you've always been hit with customs charges in the past, doesn't mean every other Canadian has or will. None of my 3 orders from the last sale got hit by customs. On the current sale, the first one got hit, but not the second... There's really no logic or science to it.

But... you're not watching them. You never have watched them. You haven't even opened them. The disc(s) could be busted in half. You have no way of knowing.

Some collectibles are things you can put on a shelf and look at. Like the Battlestar Galactica Titaniums, Transformers, or Trek ships I have. But that's what they do. A DVD is a form of media - it's the content that I'm buying. And If I don't open the case and put the disc(s) in the player, then it is of no use, or value, at all.

You've bought stuff you already don't have time to watch, and then buying more on top of that, that you'll never watch. Maybe you should step back from buying and actually get some "value" out of what you already have. Just a suggestion.

There are collectors. There are cinephiles. Then there are cinephile collectors, and that's where we find all those unsavory characters with piles of unwatched DVDs from the very first DDD sale.

[checked unwatched DVD pile]

Yup. Count me in.

It's just about what you choose to have around your house collecting dust. I used to have wooden dinosaur skeletons when I was 7. Now I have the Mario Bava Box Set. I feel I've made great strides.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy empty DVD cases, go to a cover site and print out a bunch of DVD covers for the cases, and then put them on your shelves? No one would know you don't have a big collection because you never play them anyway. Maybe get a shrinkwrap machine too for bonus effect.

It would be cheaper to just not have a hobby or anything you like to do. What a great time that would be.

I have to agree with the collectors on this forum who enjoy having the DVD's available to watch if and when they choose to. I myself have over 100 DVD's I haven't had time to watch either, but when I do have the time to watch something I really like the fact that I have a lot to choose from - depending on what mood I'm in.

Instead of weeding through aisle after aisle of crap in the video store, you have the comfort of knowing that you are interested in watching virtually anything you pull off the shelf. In addition, if I am going to watch something with others, what good is it to have a bunch of DVD's you've already seen? It provides a good opportunity to watch something new you might not have watched otherwise.

Either way, if I can buy DVD's for close to the same price it would cost me to rent them, I see tremendous value in stockpiling my own selections. Instant access is worth the price alone - whether I watch them when I buy them or 5 years from now.

But you're still paying for a rental. I prefer to apply that money to a purchase. If I'm "on the fence" about an unseen title I'll find someone to borrow it from first or rely upon my network of "previewers" (friends who rent or see films in the theatre) to aid in the decision.

Is there any chnce of West Wing Season 7 being price matched on DD to the amazon price? It is currently $26.99 on amazon and $36 and change on DD. I've been waiting pretty much all week to see if it'll drop.

Also Weeds Season 1. $18.49 at amazon and $24.89 at DD.

I used to make fun of or not respect people who buy dvds but never watch or open them but things do pile up and people emphasize on locking in that sale price and miss out on actually being a fan of whatever dvd is being sold. Like those women who buy clothes frequently and have tons of stuff never worn from years past. I would only pride myself on a collection if i had watched each one i owned at least once. otherwise it wouldnt be something to brag about. Like a guy who has tons of great books and never read one.

Of course i'll eventually catch up; and i think it has to do with when i first started building a collection when i only had a dozen titles and feared having nothing to watch
so i'd slow down on watching and did more stockpiling titles.

I received my 1st order today.

I ordered the Ladder Match 3 dvd set for 18.xx, it shows up as Rock's Greatest Matches but I took a chance and ordered it and it was the Ladder match one, for those who havent got it yet.

Might also get Heroes of World Class which is only 10 bucks with discount, A CRAZY time and a CRAZY story, whether you're a wrestling fan or not.

Well, if you take full advantage of the Total Access plan, you'll be paying much less than $1 for each rental. It's amazing.

There are three movies I kinda want to buy, more as jokes than anything, but hmm. They still might be a bit more than I want to spend (almost nothing).
Wing Commander
The Wizard
Romy And Michelle's High School Reunion

Are people on DVDTalk really trying to talk collectors out of collecting?

1 WBD082368 DVD : NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES CO $ 23.41 In-stock

May go ahead and order "A Bullet for the General", but it's currently out of stock, and I don't like having back orders ticking away without knowing when I'm going to get charged for them. (Yes, I know that it and several of the titles above comprise most of the "Once Upon a Time in Italy" boxed set, but I had already picked up one of the movies in that set, "Companeros.") Was going to order more seasons of Buffy, but it seems as if some of the prices went up, so I'm picking them up at Best Buy instead.

Best,
Scott

I couldn't really resist ordering since this set equals to like $3 per film so I got...

1 WBD007270 DVD : VAL LEWTON HORROR COLLECTIO $ 31.77 In-stock

It was tough to hold off on Twin Peaks Season 2 since I have the Season 1 set sitting there by its lonesome.
