Cartoonist Joe Matt Has Passed Away
Don't know how many people here are fans of the 90s alternative comic books/Drawn and Quarterly stuff, but Matt Wagner sadly posted today that Joe Matt, who (sporadically) did the hilarious comic PEEP SHOW has passed away.
I used to run into Joe quite a bit before he moved from Toronto to LA, usually at one of the comic book shops like The Beguiling or Silver Snail. He was always very friendly, up for a chat, happy to show me his sketch book.
It's been well over a decade since the last issue of PEEPSHOW (which was collected into the book SPENT). About two years ago, he used his instagram to share penciled pages of the next issue of the comic, which he said just needed to be inked. Those seem to have been taken down (guess he realized he was giving away the store before the book could be published), but I really hope it's in a form that can be put out.
Joe was one of the first autobiographical cartoonist I read, and still for my money the funniest. I've always considered issue 13 of PEEPSHOW (a thirty-something page conversation between him, Chester Brown, and Seth) to be one of my top 10 comic issues of all time. It took me a long time to read , because I literally had to pause after every couple of panels to compose myself I was laughing so hard.
Thanks for the terrific work, Joe! You brought happiness to my life.

Re: Cartoonist Joe Matt Has Passed Away
Very sad to hear, I was a fan of Peepshow as well. Speaking of The Beguiling and Silver Snail, I really miss their old locations in Mirvish Village and Queen St. West respectively. When I first visited those stores as a teenager back in the 80s, they blew my mind.

The Beguiling was amazing. When I first got into comics in the mid 90s it was crammed full of treasures for me to discover. It was also cool how it was a center for every visiting cartoonist to Toronto. A lot of times I would buy a book from there, and be surprised when I opened it up and discovered it was signed/sketched in by the author
