100 Years of Horror Cheap Price?

I was looking up the upcoming release of 100 Years of Horror on DVD (September 5) and it was $17.99 at Amazon and $14.99 at BestBuy.com

What do you think the chances are of this actually being at Best Buy on Tuesday? And how come a 13 part documentary is so cheap?

alfonsosoriano 09-02-06 01:42 PM

Woah, that looks awesome. I want it. Badly.

horroru 09-02-06 01:47 PM

I ordered my thru DVD Planet for $12.95 (that includes shipping!) and I just got an email that they've shipped it already.

Not sure why the price is so cheap -- Passport video probably owns all the episodes outright, so whatever they make on this set is pure profit, so they price it to move (just a guess on my part).

I have the single disc they released a few years ago, and it's kinda fun for horror fans but for most knowledgeable horror fans it won't blow your mind or anything -- you'll know most of what is talked about. Plus it only covers up to the 1990's. Host Christopher Lee is great though, and there are some great interviews with Carpenter and Peter Cushing that make it easily worth the price.

alfonsosoriano 09-02-06 01:48 PM

Anything after the 90's sucks, so it's ok.

What a terrible generalization. Was the 90s incredibly weak, yes, but Cube and some others came out at this time, so I wouldn't say it sucks.

I had no idea this was coming out! I'm also an owner of the first DVD and thank god I held out and didn't resort to buying the entire docu on VHS! Thanks for the heads up.

Not to mention a lot of international genre fare.

alfonsosoriano 09-02-06 03:51 PM

Can you read? I said anything after the 90's sucked. That would be 2000 and on. Sure, there are a FEW horror movies from the 00's and on that are alright, but not too much.

Brent L 09-02-06 05:01 PM

That's still a a terrible generalization:

-28 Days Later
-Cabin Fever
-Dawn of the Dead
-The Descent
-Dog Soldiers
-Final Destination series (I love em at least, huge guilty pleasure of mine)
-Freddy vs. Jason
-Ginger Snaps series
-High Tension
-Hostel
-Jason X (ok, not a great horror, but a great b-movie, almost parody)
-Jeepers Creepers
-Joy Ride
-Malevolence
-May
-Monster Man
-The Others
-The Ring (only the first one)
-Shaun of the Dead
-Saw series
-The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
-The Toolbox Murders
-Undead
-What Lies Beneath
-Willard
-Wrong Turn

And I could go on listing even more than I really enjoyed, as did many other horror fans.

alfonsosoriano 09-02-06 05:13 PM

I even said in my last post there are a few that were good. From that list I only really enjoyed a few.

Getting ready to order this from Dvd Planet. I also notice Passport is releasing Century Of Science Fiction on 10/03/06.....5 disc set, 26 episodes also hosted by Christopher Lee.

I hope I can find it at Best Buy, I'd rather not order it offline, but I guess if that's what it comes to then whatever.

I bought the whole VHS box set years ago, for quite a lot of money, the box set is huge!

Thanks for the info Reaper, didn't see that! I'll have to pick that up as well. Wonder how DVD Planet is beating out all the other etailers on price, cause it's almost 50% off....

Thanks for pulling that list together Brent of horror movies from 00-06. I was just too tired to do it....

Price shows up on Amazon as $12.99 for me (with a $14.98 list price).

That's the single disc version with a running time of only 120 minutes.

The Monkees 09-04-06 12:50 PM

If it shows up on BestBuy.com is it safe to assume they will carry it in the store?

beene1000 09-04-06 01:07 PM

"If it shows up on BestBuy.com is it safe to assume they will carry it in the store?"
You can check to see if they carry any DVD by using the availability feature on the item's page. It can tell you if the DVD is available at a BB anywhere within a 100 miles of you.

I found this documentary to be fine, but I'm personally an older horror fan, so I'll be holding out to get the excellent "Universal Horror" documentary attached on the Dracula and Frankenstein DVDs later this month.

Hey B,
The last specs I read looked like all the extras on the Frank and Drac 75th releases were the same ones from previous discs.
If "Universal Horror" is included, I may pick these up! Do you have any more details-- is this going to be included on the actual disc, or is is a bonus disc?
Thanks for any info.

dvdlover631 09-05-06 01:17 PM

I was at my local Best Buy this morning and they did NOT have the 100 Years Of Horror set. They show on their web site but not available at any local BB, just online. DAMN!

speedyFan 09-05-06 02:01 PM

That sucks. I was hoping to pick it up tomorrow.

The Monkees 09-05-06 03:02 PM

Yeah, my Best Buy didn't have it either! Nor did FYE.

I'm going to Tower Records tonight with hopes they have it there, if not I'll just order it from Best Buy.com

robertw477 09-05-06 06:56 PM

That looks like a great set at a reasonable price. I love those old horror movies. I will be buying this set as well. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi two or th scariest guys in movie history.

Rob

Brent L 09-05-06 07:36 PM

I picked this up at Overstock.com for $8.77 since I had a $5 off coupon in my account.

The Monkees 09-07-06 11:01 PM

I just got mine today from BestBuy.com

alfonsosoriano 09-11-06 02:11 PM

I just put an order down for it on DVDPlanet along with two other DVDs. I can't wait to get this and start watching it.

Brent L 09-11-06 02:22 PM

I got it in the mail from Overstock the other day, and it was in perfect condition. Around 12.5 hours of horror history on five discs for $8.xx? You sure can't beat that!
