Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 2-Disc for $21.99/1-disc $15.98 @ Amazon

Maybe this just came on at Amazon but I noticed that the regular version can be pre-ordered (it's $15.98 btw) but this I can't. I wanted to do it now while I'm still on the Amazon Prime free trial.

Also, anyone think that's a decent price for it? It's retailed at $39.99 I think.

Amazon.com seems to have a glitch over the weekend, where some DVDs can't be ordered or pre-ordered on the individual DVD listing. Still, I have found some pre-orders in their New/Future Releases page, where you can see and pre-order the items and order them by hitting the ADD to CART button at the end of the list. You can see the list here:

Thanks, the pre-order button is back. I'll remember that in the future.

I'll change the topic so we can consider this a discussion on the Goblet of Fire DVDs... So, is $21.99 a good price? I imagine places like CC or BB will have it for around $25 when it comes out, right?

Oh, and in my original post, I made a mistake, the retail price is $30.98 not $39.99...

marty888 02-05-06 07:20 AM

If the MSRP is $30.98, I would imagine that intense interest and competition would put this below $20 for the first few days, perhaps as low as $16-18.

gjamesm 02-05-06 08:20 AM

ch.com has it for $18.58

Xbox69 02-05-06 11:07 AM

I can see Wal-Mart having this for $15 or less during the 1st week of release.

Actually, most of the big stores have the basic vesion on sale cheap and then the 2-disc SE for near full price as an afterthought (think Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Phantom Of The Opera, Cinderella Man, War Of The Worlds, Batman Begins).
I can see Amazon lowering their pre-order price, though as they did in just about all of the above examples.

I have purchased all the previous 2 disc Harry Potter films on release day day for $14.99 or less. Looking around today, the best price I see is $24.95 (shipping included). I have no hope I will see a $14.99 price on release day. Are these price increases justified considering that dvd is approaching the end of it's life cycle? The answer for me is NO .

The reason you were getting the previous releases for $15 on release week is because there was only one version available (2-disc). Now WB's going to release a 1-disc (which will be the one on sale for $14.99 or so), and the 2-disc won't get discounted much, if at all.

I'm well aware of that. I am simply comparing apples to apples. You still get less for your money or you are charged more. Either way, it isn't justified.

TheMovieman 02-05-06 12:53 PM

Now I pre-ordered it at $21.99, if they did drop the price a little, maybe $19.99 or whatever, will the price be changed in my order or will I have to cancel the pre-order and do it again? It might not be alot but any dollar saved is good...

My experience is that they won't automatically charge you the lower price. However it is very easy to call Amazon (800-201-7575) and have them make a price adjustment if you notice that the price changed. No need to cancel/reorder.

Absolutely true, and I have been very vocal about my displeasure with this new 1-disc & 2-disc simultaneous releases. In all other instances, I've ordered the R3 version instead, because they usually only sell the 2-disc version, and it's about the same price as the 1-disc on sale over here. I haven't seen Harry Potter for sale yet at my preferred etailer, so I don't know if they'll even stock it.

It seems that R1 is the only region that the studios pull this practice on, further letting us know that they think the general consumer is a fucking idiot. :(

If an item ships after your free trial expires are you still eligible for the free two day shipping?

My free trial expires at the end of March and I would like to know if I order any April releases before then if I will still receive free two day shipping.

NeonGlow 02-05-06 07:24 PM

The single disc is enough for most consumers. That's all they need for their loss leaders. There's really no need for them to discount the deluxe 2 disc cause collectors will buy it anyways.

silentbob007 02-06-06 07:19 AM

If the extras on the second disc mirror the extras on the other second discs ... totally not worth more money for me.

What if they threw on the SNL sketch with Lindsey Lohan?

sotra 02-06-06 07:44 AM

$15.99 AR (22.99 BR) at fye.com (no upc needed) - http://shop.fye.com/product.aspx?sku...2633&loc=50244

Free shipping over $25.

PS! Think Narnia CE (or was it SE?) 2 disc is $20.99 AR IIRC

Thats a good price. You have to pay shipping and taxes (most people will have to). If you don't order anything else to get the free shipping.

Costco.com has the 2-disc HP for $20.99. And sometimes the store is cheaper than the website.

sanjoelo 02-06-06 11:12 AM

Is it true that "..Goblet.." will also be released on high-def DVD? I heard a rumor that this would be among the first HD titles released.

sanjoelo 02-06-06 11:16 AM

n/m, google is my friend:

Quotage: Variety is reporting (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?lay...238&cs=1)today that many of the big studios will be releasing films on DVD in on "a high- definition digital disc" later this year. Among those films listed is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Quotage:
"The "Mission: Impossible" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogies, as well as Peter Jackson's "King Kong" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," will all be released on high-definition digital discs this year. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, nearly every studio is expected to announce their first slate of high-def digital disc titles coming to market in 2006. More than 75 titles (new and old movies plus TV shows) are expected with the introduction of the first DVD player, with dozens and maybe hundreds more by the end of the year."

I think I will cancel that order. I never thought about Costco but they do normally have it cheaper. I'll just keep an eye on Amazon to see if they lower the price, if they do I'll order it again...

TheMovieman 03-01-06 11:25 PM

Update: Amazon has lowered the price to $20.06 (odd price, lol).

ehorre01 03-02-06 07:32 AM

Are they FYE rebates online only?

fallfan 03-02-06 07:40 AM

Looks like BestBuy.com is 20.99. Online sales tend to reflect what the first week price is there.
