Why Is Blue Ray Saw Only $15.96?

This price seems really really cheap for a Blue Ray DVD. Is this is a misprint?

That is definately a good price. BUT... that said, all the initial Blu-Ray discs are basically damaged* (in my opinion) and will likely all be replaced by better versions by next year (my speculation).

* I consider SL (20 GB at that) using MPEG-2 encoding with the blacks/whites clipped to be damaged (at the least something not to purchase until fixed).

Like Lionsgate needed an excuse to keep re-issuing this movie!

The only downside is you'll have to pay $1000 to watch a $16 BD version of Saw....at least until November.

I thought Blu-Ray was 26 GB on a single layer. And HD-DVD is 15 GB per side, thus 30GB...

It is 25 GB on a SL BD. However, due to poor manufacturing yields (currently -- I'm sure this will be fixed relatively soon), the usable space on a BD is reported to be around 20 GB. 5 GB is essentially wasted due to manufacturing issues.

Wasn't this film shot on a very low budget and not looked the greatest to begin with? ala Clerks? How is a higher res format going to help that when the source isn't of the greatest quality?

Or do I have no idea what I'm talking about?

Funny how nobody bitched when somebody posted a bargain involving a single-layer DVD. This could get old very quick.

Personally, I think it is helpful to point out flawed discs, even in the bargain section. It would be the same thing if there was a bargain on some Universal DVD-18.

These initial Blu-Ray discs WILL be fixed at some point. Why is it bad to mention that the discs are flawed?

And this is coming from someone (slightly) more on the side of Blu-Ray. But I wouldn't touch these initial discs with a 10' pole.

And it's not just that they are single-layered. They are using inefficient compression which degrades the blacks/whites. But to each their own, I just wanted to prevent people from thinking this was too good to pass up and getting pissed for wasting their money.

Look at the "bargain" thread about the Star Wars Trilogy. I warned people about them being non-anamorphic there too.

Completely justifiable.

True, although I would argue that there is a big difference between anamorphic/non-anamorphic and not using the space on a disc well. I'm amazed at the amount of anamorphic, double-layer discs these days, where the movie content is squeezed to the point where it could fit on a single disc.

I think there are plenty of people who categorize bitching about the quality of a release as either thread-crapping or something that belongs in the discussion forum, not the deals forum.

Since the one and only reason to purchase a hdbludvdray title is suppossed to be a massive improvement in video and audio quality over DVD, any such discs with only marginal improvement are essentially defective - negating most, if not all, potential bargainhood.

If someone were to post about how a title is just massively Defective Recorded Media (DRM) - then that would be a threadcrap because ALL hdbludvdrays are defective by design and anyone buying one already knows that.

Yawn. See how easily bargain threads get hi-jacked.

I'm with Peep. The OP could have had his questions answered simply by someone saying "Lions Gate catalog titles have a reduced MSRP versus day and date titles." Period. The end.

Instead, we get the Usual Suspects sounding off about a product that hasn't hit the market yet.

Peep, correct.

This definitely shouldn't be in the "bargains" forum.

Baloney. Pricing significantly below average is not a worthwhile bargain discussion? Give me a break.

Please don't argue... We're still kinda deciding on keeping HD/BR bargains in here, creating a seperate sub-forum for them or just moving them to HD-Talk for the time being..

Well, I had written a message discussing my opinions on disc space usage, but given that we've been told not to argue here, I deleted it. So in which thread/forum am I supposed to throw in my 2 cents about how I agree with Peep's comments?
