Apologies in advance, I've never really looked into this thread, but I happened to be near a Big Lot's yesterday and I had seen mention of this, so I took a peek.

The Wood Dale, IL store, about four shelves worth, not very neat, and some obviously opened.

I bought (and didn't see any other copies)
Steamboy
Rhapsody in August
Die Monster Die!

Also saw:
some wrestling stuff in a tin
tons of exercise DVDs
Robocop 3
The Squid and the Whale
a set with 20 vampire movies on 3-4 discs
something with a young Ted Danson
High School High (FS only)
Godzilla 98 (newer release)
Hello Kitty animated
Case Closed (anime)
lots of other stuff

Tell me about it. That Blue Springs store is a joke. I've never seen any of the good titles people talk about on here. I was in there yesterday and took the only copy of I Know What You Did Last Summer, so sorry if you wanted that one. Actually, that's the first DVD I've ever purchased there.

Just a heads-up on the MGM titles which are starting to show up at BL. I did a search at Hamilton Book for MGM films added to their site since April first and got 222 hits! They all appear to be $7.95. I wouldn't assume one could find all of them at Big Lots stores, but it's a good reference. I found several on the list I'd already picked up at BL this week for $3. Here's the Power Search page at Hamilton. Select MGM under "publisher", DVD under "binding" and fill in your choice of date under "added since."

Most of this MGM stuff has been midline priced for several years at $5.99-$9.99. $3.00 is a tremendous bargain, though!

This is a YMMV.

Just got the weekly ad for Biglots. On the back page, (page 8, lower right corner) they have advertised "Motion Picture DVD's, assorted titles, your choice, $3 each" The picture shows the following MGM DVDs:

Thelma & Louise (old version)
Johnny be Good
F.I.S.T.
Hannibal
For a Few Dollars More (looks like the old version)
Species

There are others shown, but I can't make out the titles.

The ad is good from Sunday, April 27 through Saturday, May 3, while quantities last. The ad I have is for Southern California.

Check your local ad, this may or may not be nationwide. If it is in your local ad, call your store on Sunday and ask if they have the DVD assortment shown in the ad in stock at the store.

This is a YMMV....

I returned to the Provo, Utah store and picked up:

Moulin Rouge
Rhapsody in August
We Were Strangers

I also saw the Claire Denis film "Chocolat", but was sad to find that the only copy was very clearly a floater.

These titles are not listed anamorphic, anyone know if they are?
The Mean Season
Cuba
Pit And The Pendulum
Joyride
Jean de Florette
I do the same and unfortunately MGM did a poor job on a lot of their titles with non-anamorphic transfers and reported poor transfers on some of these titles (eg. this Eight Men Out release). A good portion of the MGM ones I find the most interesting seem to be one or the other of those.

Anyone have an opinion on the Coming Home transfer? One reviews states it is awful and another says it is fine. Alexander the Great is another with wildly varying opinions on the transfer quality.

Add the following to the non-anamorphic list (in addition to the ones you listed)..

The Blockhouse
Chocolat
Electra
For a Few Dollars More
The Green Butchers

Also, the back cover of The Jackie Robinson Story makes it sound like it has been modified from its intended aspect ratio but 1.33:1 is correct for this.

I Just found, and bought, the 2-disc Spaceballs set! I got 14 DVDs total, this is insane.

It was mentioned before, but I'll mention it once again. At my store they had these DVDs in three different places. They were on the normal four-sided rack at the front of the store, on a table halfway down the main row at the front of the store, and also on a shelf in the electronics/books section. I've never seen this many DVDs at a Big Lots before.

I almost left before I found the DVDs in the electronics/books section. I'm glad I didn't though, since that's where Spaceballs and a few others that I bought were hidden away.

I also saw a 2-pack of the PC games City of Heroes/City of Villains for just $10. I have no clue if that's a deal or not.

God bless Big Lots.

Do you mind if I ask which store location in upstate SC this was at and if they had any more copies of Spaceballs? I'm in upstate SC too, and none of the ones I've checked out have had Spaceballs.

Went prowling at the local Biglots. Saw many of the previously mentioned titles and a couple of lesser mentioned MGM titles:

Support your Local Sheriff (James Gardner)
NOVO (a French language film by Jean-Pierre Limosin)
National Lampoon's Gold Diggers
The Howling SE
A Guy Thing SE (Julia Stiles, Jason Lee)

I was able to snag a copy of Robocop 2.

They still had the following from the Sony restock a couple of weeks ago:

Mountain Patrol: Kekexili
A League of their Own SE 2 disk
Casualties of War Extended Cut
The Missing SE 2 disk
Memento LE 2 disk
Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid
The Guns of Navarone SE

I moved these to the front of the display so folks can quickly find them.

there were a few others id seen which i hadnt read about here but i cant recall them.

I watched Eight Men Out last nite. I thought the transfer was good, slightly soft at times, but ok overall. I think it depends on your equipment. I was watching it on a 32" 720p. If one is watching it on a 50" plasma 1080p, then it will look soft/grainy. This is a title that I would never buy on blu-ray, so for $3 it satisfied my dvd itch... Just my 2 cents...

Man, a lot of you guys are having much better luck than any of us in the Dayton OH area. The only decent title I've been able to find so far is Body Double.
