That movie pissed me off. Started out as a slow but interesting character-driven drama/mystery that out of nowhere turned into a James Bond film in the last act. Very uneven in tone.

Except that the movie takes place in Denmark and Greenland and had nothing to do with Iceland...

Hey they named the countries that way to purposely get people mixed up. Can't complain when we do.

Iceland and Norway are indeed whale killers. But the real situation is far different from that as portrayed by Greenpeace. Here's some hard data on the topic:

Norway and Iceland almost exclusively hunt minke whales. The minke is not endangered, in fact the species could almost be called flourishing. In 2002, Norway counted 107,000 minke whales in its waters, Iceland counted 43,000. There are hundreds of thousands more in the pacific. Population growth is in the 2-3% range.

In 2002, Iceland killed 38 minke whales. Norway killed 711 and Japan killed less than 540. That's less than one-half of one percent of the total minke population.

While 7 of the 13 species of great whales are still endangered, none of the whaling countries hunt those species and over all, the threats of pollution and collisions with shipping vessels are a much greater danger to the continued survival of all species of great whale than hunting by humans is.

The above numbers have been endorsed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) the organization of 47 countries which banned commercial whaling and still continues the ban today.
