I spend too much money on DVDs.

I bought Ransom: SE for my mom, and all three Mighty Ducks films for myself. At 5.99 I couldn't pass up such fine nostalgia.

And I was finally motivated to pick up Bottle Rocket, though it's not part of this sale, it's 5.99 as well.

I picked up:
MIGHTY APHRODITE
DUETS
CLERKS (ANIMATED SERIES)
SWINGERS (COLLECTOR'S EDITION)

Total: $23.96

I am still debating on 25th hour, Cider House Rules, and Kolya. I just don't want things to get out of hand as they usually do w/ DDD sales.

Thanks DDD!

I am hardly an authority!! But there some obvious picks and drops!!

What to AVOID: (non-16/9, cut, poor transfers, simply bad productions)

Behind the Sun (HOH-style subs…really poor)

Ciao Professore (non-anamorphic, yet a great Wertmuller)

Dead Tired (very poor transfer)

Everybody’s famous (terrible transfer)

EVITA (non-anamorphic)

Horseman on the Roof (non-anamorphic, poor transfer, CUT)…UK new disc is uncut!

The Horse Whisperer (why America is the only country that did not get the SE…is a mystery to me, avoid: non-anamorphic)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (DDD are out of their element-the film is not 16/9)

IL Postino (poor non-anamorphic image, get the anamorphic UK disc)

I am not scared (an average transfer and a so-so film)

Jet Lag (despite Binoche and Reno being teamed up: poor!!)

Lovers on the Bridge: one of the best films of the 90s. Typical US snubbing presentation: Get the UK-anamorphic print.

MALENA: this is obvious!!

Mexico City…great opening…terrible ending!!

Mighty Aphrodite: a SE will appear soon!

Purple Noon: this could either way! Great film but mediocre non-anamorphic transfer. The French SE blows away this mess. Yet, knowing that a SE edition will never appear in R1 land you might as well spend 5$. But…I hate supporting the axemen!

Queen Margot: one of the jewels in European cinema gets a “deserving” treatment- non anamorphic transfer, massive cuts, terrible sanitized translation… funny thing is the cover scene was cut from the R1 morality-dogs: Miramax. The beautiful naked Adjani is nowhere to be seen wrapped in the quilt with monsieur Perez. Buy both the anamorphic R4 Australian disc (French print) and the R2 UK disc (also French cut). Both contain two different scenes both well-worth the investment. For the record: this was the film that made me go region-free in February of 1999.

Ready to Wear a.k.a Pret-a-porte…non-anamorphic: typical Miramax hack-job!!

Revenge of the Musketeer: never mind that Sophie is inhere. Poor, poor, and a terrible translation!

Rocketeer: average non-16/9 transfer!

Talk of Angels: let’s see how we can screw this film…got it: we will release it on DVD.

A Thousand Acres:….too bad that Mrs. Lange was in it!!

Up Close and Personal…not bad…bad transfer!

Wings of the Dove…we are Miramax….what could go wrong here!!

Ransom: I am almost tempted to recommend this film to people so they see what a special edition is NOT supposed to look like!!

What to GET: (anamorphic, decent trasnfer, good films, good bargain)

Three colors trilogy

Children of Heaven (decent transfer)

Cinema Paradiso (with the 4DVD UK set canceled…a must)

The Closet (silly but has two of France’s best: Depardieu/Auteuil)

Dead Man: a very decent Jarmusch with a great transfer

Dirty Pretty Things (not great but Audrey is worth the 5$)

HEAVEN/Tykwer (probably the best bargain here)

In the Bedroom

The Insider (one of the better deals here)

Italian for beginners (one of the best Dogme films)

Kolya (you guessed it…loved every bit of it, the square where the Czech
protest the Russian invasion…been there twice!!)

L’ultimo Bacio/ The Last Kiss (great film, and Giovanna Mezzogiorno is a beauty. So, is the aging Stefania Sandrelli). From the director of Ricordati di me!!!

Rabbit Proof Fence: I have now forgiven Phillip Noyce for Sliver…so, recommended!

Rogue Trader: really enjoyed this film!!

Shipping News: I love, love, love Judi Dench!!

The Shiner: British crime mess, yet, times better than REVOLVER. Sir Caine is a pleasure to watch. He makes a decent gangster.

St. Ives- for 5$ this is a very decent period piece.

Strictly Ballroom: I like Baz!!

Taste of others: great comedy, great transfer!! Real bargain!!

Temptress Moon: no one talks about this Cannes winner yet Gong Li is phenomenal!! Good anamorphic transfer as well. Looks a bit hazy and too yellowish but that is how the film was shot. One of the great surprises at Cannes…and what a story!!!!

Torrents of Spring: this film is near impossible to find anymore. Nastassja Kinski and Valeria Golino (Respiro)….what’s not to like. Decent transfer as well. And I know how much Ebert hated it!!

Mansfield Park: I really liked it!!

For those who don't own it, 25th Hour is a terrific movie and more than worth the $5.99 price.

I hope that having Scream as part of this $5.99 sale means that Buena Vista is planning on releasing a 10th Anniversary, Director's Cut, Anamorphic dvd this Halloween......eh, who am I kiddin'.

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Great price, although I got mine for $5.00 back in December at CC. Still worth it.

I might pick up the FDTD sequels to complete the trilogy.

Mrs

WHAT TO AVOID:

MALENA: this is obvious!!
Not to me it wasn't -- so I checked DVD Beaver. Apparently, 13 minutes or so of a beautiful, beautiful (did i mention her beauty) and frontally nude Monica Belluci were nixed in the Region 1 release. A horrible, horrible shame, indeed.

2-Disc Special Edition Region 0 NTSC is the way to go here.

Does anyone know if "Cold Creek Manor" was only ever released full screen? That's what it says the disc is under the specs, and if so, I'll pass on it. Or is this a typo from DDD? Thanks for any help!

I don't think I've gotten around the the stack of DVDs I ordered from the last DDD sale on these titles. But I still found a few more that I'll probably order once I figure out what I have at home (don't want to buy dup's if I can help it).
