My apologies if any of this is old news, but doing a search didn't turn up anything on these. I assume that YMMV as to whether your local Wal-Mart will have these.

1. Pricing is down to $9.96 for the Chronicles of Riddick Trilogy (lower than both Amazon and DDD - 20%). Has the fold-out holoprinted slipcase.

2. I know there's an impending SE of Hudson Hawk due this month, but I found a different version in the $5.50 bin.

First, the one I already had, which is pictured at Amazon and DDD: Contains widescreen and fullscreen (no mention of anamorphic), 1998 release date:

The new one. New artwork, specifically says "1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen", 2005 release date:

3. Starman, widescreen. I've seen a lot of people lamenting the fact that the version currently available is full-screen. This is the 2001 release flipper containing both 2.35:1 widescreen (Edit: anamorphic widescreen) and full screen. Audio is only 2.0, but for someone jonesing for the widescreen version, it's worth $5.50... my Wal-Mart had several copies.

That Starman WS is indeed anamorphic although it's a DVD-5.

Thanks for this info. I would like to get my hands on an anamporphic copy of Starman. There arent any special features so it doesnt really matter that it is only a DVD-5.

Wow, great price for Riddick. Good enough price for me to go and get it now. By the way, the second Hudson Hawk DVD Cover Art looks so much better than the first. Still, I can't wait for the SE as I have always wanted to own the movie.

The 1st cover art is the same as the VHS. I actually prefer either of these to the artwork for the new SE. "Danger is his middle name"??? WTF? Where in the hell did THAT come from? Couldn't they have come up with a better tagline?

Sanitarium, could you explain what you mean by dvd 5? I thought that was a term used by bootleggers.

Usually more space (dvd 9) equals less compression, but not always. Sometimes the movie takes up only a small portion of a dual layer disk and a single layer disk (dvd 5) would have fit the movie if a barebones release.

I tried to buy that Riddick collection today but it wasnt marked down to that price. I asked the lady if she would scan it to see if it was cheaper than the 13.47 (or whatever the price was on the little taab) and she matter of factly told me "I know that's the price." She was right but but boy do I wish that she were wrong in this instance to shut her up. I hate when people who really don't know shit about dvds or prices display an arrogance that they know it all. Thanks for the heads up as I'll check some other stores and see if I can find this deal.

It's a shame they didn't see fit to toss in John Carpenter's recently recorded for another region's release commentary track for Starman. Feh. :(

You are right. I don't know what the manufacturing cost difference is between DVD-5 and DVD-9, but I heard it was trivial. Does it cost more money to transfer a movie at a 4.5 Mbps bitrate vs. 7 Mbps? I doubt it. My opinion is that there should be no such thing as DVD-5 any more because I believe the "kinks" have been worked out of DVD-9 and they are reliable. Any studio that squeezes a movie (whether barebones or not) onto a DVD-5 is screaming "cheapskate" to me... the rare times I'll buy a DVD-5 is if it's a movie I really want that has no better release and it's in a $4.88 or less WMT display.

I think DVD Talk needs a thread about layer formats and movie bitrate or disc usage (if such a thread exists I couldn't find it)... assuming there would be enough people interested to make it worthwhile.

Went to two Wal Marts for Riddick, both had for $13 and change... Since it seems to retail around for $14.99, I think I'll wait for sales (like Black Friday) or when Universal puts their stuff on sale, as I think then it'll be around $10.

Thanks for the info Filmmaker. I can also confirm that at the Vegas Wal Marts that Riddick was $13.

Weird... so it looks like it was a mis-price by my local WallyWorld... :(
