Wow, no kidding about BN's fast shipping, just received my dvd after ordering around 7pm on tuesday. Again, thanks to Peach for the heads-up on this coupon; good luck to all the pre-orders out there :)

They have 40,000 employees, according to the Wall Street Journal. That includes employees at B. Dalton and GameStop stores. It's not that hard to imagine, considering BB has 100,000 employees and CC also has 40,000 employees.

I'll bet Criterion will be happy to see the jump in sales of Battle of Algiers as a result of this coupon! :)

You should make a sticky at the of the top of this forum saying....

"Noobs, please dont call CSRs about a Deal, thus ruining it for the rest of us" :)

B&N also owns a text book (school) company and manages/runs bookstores in many college campus locations.

Thanks, Miss Peach! I got in on this one, and saved $10 on my order. Thanks so much!

GameStop is owned by B&N?

Anyone know if I can use B&N credit to but things in GameStop?

Linn1 10-28-04 01:17 PM

Right.

I did say a MILLION, as I was joking and changed it just for the very reason that it would be taken as truth and someone would think it was funny. Thanks. :) I've been working for B& N for 6 years and I'm the assistant manager at one of the bookstores. The 40,000 number doesn't include MovieStop(a new chain) or half a dozen other stores they own part of. And then of course there's things like the Barnes and Noble in Ireland. Please be aware, even if you're not owned by Barnes and Noble, but they have stock in a company, they consider you employees and you get the discount. There's a sheet with about 16 or 17 companies where we get employee discounts. An example of how far this goes would be Game Stop, which B&N was only part owner in for years. They also got a discount at B&N for years before they were bought outright, even though B&N employees got none there until just a couple of years ago. Considering I got at least three phone calls over the last few days dealing with this, I know what I'm talking about.

Mine should get here tomorrow!

It shipped from TN yesterday at around 10:00 PM.

It's in about 100 - 150 miles away in West Columbia, SC!

Can't wait for BATTLE OF ALGIERS!

substeve 10-28-04 05:59 PM

Wow. The items I ordered around midnight of the 26th arrived today! That's _beyond_ fast shipping folks. I just may place orders with B&N in the future regardless of whether or not I have a coupon if they are going to ship this fast. I've never ordered something and had it come so fast, without selecting overnight delivery. Very impressed. My only regret is that I should have thought to create some more email addresses to place even more orders than I actually did. If they honor my two pre-orders as well kudos to them for honoring them. Price may suck overall but you can't fault them for their shipping!

I can't tell you how great it is to finally cash in on one of these deals. I always come in here just when a deal went dead... can't believe I actually got in on one! :-)

Nabalab 10-28-04 07:31 PM

Thanks Peach! My Scream set came today - woo hoo!

As for the Noobs - not all are evil, and everyone has to start out somewhere!!!!

substeve . . . you know, all of us want the best price we can get, but honestly sometimes it is just a joy to have a painless online shopping experience — one you won't be biting your nails over.

When Amazon lost my business some years ago, they lost The Motherload if I don't mind saying so. And I switched to Barnes & Noble. You have to be somewhat strategic in dealing with them — their prices can change daily when they have a deal such as this one — but you can virtually always find 5-OFF-50 B&N codes out there; and with some planning, you'll not do that much worse than Amazon . . . and if it's bargain hardcovers you're looking for . . . Amazon? Fuggedaboutit. My "estate" (I hate that word, it makes me sound like I'm rich, I guarantee you I'm not) — anyway, my estate is in trust for the building of a new library in my small town. This is the business Amazon lost when they manipulated my business once too often.

Too often we don't acknowledge that there is value in plain old Peace of Mind! B&N ships so damn fast — but let me also add, the product arrives undamaged. I can't begin to tell you how many mangled books I used to get from Amazon. Then you do the old "send me a return label" thing. You wait. They finally get you the "new" hardcover you were supposed to have received in the first place. And for this you saved a couple of bucks.

Your post is an excellent example of that old fashioned consumer attitude: Customer Loyalty. I'm also a loyal B&N customer. Unfortunately, now that I've created a second account it will probably mean I'll buy twice as many books from them! Aaarrrghhhh. But it's nice to hear how pleased everyone is with their shipping. My book arrived, as per usual, in flawless condition.

No, they'll get a great deal of mileage out of this code, make no mistake about it. Whatever else you think about Barnes and Noble, they're a class act.

And if you're an avid reader, like I am, you should look into becoming a member: The standard online discount is 5% but they frequently offer additional 10% off codes. You're safe to calculate that if you spend at least $175-per-year you'll recoup your membership.

I am just thrilled that so many of you are pleased. This really makes me happy!

Oh, Miss Peach, "pleased" doesn't even come close. I got Battle of Algiers, a 3-disc Criterion, for 1/2 price. And that's without Discover or B&N membership. I think "giddy" captures it pretty well.

It's not up there with deals like the Suncoast misprice, but $10 off with no minimum is reminiscent of the good ol' days of Reel and 800.com. Thought those days were gone forever.

Thanks again!

My bad ... I keep opening this thread thinking it has news or some new information. Between the whining and the morality lessons and such - jeesh, how are we ever going to discover new bargains out there. Let it go people (on both sides), this deal is dead (for whatever reasons) and we need to move on (or at the very least stop discussing it).

The topic says the deal is "DEAD", so what kind of news or new information were you expecting?

tofferman 10-29-04 09:16 AM

Well I was able to get my original order restored with B&N (Gone With the Wind for $21.98). I won't go into the details as to how I got them to restore it with the $10 discount. Thank you Miss Peach for sharing this great deal with fellow dvdtalkers. Even though I have been posting on this site for a relatively short time period (a "Noob" by your definition), I have been a daily reader of the threads on this site for about 2-3 years and have gotten in on many deals (the Muppets Time-Life deal for example). I will admit that I had no idea that this was an employee only coupon for B&N; hence when I saw the price discounted further for Gone With The Wind, I wanted in on that price...greedy I guess. Apparently B&N will not adjust a price once an order is placed, which is why they told me to cancel my original order and to resubmit it (I emailed them on this). I didn't get their email response till after coming home from work, which by then the coupon deal was dead. That is why I called their customer service not knowing that this was an employee only coupon. At least I got the original deal restored (and props to B&N for doing it). With over 1000 dvds in my collection now, every dollar saved helps me to acquire more titles of interest. It's like an illness that can't be cured. I suspect I'm not alone here with this affliction. -wink-

If we've learned anything at all the past few years, it's that that strategy absolutely never works. The code hits the internet forums and it's all over then. They should have issued their employees individual coupon codes. Or better yet just give them a small raise. :)

Miss Peach, I have gratitude.. to you for posting about this deal. Thank you. But I don't appreciate your comments above.
In reality, you're the one who's a little hypocritical here. You actively endorse the advice that people should not call up B&N to ask about this deal because that could kill it. But then you preach to me about the generosity of B&N and my ingratitude. Isn't that a little like a thief praising the generosity of his unsuspecting victims? So get off your high horse.

Let's review, shall we?

1. You posted about a great coupon deal. It was similarly posted around the net. Lots of people took advantage, including me. Before anybody knew it wasn't for general use, by the way.

2. The coupon got shut down. It was reported here the reason is because the coupon was intended for employees only.

3. In the ensuing discussion, I merely pointed out that any e-tailer in this day and age who thinks they can issue a general use coupon but still expect it to stay confined to its intended audience is STUPID. Just an observation. Nothing more. And no, while B&N was being generous to their employees, they never intended to be generous to us, now did they? Or you wouldn't be afraid for people to inquire about it. It's nice that they honor non-employee orders that went through, but that's just good customer relations - something smart to balance their prior stupidity.

Hey, I still appreciate getting in on a deal. But that doesn't prevent me from being able to comment about the general situation that led to this.

You seem a little defensive, as if my post was knocking your original post or something, when that wasn't the case. Bottom line, I think you should shut up and get off my back.

Actually, very good point. Being that I pre-ordered the new U2 cd, I should have thought of that.

I also check this thread not necessarily looking for new info - I like to to see what people ordered, to give me ideas for the future.

Actually, I just re-enrolled in Columbia House specifically to get My Fair Lady. I wouldn't say it can apply to a lot of things. Columbia House doesn't stock too many DVDs that can't be had for less than $20 and not too many good ones at that.

Not too many good ones? - out of 5700 or so in the catalog, I would imagine there are a few that most people would consider good ones, unless thay have huge collections already. I own about 600, and a list of about 100 more "must have" CH DVDs, mostly 2-disc SEs or recent releases, as well as loads of older cheaper discs I would use to fulfill if on sale.

And less than $20? What kind of criteria is that? My last 3 memberships, my average prices were $6.28, $5.20 and $5.20.
