So this is unequivocably, without a doubt D-E-A-D across the U.S.?

Dang, I was going to go after work and pick up a few more. It worked at both Best Buy stores in my area.

Managed to get:
Batman
Batman Returns
Enter the Dragon
Casablanca
Gothika
Magnolia

Thanks to the original poster and all the bargain hunters who post here... since I ran across this board I've been a happy DVD collector even if my wallet's a little lighter than usual.

One of the Best Deals EVER! Thanks again to the OP!

I first read about the deal at noon on Monday and jumped outta my office chair and headed right to BB immediately. I made two purchases at lunch of 6 and 8 discs, respectively - the 2nd purchase being made after I confirmed the deal worked. I went back after work at 6pm and bought 10 more. Then I stopped by BB again on Tuesday after work and bought 2 more titles - this time also getting two 300 discs that weren't available on Monday. The shelves on Tuesday were pretty barren. Since I don't really care to see 300, I will probably use the movie checks to see other films at the multiplex. (For those who picked up numerous 300 movie checks, I'm sure you've noted that they expire on April 9th so you don't have long to use them up!)

I bought a lot of titles blind. If not for the amazing price of $5 each, I would not have bought any of them except for 'V For Vendetta' - which is the only movie I planned on buying this week after seeing the weekly ad. The only other 'sale' movie that I was interested in was 'Room With a View', but I already owned it.

Below are the 26 movies I purchased with this deal. The first group are movies I've seen before and either had never purchased yet or purchased to replace older single-disc versions:

Batman Returns (replacement)
Batman (replacement)
Boogie Nights
Chariots of Fire
GoodFellas
King Kong 1933 B&W
Million Dollar Baby
Mystic River
SE7EN
Shawshank Redemption (replacement)
V for Vendetta

This 2nd group were all blind purchases of movies I've never seen before:

Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Constantine
East of Eden
Enter the Dragon
Giant
Heat
Lost Boys
My Fair Lady
Phantom of the Opera
Poseidon
Rebel Without a Cause
True Romance
Unforgiven
Yankee Doodle Dandy

I know BB didn't intend to sell these SE DVD's for $5 each. But, on the other hand, they ended up getting $130 outta me (well, actually $120 since I used a couple $5 rewards certificates), versus the $10 I originally planned on spending. So, we both win!

We should be thankful that it lasted this long. A big glitch like that is usually corrected quickly.

What a great glitch! I ended up with:

Million Dollar Baby 3-disc
Gothika 2-disc
Heat 2-disc
Shawshank Redemption 2-disc X2

Batman SE
Batman Returns SE
Lost Boys SE
Mystic River SE
Poseidon 2-disc
True Romance SE
Boogie Nights
GoodFellas: 2 DVD Special Edition
Magnolie SE (Blind-buy)
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest: 2 DVD Special Edition (Blind-buy)
Casablanca: 2 DVD Special Edition (Blind-buy)
Citizen Kane (Blind-buy)

18 movies and 5 300 DVD's for around $96 after tax.

I already owned

I did not know this so you may be right. However, did Tower go out of business recently? If so, they may have been ready to go to Tower -- perhaps they were bought and paid for by them, but were later acquired either by BB directly or by a liquidation specialist who auctioned them off to the highest bidder --BB. I do not think that BB would have been happy having inventory stickered for another retailer, unless they bought it at a significant discount from the wholesaler. One or the other, or even both may have been at play with respect to these titles, as well as Warner, itself, clearing out its stocks to BB.

One of the most amusing posts I read about this deal was on FW. The FWer remarked to another buyer who he saw buying up all these titles in sight (I think somewhere in a suburban NJ store), are you a FWer, also? The buyer remarked something to this effect:

NO, A DVDTALKER!!

I was surprised by the number of hits here relative to FW and SD. Usually those other forums vastly outnumber posts elsewhere, and although they had a number of posts on this deal, here at DVD Talk, it swamped both of them, combined.

Interestingly, a deal about the $1.99 games at Best Buy also posted on FW, i think had something like 4 times the hits as the DVD thread there.

By the way, almost all of my purchases were blind buys. I figured that for $5.00 you certainly could not go wrong for a 2-3 disc special edition, especially since most of these films received either critical or popular acclaim. Even if a stinker, the extras provide insight into the craft and/or the writer/director, etc. so the knowledge gleaned from those would be valuable, as well.

Worst come to worst, if you didn't like the movie, make a gift of it (either opened or unopened) to someone, because for $5.00 that you paid, but with a sticker of at least $10.00 to the initiated, and upwards of $20.00 to those who are not familiar with such sales, you look pretty magnanimous, indeed!

Dead at my Best Buy. I went back for a 5th time and waited for the promotion to apply when the checker hit enter... Nothing.

I wonder if I returned my final purchase (the one where the deal did not work) if they would require me to give back the 300 promo dvd/movie tickets I received.

It was great while it lasted. Possibly one of the best deals I've seen in a while.

Too bad this is dead. I was hoping it would hold out a little longer so I could try to find a copy of Lost Boys someplace. That was the only other movie included that I really wanted to get. Oh well, I still got 10 movies for about 1/5th of the sticker price.

I never thanked you before, so thanks tophrman. How's it feel to start a thread that's gonna go down in history?

The deal is dead at Best Buy in City of Industry and Fullerton.

Costco has some of the Best Buy BOGOF titles for $8.99 like Casablanca, Citzen Kane, Unforgiven, My Fair Lady and some others.

I had come here to see if any of the other Batman movies were available for $10 since I'd missed picking up the SEs at Costco for that price and saw this thread and thanks to it I got 8 movies and 4 tickets to 300 for $42 and change. So I wasn't able to find GoodFellas. Boo-friggedy-hoo for me. My life is so ruined. I wanna sue someone!!!! Pffft!!!

Big ups to the OP and Beast Buy for being pokey about plugging the leak. Cheers!!!

Constantine

a 300 disk for each:

$35 + tax

Already had:

Batman
True Romance
Shawshank Redemption

Thanks also OP!

I was in Tahoe this weekend on vacation and the whole time Sunday and Monday until I got home @7PM, I was obsessing whether the deal would die or not. I went straight over to Best Buy after dropping off the wife and kids and got a bunch of movies, then went back Tues and got more. I was planning on going back today too, but the other posts finally saved me from my own insanity. I bought:

Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Chariots of Fire
Heat
Lost Boys
Boogie Nights
Constantine
Batman
Goodfellas
Enter The Dragon
Shawshank Redemption
Amadeus
6x 300 Promo Disks

I would have picked up at least these more, but the madness ended.
Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby
Casablanca (again)
Batman Returns (maybe)

Im getting ready to head back to my best buy for my 300 bonus disc copies and I was looking at me receipt. I noticed on the B1G1 I only got charged 6.66 for mystic river and then 0.00 for my citizen kane.

somehow they screwed up a screw up. SO i paid 6.66 for a b1g1 and 13.99 for running with scissors after my 10 dollar off coupon.

talk about best buy screwing up....

* has anyone else had this happen to them? only getting charged 6.66 for a b1g1?

Hmm, so I can just bring the titles to the front and maybe they will be free regardless of what I buy?
I guess I'll try to get them with my receipt though; I DID buy four movies (well, technically 2). I hope they'll honor it Thursday.

I suppose I would've been way more excited over this "sale" if I didn't already own 90% of the movies offered and had no interest whatsoever in the remaining 10%.

It's because you used the 10.00 off coupon. It took off 3.34 off the 9.99 titles and 6.00 off the 19.99 title. The difference is the tax you paid. It's correct.
