(DEAD) Charles Dickens Collection Pre-Order Deal at Overstock

Amazon is selling The Charles Dickens Collection for $10.49, even though most places have it for sale at $40 to $50. This is a 6-title collection of movies made by the BBC that has a release date of September 6th. I'm guessing that each individual title will sell for the $10.49 price and that Amazon listed the entire set by mistake - though I don't know this for a fact. Here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...PVZMS/dvdtalk/

Also, the same thing appears to be going on at Overstock, except they have almost no information there on what you're buying:

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2....cid=25608&fp=F

I went ahead and ordered one from each site, figuring that if either one honors their price, I'll be happy.

Here's a little more info on the set:

http://www.facets.org/asticat?functi.../features.html

EDIT: As of 5 pm Pacific time on June 9th, the Amazon price is no longer valid - but the Overstock price is still good.

Based on previous experiences with misprices at both sites, chances are Amazon will bail out and Overstock will deliver.

Don't forget - Overstock charges your credit card immediately when you place the order.

However, overstock will charge your credit card immediately. So, if it turns out to be some other set you will have a hard(er) time cancelling. At least it isn't like DVDsoon where you would be screwed on the currency conversion fees - assuming you are in the USA.

Well, I've pre-ordered through Amazon.com. I'll just have to hope they honour it. Overstock.com won't ship this set to Canada, but I've attempted to get one of my Ameri-friends to order it for me.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Thanks, ordered from Overstock. If it is a price mistake, there's no chance in hell Amazon will honor it. Overstock will definitely come through if it isn't a mistake, and still probably will if it is.

If you have a Citibank credit card, their Dividend Merchant Network is giving an instant 10% off through Father's Day. You have to link through their site, and it shows as a coupon. My total was $10.74 with shipping.

I added Cinderella (10/05 release) to my order at Amazon to qualify for free shipping. I figured if this is a price mistake, I can cancel the entire order and lose nothing. If it comes through, I can wait the extra month for the Dicken's set.

Excellent deal- thanks for posting it! If they both honor the price, someone is getting this set for Christmas!

This has not been my experience at Overstock. I ordered a pre-order DVD that was mispriced and when I didn't receive the DVD ("Dead End") a month after it was released, I gave them a call. The customer rep said it would ship out by the end of the day. When I checked my order status the next day, the order had been cancelled. (The DVD was in stock, but at a higher price.) It sounded like the customer rep support was outsourced, so I didn't bother calling back and fighting it.

That's for the link, though. If I feel lucky, I'll give them another try.

it means they're aware of the pricing error, and have temporarily corrected it by addind a "sourcing fee"......whatever that is. if you add it to your cart, you'll se the set now costs 41.99

Still showing available at Overstock, which has honored all 3 previous misprices I ordered. Notice that on the item page it says:

"In order to assure you Overstock.com's low price on this pre-order, we will charge your credit card when the order is placed today. The item will be shipped on or after 09/06/2005."

That policy of charging immediately to "assure you Overstock.com's low price" tends to lock them in to the price, I would imagine.

I hope its a better deal than the Tomorrow People. Atleast C. Dickens stories were pretty cool but who knows how these are?

Thank you kindly Al_Tahoe. I don't think I'm a Dickens fan but I'll give it a shot and hope I like a couple of them.

Dickens Rocks!

But I have no idea if these particular movies kick as much ass as his books do.

It's ~ 6:30 am on Friday, June 10th and this is the #1 best-selling title at Overstock

To all those who thanked me... you're welcome!

Edit: No longer on Overstock's 'top seller' list.

Looks like it's still alive @ Overstock. My attempt yesterday might have been a pre-cursor to things to come, but for now it's orderable.

Thanks for the extra info, though some of it is weird. For starters, the description leaves off Great Expectations, though it's shown on the picture of the box. Secondly, these running times (up to 390 minutes) seem incompatable with single-disc releases. We'll see, I guess.

In any case, 1920 minutes of entertainment for $10.38 is a pretty good deal in anyone's book.
Thanks OP

I noticed the long running times too. I'm guessing the discs are 'flippers'. Since these were originally made for British TV, they should have logical stopping points at the ends of episodes and flipping wouldn't be too much of a hassle. At least not like a feature film where the movie just stops in the middle.

Speaking of weird descriptions... has anyone else noticed that the Overstock description lists 'Amaray Case' as one of the titles? Too bad I already own about 1000 copies of that one... talk about double dips!
