Great! Any idea what films they're including in the Studio Classics set, and why they're charging $299.99 for it? Maybe it's because it's every film Fox ever released?

darkside 09-14-05 10:06 PM

37 discs so its $8.10 a disc. I've been buying the ones I want for around $7.50 so I'll pass on the whole set.

Same here.

I wonder how successful they are with these "exclusive" bundles that actually contain nothing that is exclusive to Amazon.

The Fox Studio Classics set seems to be made up of the classics that were on sale at Best Buy last week in the 5 for $35 sale.

Yeah, that's what stopped me from buying any of them. I had a large list made up, and I started selecting "in-store pickup" and almost all of them were unavailable anywhere in a 90-minute driving radius. So I went to the checkout to see how much the shipping would be and promptly cancelled my order.

marty888 09-16-05 07:45 AM

Yup, shipping costs (especially after the tax is also added) has killed Best Buy as a source for me - haven't ordered from them ever since their new policy went into effect.

I imagine that for someone fairly new to DVDs, and with a fat checkbook, these Amazon bundles could be quite appealing - and are not a bad deal overall.

Deep Discount DVD now has the Warner Classic Mega Collection at $1,451.98. $547.51 cheaper than Amazon, but still a lot of cash.

Well, it is going to be only $1161.58 during the DDD 20% off sale. -wink-

Actually, that's an incredibly good price. Doesn't this set contain 200 titles, including a couple of box sets like The Thin Man Collection?

shawagg 10-13-05 11:20 PM

It shall be mine ... oh yes it shall be mine.

Cameron 10-14-05 01:14 AM

i'd buy it in an instant for that price, but own way to many titles for it to be a good deal for me

Actually contains about 216 separate titles...several box sets included (Tarzan collection, Thin Man collection, etc.). Great deal even at the $1450+ price...this would be outstanding deal if the 20% discount will apply during the anticipated sale, but I'm afraid they will raise the price before then. Can't decide whether to pull the trigger or not (the discount would amount to several hundred dollars' savings). At any rate, this would be a great way for someone to start a classic film collection...nearly all of these are noteworthy movies and a large percentage are 'essentials' for film buffs. Even though we already own many of these titles, might go ahead (can always sell the duplicates and recover my investment on those)...and will get some fine prices on new Ben Hur, etc.

Yakuza Bengoshi 10-14-05 10:31 PM

This set is scheduled to be released 11/22/05 which means that it probably won't ship until the week before at the earliest. Therefore, one could order now to lock in the prsent price ($1450+), and if the 20% sale should start before the price changes or the item ships, one can just cancel and reorder at the $1161 price.

Yep, that's what I did yesterday...but thanks for the suggestion, Yak (usually I don't have the presence of mind to act rationally). The only problem I can see with this set is being able to return any defective discs (I DON'T plan to watch 216 discs within 30 days!). DDD needs to adjust its return policy for purchases of large quantities of discs.
