Hey again, folks,
Out on yet another road work trip, and was seeing if any helpful Austin-area, Texas BL/DG shoppers are out there and can point me to some decent stores. Tomorrow's my last day in Houston, but with the way people drive here, I don't think I'm going to risk my life to go out. :) Anyway, in Austin for 2 weeks, and here's what I'm primarily looking for: IGPX - Vol. 6 Dan Doh: the Super Shot! - Vol. 3 (2-disc) s-CRY-ed (2 disc: Anime Legends) - Vol. 1 Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 1 tin (which I doubt I'll find) And they've been on past DG/BL shipments and I've found stores that have had older anime shipments... .hack/SIGN - Vol. 1, 4 Tsukikage Ran - Vol. 4 So far, nothing is really screaming BUY me this go around at BL (since thanks to printerati, I got what I wanted w/that last Sony/MGM shipment). :) Anyway, thanks for any help, guys and gals, Matt PS: Visited the Round Rock store, since that's super-close to the hotel here, and nothing there, though surprised they had a bit of Bandai DVDs there. No HBO stuff though (as the "Best of Arliss" set is tempting me for $3). |

I went by mine again last night and the only new stuff they had were these sets of 2 DVDs shrink-wrapped together. They were all unknown direct-to-video stuff. I can't remember the names, but I know Tori Spelling's career was represented in at least one of them.

Don't think these have been mentioned yet:
Normal Death in Gaza Red Dust Iron Jawed Angels Longford Tempted Mr. Jones The Holy Girl |
Checked the store by work, and they have a good chunk of the new stuff, including all of the titles Promethean lists right above me. Still no sign of The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, or Superbits, but a ton of HBO films and miniseries, including:
- Afterburn - American Splendor - Angels In America - Breast Men - Capturing The Freidmans (2-disc) - Citizen Cohn - The Comeback (complete series) - Descending Angel - Dinner With Friends - Elephant - Empire Falls - For Richer, For Poorer - Gotti - Hysterical Blindness - The Jack Bull - The Josephine Baker Story - The Laramie Project - Last Days - Live From Baghdad - Lucky Louie (complete series) - Maria Full Of Grace - Mind of a Married Man - Mistrial - My House In Umbria - Norma Jean And Marilyn (some really nice shots of Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino in this ;)) - Normal - Perfect Witness - Real Women Have Curves - Running Mates - Sometimes In April - Taxicab Confessions: New York, NY - Undefeated There were some comedy specials as well. Everything was priced at $3. I only picked up a handful of titles because I just wasn't interested in most of them, although I suppose I could afford to be less discriminating at $3 each. |
In addition to ^, more HBO stuff:
Best Of The Chris Rock Show Do You Believe In Miracles? Good Guys Wear Black (Chuck Norris, yeah!) K Street (The Complete Series) Naked World Poolhall Junkies Sonny ...a couple Ellen Degeneres stand ups The Heist (Pierce Brosnan) |
The HBO stuff hasn't reached my area (we never got the Warner SE's a few months back either), but they're stocking really heavily with the Sonys. I saw one store today (Burien, WA) that had 3 of the large displays piled on top of one another! Really good selection, though I couldn't go through all of layer 2 & 3's.
I think the Dark Crystals & Labirynth's are going fast because they look EXPENSIVE to the average person. One that I saw today that I don't THINK has been mentioned is Groundhog Day. |
Picked up Vol 1,2 and 3 of the HBO 1980's horror series "the hitchhiker". I used to loved watching these as a kid, they are all two disc sets. I don't think HBO ever released season box sets, these are the "best of" discs. Season 4 and 5 were on the usa network I think.
Anyways, these are going for 30 bucks on amazon, and 25 or on DeepDiscount. What a deal for 9 bucks for 6 discs! Big Lots is really spoiling me, probably added over 100 titles to my collection in the past year due to them. 75% of which are quality titles, I would have ended up buying at full price. 3 bucks is, INSANE! I remember when the 9.99 sales started around 2001 or so, I thought that was a steal. 3 bucks!??? |
No HBO titles yet at any SoCal location. However I am in Santa Fe, NM now and last evening found the following HBO titles:
Victory begins at home (Bill Maher) Cedric the Entertainer Best of Arli$$ (2 disc edition) Capturing the Friedmans (2 disc edition) A Handful of Dust |
man, I really wish I could find those other 2 vol. of Hitchhiker...found v1 and thought that was all there'd be!
Anyone else find any *other* series of Cracker? (other than 1) |
I forgot to mention that I saw Cracker 1 as well, and at least one Hitchhiker volume, although I don't remember which one. I have passed on all of the HBO TV series for now, since I still have so many anime series to get through. ;) I'll regret it later, I'm sure.

Every store around here gets a different batch. Theres lots of copies of some titles at one store, then none at the other one. I guess theres no rhyme or reason to which store gets what you just have to check each one. I managed to get a Groundhog Day and a Labyrinth. But I haven't seen hardly any of the stuff mentioned above.

I live in south Louisiana and traveled to 5 different Big Lots yesterday in hopes of finding some of the MGM and HBO titles. Ended up being a very disappointing day. Two of the stores had a handful of MGM titles (none of the MGM World Films) and absolutely no HBO titles to be found at any of the locations. Maybe they haven't reached this part of the world yet. All of the stores seemed to still have a bunch of the Sony titles. I must've seen dozens of copies of Breakfast on Pluto yesterday. Seems this area also has a healthy helping of the cheap looking ultimate fighting/wrestling discs. If anyone has picked up any extras of certain titles that I am looking for, I would love to work out a deal. Don't have anything to trade since I didn't come across any good finds yesterday. I'm new(ish) to the board, but I have managed to make it to the good traders list already. The titles that I am looking for:
Jean de Florette (MGM World Films) Spetters (MGM World Films) Spaceballs (CE) Labyrinth (CE) Dark Crystal (CE) Lucky Louie (HBO series) Thanks. sam |
Got Roseanna and Lewis Black Stand-Ups (sucker for standups)
Def Comedy Jam and a couple of other HBO shows but NO Angels In America,Arliss,Mind of the Married Man, Spaceballs and Dark Crystal Damn. |
Nothing new in the Twin Cities...just the dregs of the recent MGM titles and, of course, multiple copies of Breakfast on Pluto.

Aside from a few cheapies in cardboard sleeves it's back to nothing but PC games and VHS inventory. Not three weeks ago the shelves were overflowing with DVDs.
Looks as if I'll be calling ahead from now on before venturing out. |
The stores in my area hardly do a good job with stocking dvds. The best of the Lots had a few choice titles (and only one of each). Picked up Maria Full of Grace, Elephant and Capturing the Friedmans. I never seen Elephant but I've been curious and I do like the director. Maria and Friedmans are great. Can't wait to watch the second disc for the latter. My thanks for the heads up. Now, if only the local stores would do better and stock more discs.

Went back to my local Big Lots picked up at $3 each:
Agnes of God The Changeling Citizen X Gattaca (Superbit) The Hitcher (1986) The Hitchhiker Hollow Man 2 The Holy Girl Last Days Love For Rent The Mind Of The Married Man 1st Season One Day In September Sheena Sonny Stiletto Dance Taxicab Confessions Tempted |
No HBO dvds in Orlando yet. There's about 6 dvds I want
|
I got a little carried away, but what the heck. Here is my list taken from my DVDSpot account after adding them to my collection:
3-Iron (2004) Longford (2006) Normal (2003) Citizen X (1995) The Gathering Storm (2002) Path to War (2002) The Laramie Project (2002) The Mind of the Married Man: The Complete First Season (2001) Lewis Black: Black on Broadway (2004) Lewis Black: Red, White and Screwed (2006) Dennis Miller: The Raw Feed (2002) Chris Rock: Never Scared (2004) Death in Gaza (2004) A Father...A Son...Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2005) Soldiers in the Army of God (2000) Baghdad ER (2006) Capturing the Friedmans (2003) Cracker: Series One (1993) The Comeback: The Complete Only Season (2005) Best Of Arliss: Volume 1 Lucky Louie (2006) |
If anyone DOES run across v2&3 of Hitchhiker, PM me!
|
I went back today to pick up Cracker after reading the good reviews...but it was gone. :( I ended up picking up The Laramie Project, Maria Full of Grace, Citizen X, Soldiers in the Army of God, Bagdad ER, Taxicab Confessions and Jerry Seinfeld's "I'm Telling You For the Last Time" Live on Braodway.

Modesto, CA
Visited the west store and found nothing new on their messy DVD endcap ~ but walked in another direction to discover a new cardboard display a few aisles over. Picked up:
Auto Focus Taxicab Confessions: New York, New York Vampires: Los Muertos Gattaca (Superbit) Joe Dirt The Dark Crystal (Collector's Edition) Original SRP $50! Sweet and Lowdown (WS/FS) Many thanks to poster kg3 for pointing out that there were WS editions of Sweet and Lowdown amongst the FS only editions. This store had 8 copies and thorough searching located the one that had a WS side also. This was the disc I wanted most as I am trying to complete my Woody Allen collection. There were 3 copies of Dark Crystal CE, but they all rattled like floaters! I took the one that had the least "noise," but at home found that it too had a loose DVD with tiny nicks on the surface. Also discovered that the clerk only charged me for 6 DVDs, so I guess Big Lots gave me this damaged merchandise for free. Others titles I spotted: Angels in America Chris Rock: Never Scared Elephant Sheena FS Surrender, Dorothy Wah Wah Didn't see any of: American Splendor Groundhog Day Labyrinth (CE) Spaceballs |
