Unless you pay with cash, they probably track you with or without the card (I know grocery store does, since even before they put those cards in I'd get coupons that related to things I purchased on past visits when I went there). I still wouldn't pay for the card though (and haven't, I've gotten it free both years).

I would never pay for the card, but using it for free on purchases I would make anyway (primarily video games using the GGC, as those are the only best buys left at Best Buy, and even those may be on the way out) makes sense to me.

I don't mind the store knowing what I buy, because they do anyway, and in the aggregate, that keeps products I like coming, and in the personal, sometimes gets me coupons/deals. And I can always go cash if I don't want to be tracked.
It's when they sell that info and profit off of it, that annoys me. Also, it's a bad precedent in a way--what if, say, a car insurance company finds your Food Lion database, finds that you buy a 12 pack of beer a week, and raises your rates because you're more likely to be a drunk driver than a nondrinker?
And having to pay for it is insult to injury. If I get it free, I'll use it, but I'm not paying for it.

this is what i got in an email when i complained....

Thank you for contacting Best Buy about your renewal. I'm Cindy with Customer
Care.

I do apologize that you did not get a free renewal but this promotion was sent
out to random customers. I do show that you have renewed on 10/30/04 and if you
choose to have the amount you paid for the renewal refunded, please speak with
your local Best Buy.

We look forward to your next visit to one of our stores or to www.BestBuy.com.
Please don't hesitate to contact us with additional questions or concerns.

Best wishes from Best Buy,
Cindy and the Customer Care Team

"random customers" meaning "everyone that used a reward zone card last year and didn't bother to renew"

"Random Customers" could be just that, random customers. I racked up 65 to 70 dollar in reward zone bucks last year and still have not received a free renwal. My "membership" expired aug 31. I have not been in BB since before the end of august and do not plan on being back in unless there is some huge sales this Christmas season. I could careless if they send me a free "membership" at this point. It is very rare that BB has the Best Buy on anything anymore.

Same thing here. Give it a couple of weeks and then log in again. My account has now been "reviewed" to their satisfaction, I guess.

danganet 11-06-04 07:54 PM

Follow up...

I went to the store yesterday and had them check it, and by stars it was renewed. So I picked up a couple $12.99 Special Editions...sweet.

So now to see if they will apply my recent previous purchases.

greg9x 11-08-04 12:29 AM

Yeah, my account lapsed for about 2 months then they gave me the free renewal.. suspected they would, that's why I held out... plus thier deals aren't the hottest anymore.

tonyc3742 11-08-04 09:25 AM

Did you have to start over with points, or did they carryover any points you had when your account lapsed?
And you're right, BB isn't the best buy anymore in many cases.

Heck, they ought to put an RFID in the card so that when you walk in the store they will know you are there, all the smurfs can address you by name and bring you products they know you will want. And, since you are such a nice guy, you won't mind if they share your buying history with the department of homeland security, after all you have nothing to hide and besides its the law - our anti-terrorist police forces know that people buying movies in Farsi like the "Criterion Collection: Taste of Cherry" or "Secret Ballot" are probably terrorist sympathizers and should be rooted out and locked up before they hurt anyone.

You will also be glad that BBY shares your information with their business partners because if you buy that disc on the lamaze method, surely you would want to buy some diapers, and don't forget a life insurance policy for yourself and the new addition to the family!

Not that we're speculating wildly or anything... -ohbfrank-

I didnt get anything about a renewl and its been 3 months since it expired. I will have to check my account online and see if it says anything.

Brad Anderson, chief executive officer of Best Buy

Best Buy's angels are customers who boost profits at the consumer-electronics giant by snapping up high-definition televisions, portable electronics, and newly released DVDs without waiting for markdowns or rebates.

The devils are its worst customers. They buy products, apply for rebates, return the purchases, then buy them back at returned-merchandise discounts. They load up on "loss leaders," severely discounted merchandise designed to boost store traffic, then flip the goods at a profit on eBay. They slap down rock-bottom price quotes from Web sites and demand that Best Buy make good on its lowest-price pledge. "They can wreak enormous economic havoc," says Mr. Anderson.

from the article, it looks like Best Buy doesn't want customers who aren't willing to pay $9.99 for a Rewards Membership when they more than made back that $9.99 with Rewards Certificates that they received.......that is, unless you buy big ticket items like plasma TVs.

mr.bill 11-09-04 05:05 AM

normally BB asks me if I want to renew for $9.99, but the other day they asked me if I wanted to renew for 2 years for 14.99... Wonder if this is a new program for BB.

fujishig 11-09-04 11:01 AM

In two years, it'll be a 5 dollar certificate for every 200 dollars you spend...

BenCJedi 11-09-04 08:59 PM

Dang it! I renewed for the $9.99 on August 31st, but the renewal would not work on the card since it expired on July 31st, so the BB people activated a new card. It took the rewardzone people a month to move my points to the new card. And now I got the free renewal notice on the original card I consolidated with the new one. This is a mess. I think I will try to get the original card activated per the free activation and hope they mess up and put the original points on that card to. I'll use one until I get a $5 and then toss it.

danganet 11-23-04 07:49 PM

Hmmm....

Today I go in to get Seinfeld, used my renewed by them card, and was asked if I wanted to renew my card....

Heh, uhhh...They renewed my card so I would renew? What's up with this?

I declined, obviously...but I wonder if I am getting points, since it looked like it was applied on my reciept.

Has this happen to anyone else that got an automatic renewell as discussed in this thread?

eau 11-24-04 03:52 AM

freebie & bonus

A free holiday CD and bonus points for Reward Zone members on Saturady, 11/26.

I posted the details in this thread.

HumanResearch 12-31-04 02:54 PM

Best Buy sent me a postcard for 15 months at $9.99 to renew. My membership expires today so i guess I'll renew. Too bad i didn't get a freebie.

SlingshotBandit 12-31-04 04:47 PM

Yeah, man. I didn't get the free bonus disc. Bummer!

I went in a few times to BB with my RZ membership about to expire. I had to hear the clerk, each time, ask if i'd like to renew it. (Also, with the option for 2 years at $14.99). I turned it down each time, thinking in the back of my head "They'll ask me to renew for free like they did with other customers." But, when it boiled down to it, I didn't want to take that chance. I'd lose all the reward zone coupons I'd be getting for a couple of big purchases I had made (tv, and a dvd harddrive recorder).

So, I bit the bullet and renewed it for a year before it expired today. Now, looking forward to those RZ coupons....

SlingshotBandit 12-31-04 04:50 PM

One other thing. Since the coupons they mail you have an expiration date, can you use the RZ coupons to buy gift certificates? I'd assume you can, but I don't have one of the coupons to read the fine print on it. I'd like to do this, since I'd more than likely save ther RZ certificates to buy something bigger (like a digital camera) later, and combine them with the BB gift cards I have now.

wajedi 12-31-04 04:58 PM

No, RZ certificates can not be used on gift card purchases.

danganet 12-31-04 08:28 PM

Final follow up on my "renewed membership"....

I called because since November whenever I made a purchase they would ask me if I wanted to renew. So I called, on a Sunday morn of course, since it is the only time I can get through and the lady said and I kid you not that I was both an active and inactive member. So what does that mean? Looks like they were dangling that free renewel in front of me and all the while I wasn't collecting any points. So I thanked her and tossed the card. Oh well.

She didn't even want to entice me by offering any deal to renew like bonus points or getting 2 $5 certificates in exchange like some others members have. I don't feel so loved by Best Bye now.
