$38 for the Decalogue set. Nice! Any idea if DVDPlanet will be matching the sale?

jdpatri 04-19-07 09:17 AM

Some really great stuff in there.

Does anyone know how the transfers for these facets releases of Kozintsev's Hamlet and King Lear compare to the Ruscico versions?

If you haven't seen anything by Grigori Kozintsev, I encourage you to give either of these films a spin. I consider his Hamlet to be, perhaps, the best cinematic adaptation of the play. He does things with light and shadow that leave you in awe. Awe, I say!

...anyway, looks like I'll be getting:

The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob and Skeleton of Mrs. Morales.

How is Experiments in Terror and 4 Films by Otar Iosseliani?

siegfried 04-19-07 12:24 PM

Wow, what a fantastic catalogue Facets has. There are so many films I would love to own...but unfortunately most of their transfers are of poor quality, so even at 52% off, it's not worth it. Read the reviews.

Johnny Zhivago 04-19-07 12:26 PM

Great price on The Decalogue... I paid twice that for my copy a few years ago. Should be a mandatory purchase for all fans of cinema at that price point IMHO...

Experiments In Terror is pretty cool, albeit very specific: you either enjoy this stuff or you don't. There's a review here from a few years ago. I really like the Outer Space, Sleep Machine, and Evil Millennium segments myself.

Yeah, I want to pick up some of the Bela Tarr titles, but I keep hearing that the R2 Artificial Eye releases are superior. Still, this sale has some great stuff for people who aren't region-free.

I agree .... for the price I'm tempted to pick some up. Also many of their titles are very obscure and if they go out of print, may never get released again....such as the 2 disc set on Artaud.

As far as "Satantango" ..... can't imagine not seeing it in a movie theater,
but I'll probably pick up the R2 version.

PotVsKtl 04-19-07 05:17 PM

These sales are killing me lately. I told myself yesterday I would stop and now there's a Facets sale. Unfair.

EDIT: Yeah, nevermind. The Decalogue image quality is poor and most of the rest aren't all that great of a bargain.

Mr Pixies 04-19-07 08:05 PM

I'm staying away, but Sins of the Fleshapoids is essential, great disc too, with commentaries and two more (short) films by Mike Kuchar.

bboisvert 04-19-07 08:19 PM

For any fans of sci-fi (especially obscure, post-apocalyptic sci-fi), End of August at the Hotel Ozone is worth checking out.

Can't imagine sitting in a theater for 7+ hours. :)

Yeah that's the only one I'm picking up, although it's possible it'll be cheaper during some future sale. Oh well, I've been wanting to see it for a while.

When I watched The Decalogue, it looked fine to me. Is there a better Region 1 dvd version out there?

NTSC, no. There's a R0 PAL version from Poland that rates the best over at the Beaver's review. Personally, I've been -pray- for a Criterion release... Wishful thinking.

The quality is better than "poor" but it is not "excellent". IIRC, been awhile since I watched it, the burned in English subs bothered more than the quality of the presentation. I would rate it as "good" and take into consideration that it's a 20 year old Polish television show we're talking about here. I'm not sure that Facets had the revenue at the time to pay for a complete digital restortation. Or maybe they did. Dunno. I'm just glad to have a copy.
