dangit, now im going to have to go and buy it. Grrrr, expensive double dip.
Cameron, thanks for the link to your thread, i didnt know the 80's TZ was out on dvd, any deals on that would be appreciated. I loved TZ, and really enjoyed the 80's version too, along with amazing stories. Will that see the light of day?

I bought all the 43 discs they had on Amazon for $4.99 each (with free ship and -A9 discount) when they were closing them out (because of this set, I'm sure) thinking it would be cheaper than paying the full price for these sets.
Now, of course, at these prices, I probably should have just waited to get these.
What am I missing out on (besides chronological episodes, enclosed booklet, commentaries, and the few episodes not on the 43 discs like Owl Creek and Howling Man?) by not getting the "definitive" box set after spending about $210 getting the whole 43 disc set (and a separate DVD cabinet to store them all?)
signed,

Lecithin - Missing out on the Rod Serling audio lectures that play over select episodes, for one. As close to Serling audio commentary for episodes as you'll ever get (though not screen specific). He swears a bit even; it's a pleasure to listen to. Also there are isolated scores and quite a few of the TZ radio series broadcasts. And a gameshow that Rod Serling hosted in the '60s. That was a trip as well. Then there is also a very short Rod Serling blooper (messing up one of his intros). Finally, the next's week's show teasers for the episodes as well as original bumpers, promos for other shows and short clips about the sponsors.

In fact, a year ago last November, I was just HOURS away from ordering the 5 box sets during that DDD 20% off sale. Just to be sure, I rented several of them to check them out. I was so dissapointed, I just knew they would have to re-release them eventually. Also, the new ones don't have that annoying menu system with the stupid EYEBALL!
I'm so glad I have this set now, I usually watch an episode every night before I go to bed!

And another great thing about the Definitive Editions is that you can just skip the fourth season altogether if you want to.

*I've personally never understood the whole "4th season" issue. In spite of the studio forced issues (hour long run time for instance) I thought it produced some great episodes, "Miniature" with Robert Duvall, and "On Thursday We Leave For Home" with James Whitmore were pretty terrific.

The 4th season was definately the weakest of the entire run. But if you love the zone, its still a pickup. Like SRGilbert says, there are some good eps in there. Id actually look forward to hearing some commentaries and extra info on this season, and the decisions to go to 1 hour episodes.

I wish I could have cinched this up at that price, but it was worth every penny I paid for it at amazon.com
And in regards to the fourth season: On Thursday We Leave for Home is one of the best episodes in the series and there are quite a few above average episodes from that season: Death Ship and Miniature both come to mind. And as flawed as it is, Valley of the Shadow has always been of particular interest to me.

FYI, Sam's site has it for $72.46 if your store doesn't carry it. You can also do an advanced search on the site to see if any clubs in the area have it in stock.
