Well I was able to get my original order restored with B&N (Gone With the Wind for $21.98). I won't go into the details as to how I got them to restore it with the $10 discount. Thank you Miss Peach for sharing this great deal with fellow dvdtalkers. Even though I have been posting on this site for a relatively short time period (a "Noob" by your definition), I have been a daily reader of the threads on this site for about 2-3 years and have gotten in on many deals (the Muppets Time-Life deal for example). I will admit that I had no idea that this was an employee only coupon for B&N; hence when I saw the price discounted further for Gone With The Wind, I wanted in on that price...greedy I guess. Apparently B&N will not adjust a price once an order is placed, which is why they told me to cancel my original order and to resubmit it (I emailed them on this). I didn't get their email response till after coming home from work, which by then the coupon deal was dead. That is why I called their customer service not knowing that this was an employee only coupon. At least I got the original deal restored (and props to B&N for doing it). With over 1000 dvds in my collection now, every dollar saved helps me to acquire more titles of interest. It's like an illness that can't be cured. I suspect I'm not alone here with this affliction. -wink-

Well, I chose free shipping on Tuesday and received my dvd's on thursday, 2 days later. Kinda dumb to use any other sort of shipping.

On whether orders for preordered items have been cancelled or not.

Originally posted by hondo21... But how stupid is B&N for issuing a general use coupon intended for a limited group? If we've learned anything at all the past few years, it's that that strategy absolutely never works. The code hits the internet forums and it's all over then. They should have issued their employees individual coupon codes. Or better yet just give them a small raise. :)

The word is "generous" — no, that's in relation to Barnes & Noble, not you; the word you apparently need to learn is gratitude.

PEACH

Miss Peach, I have gratitude.. to you for posting about this deal. Thank you. But I don't appreciate your comments above.
In reality, you're the one who's a little hypocritical here. You actively endorse the advice that people should not call up B&N to ask about this deal because that could kill it. But then you preach to me about the generosity of B&N and my ingratitude. Isn't that a little like a thief praising the generosity of his unsuspecting victims? So get off your high horse.

Let's review, shall we?

1. You posted about a great coupon deal. It was similarly posted around the net. Lots of people took advantage, including me. Before anybody knew it wasn't for general use, by the way.

2. The coupon got shut down. It was reported here the reason is because the coupon was intended for employees only.

3. In the ensuing discussion, I merely pointed out that any e-tailer in this day and age who thinks they can issue a general use coupon but still expect it to stay confined to its intended audience is STUPID. Just an observation. Nothing more. And no, while B&N was being generous to their employees, they never intended to be generous to us, now did they? Or you wouldn't be afraid for people to inquire about it. It's nice that they honor non-employee orders that went through, but that's just good customer relations - something smart to balance their prior stupidity.

Hey, I still appreciate getting in on a deal. But that doesn't prevent me from being able to comment about the general situation that led to this.

You seem a little defensive, as if my post was knocking your original post or something, when that wasn't the case. Bottom line, I think you should shut up and get off my back.

Actually, very good point. Being that I pre-ordered the new U2 cd, I should have thought of that.

I also check this thread not necessarily looking for new info - I like to to see what people ordered, to give me ideas for the future.

I can, and was.
But I don't need somebody going out of their way to issue misguided lectures on gratitude and hypocrisy.

Great minds think alike, I also order the U2 album and while I do hope I get it I'm not holding my breath.

Actually, I just re-enrolled in Columbia House specifically to get My Fair Lady. I wouldn't say it can apply to a lot of things. Columbia House doesn't stock too many DVDs that can't be had for less than $20 and not too many good ones at that.

Not too many good ones? - out of 5700 or so in the catalog, I would imagine there are a few that most people would consider good ones, unless thay have huge collections already. I own about 600, and a list of about 100 more "must have" CH DVDs, mostly 2-disc SEs or recent releases, as well as loads of older cheaper discs I would use to fulfill if on sale.

And less than $20? What kind of criteria is that? My last 3 memberships, my average prices were $6.28, $5.20 and $5.20.

please don't turn this thread into a columbia house debate.

I don't intend to, but I can't stand seeing people post vague questionable info that might discourage others from looking into CH.

I agree with the points you made. I'm not sure I've seen anyone on this forum be so serious as the OP.

I own around 660 DVDs and have a bunch on my wishlist too. Though I can probably only get around 5 or 6 of those at CH. To me, if the DVD can be bought somewhere else for less than $20 its not worth it to join. Now don't get me wrong I'm on my 4th account now. I've done pretty well with CH but their selection is limited. There are so many titles I'd like to pick up if only CH would carry them (eg. City of God) I'm not into the big mainstream titles as much as maybe some DVD fans are so CH, to me, is limited. Though I still enjoy picking up their Columbia Classics line because those DVDs are so damn expensive.
