Tower Records Going Out of Business Sale

I kept hearing on the news today (10/6) that Tower Records is going out of business and they are going to slash their prices dramatically starting tomorrow (Sat. 10/7) Anyone else hear any news? You might want to check it out.

I would suspect that the initial discounts will not result in any great bargains, especially since most of their stock is tagged at MSRP. Factor in local taxes, and for now, you most likely would do better shopping at your favorite online store.

Having said that .... Tower (at least here in NYC) has a terrific selection, and they have many hard-to-find (and sometimes OOP) titles that have languished on their shelves, so you may want to check out whether that title sitting at the top of your "hard to find wish list" is there.

I'm going to the Tower near me at Lincoln Center this morning, so I'll report back what (if anything) is going on there as far as sales are concerned. I also don't expect much in the way of discounts at this point.

Cool ..let me know on the stores..I bought stuff as far back as vhs and laser from the Tustin Store..it was cool to stop in and check out stuff when in area..nice selection of mags also. Ofcourse with online competition and downloading it was inevitable.
Tower defintely has the coolest and best selection of cds and dvds.
I talked with someone at Towers today..10% off cds/dvds,30%off magazine,20%off books..will ofcourse change as time goes on..and store will be closed from a month untill the end of the year. Since it is The Holiday Shopping season..I'm sure most stuff that I would want will be bought up at "bargain prices" around the %25-30% off that will be found any day of the week online. I do hope Toweronline stays open as they have a good sale once in awhile.

Oh no! Not Tower!

I hope they don't close the original Sacramento one! I was raised about a mile away from it, and it's kind of historic at this point. Tower Theatre, Tower Cafe, and the various other Tower-themed stores will be lonely. Serioulsy, I've been going to the Tower stores for my whole life. Waaah!

But seriously, they needed to do something about their prices... Time to use up my Tower gift cards.

From what people are saying here, the discount is only 10% off right now.

Sadly, they're all being liquidated...

As has been said by others, it's a shame, they were the best chain that was the industry when it came to selection. Unfortunately, they nver could complete price wise, and that was their ultimate un-doing...

The big Lincoln Center location has "STORE CLOSING" signs up, but no indication inside as to what that might mean. If you ask, you discover:

They no longer are renting, and rental copies are NOT being sold off at this time. They simply sit there.

The big sale is 10% off the MSRP white sticker price on the back of the DVD. Normally, Tower has a limited number of titles on sale, from 20-25% off. Not any more. No "sale prices" on any items. Everything is simply 10% off the MSRP.

So ..... there were more substantial discounts available yesterday BEFORE the "store closing" sale started. Nice.

ran by nashville, and they were taping off the rental section...seems the liquidators were looking for a pricing scheme.

The stores in Japan will still live on. That doesn't help the US stores any, but Tower Japan bought out their US parents there years ago.

Do you know if all the Tower-Asia stores are independent? When I was traveling around Asia I use to always check out the local Tower Records...because I found that where there was a Tower Records, there was always interesting stores and clubs. Locally, Tower Records was always the coolest mainstream chainstore I have ever been to. I for one will miss them.

I'll definitely miss them too. I made half of my B&M purchases of DVDs at Tower (the other half primarily from Borders and Target). They always had a terrific selection of classic films and competative prices on new releases. Just loved the service, selection and atmosphere of the place. Never cared much for Virgin, so glad to see they're leaving Boston though.

I was also disappointed on my last trip to Bangkok that the Tower Records there had closed up, too.

Sad to see this happen. Sam Goody wasn't much of a shock, but I hate seeing Tower go. I have no Tower near me but often browsed their store in Nashville, and visited their locations in NYC and Chicago.

Went to the Tower today in Carle Place, Long Island. Same 10% dvd/cd deal as above. Also - books were 20% off, and magazines were 30% off.
